Please post your comments are question is this thread. :)

To everyone...
I have been adding a chocolate filter to my black and white layer. It is a Nik filter called Skylight. This creates a lovely color. You can also increase your sat and contrast on you colored layer for a different look.

This is kinda a knock off of Nicole Van's black and white action. Of course the action does lots of other really cool stuff. But you can learn to do that on your own. You just have to get in there and play. :D

It also seems to have a slight sharpening effect.

Thanks for being first Allison. :)
It also seems to give a slight sharpening effect. You did great. Try another on an image that has more color. It works great on skin tone.

That looks really neat, Kimi! I hope to have time to come back later and play...

Okay, I did one with skin. It is a very nice effect. It seems to increase the contrast some as well.

I like yours!

Thanks Allison. Your new one looks really good.

Rusty, yours are great also. I love the desaturated look. I find I am processing with this and then going on to do other things also. :)

Great job everyone!!! I just love doing this effect....It really provides a pop to the image.. In addition, I sometimes add another layer....the photo filter, just to give an image a slightly different coloring....whether it be a warm glow or a coolish glow. Rusty has done this by adding sepia coloring to his granddaughter's photo a few threads ago. It can add a nice touch...

Hi Martha. :)

I am seeing a difference on yours. It seems to me it gets rid of the camera fuzz. Gives a little color boost and sharpens slightly.

Doesn't look like we have many takers the last few weeks. I wonder if everyone is getting tired of the homework?

Personally, I really look forward to Wednesday and a new homework assignment. Some I would use more than others but it's great learning new techniques to use on my photos. Thank you for finding all of these tutorials!

I personally can't wait for the next lesson. It's such a great learning experience. Maybe it just the starting of school and sports has gotten a few of them off kilter! I hope so anyway!!

Nice job zeria. Love the photo. The technique adds some dark elements which really compliment that photo.

Denise: Sorry to be such a dolt, but I'm not getting your instructions! Love the effect, though. So, you have an image converted to B&W (I'm using PSE4 so I can't use your conversion method), then above it you have a black fill layer with blend mode set to soft light and contrast boosted to 10? When I try I still have a B&W image. It doesn't come back to color like in Kimi's technique? :(

Sorry, sleep deprivation......

1. Follow Kimi's directions for the homework assignment....i.e. copy image, convert to BW, change blend mode to soft light....

2. Create a new fill layer.....Go to Layer>New Fill Layer>....make the new fill layer completely black....set the blend mode to soft light and adjust the opacity. This deepens the darker hues even further...I have also done this using different colors, like chocolate, etc (color tone: 39291b, 9c9086, 261300...just a few to get started). to create chocolate undertones.

or

3. Within layers palatte, select Photo Filter....choose sepia, or any other color (you can also customize your color here using the color picker as well!!) to get the desired look you want. Change blend mode to soft light and adjust opacity...because the photo filter has a mask, you also have the option to mask out areas of your image that you do not want to have color enhancement....

Shell, thank you for the compliment. I took the photo fron the deck of a house on Hatteras Island, N.C. where we were staying last month. There were such beautiful sunsets and I was hoping to get a good picture.

Michelle, your photo restoration really showed what a difference the technique can make! Great job!

Rusty, you always have such cute photos of your grandson (Hope this is correct!)

Kimi_Boo, both of yours really changed! And what cute subjects!

Aussie Nan-nice photo and the children are so cute. I love your presentation of the before and after!

Beautiful fall scene, Suzanne.

I really enjoy seeing what everyone creates in these homework assignments!

Denise thanks so much. Now I get it.

Bill... a car? really? It just would be right without your car. :)

Oh Gary, how nice to see you in class this week. And... an Apple for the teacher. :D Yep, you get an A+!

Martha

Question came up about the 2 clicks red and 2 clicks blue when converting my image to BW....with PSEv5, under Enhancements, you select Convert Image to BW.....once the window opens up, there are a bunch of different image settings on the left side of the window....portrait, landscape, newspaper, etc.... I selected the portrait setting...
Then to the right of the settings are the color ehancements....having the midtones selected and the measurement bar slightly less than the middle, I increase the reddness by 2 clicks, and then the blue tones by 2 clicks....I find that this brightens up the BW image giving it much more variation of the grayscale....

For those using PSEv4 or lower, decrease the saturation all the way to zero...then adjust your levels to brighten up the image a bit....

Hope this helps...
