View Full Version : Misc thoughts on Elements 6

I used version 5 for a while before upgrading to 6. After a few days of playing around, here are my thoughts (in no particular order). If anyone has a solution or any related thoughts, post away!
- Help: Going to the help menu and clicking "Photoshop Elements Help... F1" does absolutely nothing! Sometimes the mouse cursor turns to the hourglass for a brief second but nothing ever happens. To get help on anything I have to click "Glossary of Terms", which brings up a page on the Adobe website and I search for help there. Anyone else have this problem? I also miss the text box on the top menu bar that allowed you to search Help directly.
- Zoom: The mouse's scroll wheel no longer controls the zoom, it now scrolls the image vertically. This is obviously subjective and how you feel will be a matter of personal preference. I personally liked using the wheel to zoom in/out on an image. They should make the behavior of the wheel configurable. Edit: Nevermind! I found the option for this under General preferences! :o
- Color: Really like the darker color scheme.
- Quick Selection Tool: Love it! Love the Refine Edge option on all the selection tools as well.
- Black & White: Love the improved B&W conversion. It was good before, but now it's even better. In fact, in most cases I tend to prefer it's results to that of third party plug-ins that I've seen.

Are you sure? My wheel action depends on the position of the cursor. If the cursor is on the scroll bar, it will scroll vertically or horizontally. If it is in the middle of the image, it will zoom in and out. That would be a great loss if it only scrolls.

I looked in the Preferences yesterday to see if this was configurable and I didn't see anything. However, after reading your post I took one more look and, sure enough, there is an option under General preferences for "Zoom with Scroll Wheel". Doh! If my Help wasn't broken maybe I would have found it sooner!

Thanks Wendy.
In the last couple of weeks I think I downloaded and tried every piece of photo software there is. I'm glad I finally settled with Elements. I also liked Capture NX, but felt I could do a lot more with Elements.

My Photoshop Elements 6 and Premiere Elements 4 arrived yesterday as well (10-3-07).
Can't tell you how excited i am with the new features and new look.
One item that puzzles me is that a User Guide (book) for Photoshop Elements 6 was not included. The User Guide for Premiere Elements was there but not Photoshop.
As far as i can tell, in Joe M's photo the User Guide is not there either.
These kinds of things have happened to me before. The entire rest of the world may know the two magic words to wisper over the Photoshop Elements 5 User Guide to make it convert to 6. If so, if you would share these with me i would be ever so grateful.

Mine had a Quick Start Guide, but no User Guide. However, you can get it here (http://www.adobe.com/support/documentation/en/photoshop_elements/).

You're right, I guess it's a cost saving measure. Adobe makes great User Guides unlike most companies. I hate I won't be able to read the Elements 6 Guide in the bathroom.:D

You can get the PSE6 User Guide here:

Tough to read in the bathroom though unless you have a waterproof laptop ;)

NOBODY provides user guides in print anymore, it seems to me. Used to be when you bought a piece of software the box contained at least one good sized manual. Now it's a PDF on the CD/DVD. On the one hand it has the same info and you end up saving some trees (how many people really do RTFM?) And, it helps the aftermarket for software manuals, which isn't all bad.
Still, it's like opening the cereal box and the prize is missing...

For some reason, maybe because I'm using dial-up, I wasn't able to download the PDF for the manual the other night; it has a lot of pages. Reading the manual online wasn't a problem. Pages loaded up fairly fast.

Thank you so much Tony W., et. al.
Now i have my User Guide bookmarked online.
Hey! I can go with the flow - just because i'm old doesn't mean i can't change!!
