My hubby just asked me what I'd like to have for Christmas this year, so of course, I'd like a new camera. The Sony I have is nice but the response time is very slow when I push the shutter button. I lose some very good shots because of this. Other than that issue and lot's of mega-pixels does any one have any other suggestions?

Sherrie,
I always suggest that once you have got the list down to a few then go into a camera shop and try them out. Until you hold a camera in your hand it is very difficult to know what it is really like. :)

imho SONY makes the best darn TV's.....and they should stay in that business. I've never heard anything good about a SONY digital camera...but of course that does not suggest that someone who uses one would feel the same. Try before you buy...

Well, this little guy does an ok job, it's just all the shots I miss that is frustrating. We do have a very good camera shop about 10 miles away. I may make a stop to see what they have to offer. Thanks for the suggestions

Sherry, I was pretty happy in general with my little Canon S100 until I got the new Kodak Z740! WHAT A DIFFERENCE! There is no comparison. The colour is vibrant, the focus is dead on and quick. There is some lag storing to memory, but there was with the canon too. The shutter speed is so much faster. No doubt, ANY camera that you pick up will be better than what you have since technology has moved along at such a great speed. You have lots of time to do research.

Hi,
Someone once told me that when consdering buying a camera, by one from a camera maker, Nikon, Olympus for example, rather than from a company that's primarily an electronics company, like Sony for exanple. It turned out to be true for me, I like my Nikon much better than I did my Sony. His advice was to stick to the lens makers, companies with long histories for excellence with photographic products-he said that just about anyone can make electronics-not everyone can make cameras.

For Carol & Jodi,
You gals like to cut to the quick. I have to take some exception to your general comments as I own the Sony F828. Bear in mind that it is now 2yr. old technology and when I replace it I will probably go Canon or Nikon, BUT, it's 8 meg., it has a Carl Zeiss lens, 7X optical zoom beginning @28mm, shoots RAW, uses CF and MS, has manual focus, & 4 color HAD CCD sensor. My eyes and shakey hands are more problem than the camera. There have been an awful lot of very nice comments on the photos I have posted. I have heard comments similar to yours from fellow workers, etc. and then when they have seen my shots I hear, "OH".[/u]

Rich, again, I knew somebody would say differently and I suspected so much which is why i added that to my original comment...but listen, you would shoot great photos with a shoe box camera ! Again, it isn't always the camera ;)

Jodi,
I think we all have the same end result in mind and you try to buy the best you can afford at the time. The way technology keeps exploding it's hard to imagine what's down the road. No matter what you buy, as long as you do the research ahead of time, and listen to the pros not the salesman at the counter, you will probably come out ahead. Also as you say it's not always just the camera. I started out snapping photos of whatever and over the years of listening to photographers I respected and trying to improve techniques I have learned to THINK about what I am seeing. But, a lot of the time I get in a hurry and rush the shot (especially with the grandkids) and then the camera saves the day. Thank goodness with digital we can save them or trash them.

Oh, Rich,
Hope you aren't taking any offense-just passing on a piece of advice that I received. :)
Cameras are personal-we'll always find differing opinions

Carol,
No offense taken. If we all wern't opinionated it would be a dull world. When I bought my Sony 2yrs ago it was getting rave reviews, and Carl Zeiss lenses have a 100 yrs. of excellence. Today, I would buy Canon or Nikon.
