View Full Version : Can *only* get a serious error and shutdown

I installed Premier Elements 3.0 on my Intell Core 2 Duo with 100 Gig HD (17 Gig free) & 2 Gig Ram, Windows XP Lenovo T60 in May. I do believe it worked somewhat then, but it caused my machine to slow to a crawl, I stopped using it (and only got my machine functioning properly again after about a dozen daily defrags).

Anyway, that's old news. Today I decided to try using it again and have a whole 'nuther batch of problems.

When I first started it up, it asked me to create a new project or restore the previous project since Premier Elements didn't shut down properly. I chose a new project, and as soon as the program loaded, I got an error that a serious problem had occurred and that the program needed to be shut down.

So I rebooted my computer. Same thing.

I then got the disk and repaired Premier Elements 3.0 via Add/Remove programs. Still I got the error.

I rebooted again. Same thing.

So I uninstalled the program completely, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted, and was certain that would fix the problem.

It didn't.

I can't do *anything* with this program whatsoever. As soon as it loads it crashes.

What to do?

If you have not done so already, check out the Premiere Elements 3 Read Me for System Requirements and other details:

Have you installed Premiere Elements 3.0.2 Update? Important to do so.

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3565

For me, the Repair never works. So, uninstall/reinstall when indicated. Would see if you can install the Update and what happens.

Let us know if any of this helped.

Yep, I installed 3.0.2 per
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=333292&sliceId=2

I'm working on possible fix #4 right now,
4. Re-create the Premiere Elements PluginCache file.

I'm ready to pull my hair out I think!

So I updated my Quicktime player and allowed it into my startup again. That didn't help.

I shut down AVG. That didn't help.

I don't know if this tidbit will help anyone reading this, but the program seems stable until I save a project - as soon as I save a new project it crashes. I tried saving to my external hard drive and it crashed then too.

What could cause it to crash during a save?

I need to backup for a second.

You listed what has not helped, but I am not sure where you are in your workflow.

Have you now gotten to the point where you can create a project in Premiere Elements without the program crashing. Now the crash comes when you go to save this project?

The screen capture that you showed initially gave me the impression that the crashing starts right after you open Premiere Elements and before you actually open a project.

Did you work out the business with the Select Initial Workspace Window? Did that advance the cause?

Depending on your answers, we may have to concentrate on the content of what you are trying to save. You have optimized your computer somewhere along the line?

No. When Elements first starts up it asks me to open an existing project or name a new one ... either way it crashes immediately after saving. I can't do a single thing.

No and no. I held down the shift button till it asked me to open a project or save a new one, the it crashed.

Not sure what you mean by optimizing. I defrag regularly and had edited my paging file. I went in and adjusted (the paging file) per the instructions on the Adobe site, but that didn't help.

I also created a new user with admin privileges and opened Premiere Elements with this new, clean account ... this time the program did not immediately crash upon saving a file name. However as soon as I tried to import or capture video it froze - no error, just your typical program not responding. I let it sit for a half hour or so, hoping it would work itself out, but it didn't.

I had to step away for a while because now I am quite frustrated.

Hope this helps narrow things down!

In the Adobe TechNote on Optimizing Window XP, there is a step for disabling nonessential applications that load during setup. Have you used it.

Essentially,

Start
Run
Msconfig
Startup Tab, disable All
Services Tab, first check "Hide All Microsoft Services", and then disable All.
Close out and restart your computer.
