Displacement Maps

Could someone point me to a discussion of displacement maps? I searched this forum and found "Apasskeys" start of the thread on the topic, but could find no reference to a full-blown discussion in the replies. My "help" function does not work, so I am unable to query my own system. I too found the Wendy's tutorial very difficult to follow, but I think this is because I do not understand the "displacement map" concept:)

Hi, I always have better results using the Google toolbar's search this site option. Here's what I got. Hope this helps, they are fun once the concept sinks in.
