Hi, after experimenting with jpeg files and shooting, I've finally decided to make the plunge to shooting raw. I have a digital rebel 350d and a 15" powerbook running tiger, and I've been unable to get raw files in PS3. My 350d is running 1.0.1 firmware and I can view my Raw files in Canon software but not PS3. Please assist. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Welcome to the forums :)
Have you installed the latest Camera Raw Plug-in from Adobe? Release 3.1 update included support for the 350D.
You can download the newest version (3.2) for the Mac here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
Let us know how you get on...

Yes I downloaded that and replaced the plug-in file in PSE# with that downloaded file (and removed the earlier version) and then re-started PSE3, to no avail.

I'm not on a Mac but I can't think that Tiger makes any difference. Have you tried the installlation process again?

Took the G4 to the Apple Store (I reside In S.F.) and after presenting my dilemna to their "studio" department of design experts, I'm now happy to say my problem has been resolved. That said, raw is simply the most impressive format I have seen. It was well worth the wait and trouble. I am a disciple !

Hi...
Great news that it's solved... I too am a convert to Raw. Well I'm on the road to conversion. I've started shooting in Raw + JPEG mode.

My only problem now is looking for a 2 gigabyte flash card, they seem to be all out. Shooting raw really enhances the whole photoshop experience. Took some great images of the protest here on Sat.

Can't help you with windows, in Mac the challenge was getting a program to convert the raw files to tiff files (uncompressed) so that they could be delt with in Iphoto or PSE3. With so many window users I'm sure you'll get your problem solved soon.

kaipu,
I have the same kit as you... XP SP2, 350D with 1.0.1 and Camera Raw 3.1...
If you are using the Adobe Photo Downloader, do the Raw files go into Organizer ok?

No Mike No the problem is that.....
They are nowhere to be seen I can't even see them in "Camera Folder"
in "My Computer"........
One more thing I conncet my Camera to the computer and don't use
card reader or something to get the Photos........
I think my computer is not recognizing the format......
Because one day I went to a friends place who has a card reader
and there these Raw files were visible.......
They are just not visible in "My Computer"......

sort of found the solution of the problem but still very far away from
getting it done...
 I tired to install Microsoft's Raw Thumbnailer and viewer and during the
installation it returned the error that crxrawhandler.dll file is missing.....
Looks like that is what preventing the windows to detect the Raw files.....
Can anyone please help me the place where I can download this file from.. :?:
Thanks..... :)

kaipu,
I've not come across this file, also I did a search on the internet but didn't find any reference to it at all. I did a search two of my PCs (both on XP) but the file didn't show up.
Even if you find the file, you may also need to perform a registry edit to tell Windows what to do with the it - unless it comes with an installer.
I'm not sure what to suggest here... we could do with knowing which program it belongs to (i.e. Windows) and then you could repair or reinstall that application.
What other applications do you have installed on your PC?

Ok... if you do that make sure you just do a Windows re-install (rather than a clean install by reformatting) as you will keep your data.

Not sure, but think if you try to download RAW direct from camera you need to process through Canon's raw converter or maybe even use Canon's version of organizer...seems there is something particular about direct downloads..check the manuals.
I have 350D and download to PSE3 using card reader - AOK so far. When you open the RAW file, it loads it into PSE3 raw converter for processing.
Hope it helps.

That is where I've made some progress, dump the CR2 files into a folder and open up with PSE 3. It doesn't make sense that I can't do direct camera into PSE, as it's the same file extension, I would guess that photo downloader isn't using the plugin. Finally, I quickly found out that It's a lot easier editing CR2's in PSE over Canon's software. :D

CR2 files work through your card reader, but not through the camera. I gave it a try and worked awesome. It sounds like a communication problem between the camera and the downloader in PSE. At the very least I got access to the files.
Thanks for the reply

I have the same problem with getting photos taken in RAW on my Canon 350D to download into my pc using the Adobe Photo Downloader. When Adobe Photo Downloader launches it clearly shows CR2 as a supported format. I tried both versions of PSE - 3.0 & 4.0 - with no success. I solved my problem by loading the software that came with the camera - EOS Digital Solution Disk. So, when I take photos in RAW, I download the photos using the Canon downloader into a folder I named RAW. I'm not an expert in computer software, but I don't think this is a windows problem; more so an Abode PSE problem? Does anyone know if there's a patch, plug-in or something to fix this annoying little glish?
Thanks
Pat B.

I found the update RAW plug-in verion 3.10 for my camera Canon Rebel XT 350D on the Adobe site. I followed their instructions, and the darn thing still won't recogonize the raw photos. I have both PSE 3 and 4; the raw file in version 4 is 3.2 and that one won't work either. Any other solutions out there...
Confussed and RAW to the bone...

The 3.2 you no longer can say ok and transfer to a tiff it gives you dng.How do you do thta now open it an dthen save.adobe cannont match canon blue
rawshooter blows it away read the reviews there is no comparision.

November 20th, 2005, 01:22 PM
I have replied to your other thread on this... the Save function in 3.2 is to save changes to the RAW file - not to convert it to another format like tiff or psd. Dng the format that Adobe are promoting as a standard format for Raw files.
To save the Raw file as a tiff, select "Open" to go into Editor.

Hi Pat,
Did you remove the old Raw file before installing the new one?
Mike
I followed the direction adobe laid out; which was to move the old raw file to another location to keep it safe in case the new raw file didn't work. What I did was to create a new folder on my C:\TEMP\PSE_4.0 and C:\TEMP\PSE_3.0 then I move the files to their designated folders. I downloaded the RAW file version 3.1 unzipped it then moved it into C:\..\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 3.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats. Did the same think for Photoshop Elements 4.0. After loading the new plug-in I restarted the pc then activated PSE 3.0 then I tried PSE 4. With no success.
Any ideas??
Thanks Mike...

Hi everybody......
After having tried so many different things I finally
found the solution of the problem......
First of all I want to tell that the format and the fresh
Installation of the windows didn't help.........
I upgraded the firmware of my Canon 350D to 1.0.3
and that didn't helped either.......
Than I decided to buy a Card Reader to transfer the pictures
to the computer and that did the trick......:)
I think the camera had a problem communicating to the computer
when it comes to the transfer of raw files.........
Now I simply put my CF Card into the Card Reader and PSE4
pickups all the pictures out of it...........
I think this is the best option right now.......
Best of luck to all who had the same problem.......

Thanks Kaipu, for all your hard work, but I'm not ready to buy another piece of equipment to transfer my RAW Photos. As a stop gap for now I'm transfering my RAW files using the software that came with the camera. It works very well. After downloading the photos I open PSE and open the RAW photo which launches the RAW Editor. I'm still trying to figure out WHY Canon 350D Rebel and Adobe aren't talking. I'm going to give Canon Tech support a call here in Calgary and find out some answers. I'll let you know what happens.
Thanks again Kaipu,
Pat B.

Pat ...
Most of us do use card readers as they tend to be far less hassel to use. When you use your camera there is always a greater risk of losing your images plus if anything goes wrong it is always a possibility that your camera could be damaged. .. I have always been very reluctant to hook my camera up to the the computer.
The price of card readers is now quite low one ... in fact the last one I picked up here in the UK was around £10.
