This is a beginner lesson.
I spoke with someone during the week that had never heard of color cast.
Your homework this week is to correct the color cast on an image.
Post your before and after image.
I always use my white point. Do let the class know what works best for you.

I'll be first because right now I'm fixing a lot of old photos (30's to 80s). This one worked better when I used the "auto color correction". (also cropped and sharpened a little). This is the Outer Banks, early 80's.

I rec'd copies of many photos with this color cast. This is a photo of a 1940's b/w photo. (I love everything about this vintage photo. It is a picture of my Mom.)
To reduce color cast using levels adjustment layer:
Bring the highlight & shadows sliders to where the majority of the image information begins in the histogram of each color channel. Repeat the same type of adjustment in the Master (RGB) histogram. Adjust the gamma slider for lighter or darker tone.
This method is taught by many instructors. It might have originated with Katrin Eismann, who is the foremost instructor for photo restoration.
There is much more work to be done with this image.

I am one of those people who had never heard of color cast :o
I did this in Rushed time so it is my first attempt and there is not a huge difference but enough for me to be wowed by the effect. I plan on trying this with all my pictures as I think it is the coolest thing ever!

Kimi -
This is a great excercise! I'm recently converted to the method described in the Vol 4, Number 4 newsletter (pages 22-23). Similar to the method Blue Skies mentioned, but a bit different.

And of course I'm extra fond of it because it can be used with cars! :D Thanks for doing these Kimi.

Here's mine, done as Kimi suggested, although my preferred method now is like Bill - using the suggestion from the Vol 4 Number 4 newsletter.

This photo was taken in a room at Myrtle Beach with windows covered in a pink film. The pictures always turn out really awful taken in this room. None of these look a lot better but it was the best example of a photo with a color cast that I had. Maybe this year I can learn how to take a photo under these conditions that will look better.

I did a slideshow in 2003 of all my kids studio/school pictures.
I tried, with PSE no Version number, to get the color cast out.
See the previous effort and the 2007 version.
I used the method from the magazine and then I still had to use another adjustment/levels layer and use the white point eyedropper I also changed the blend mode to overlay.
Still not happy with it. The hair is not really blond and they really were quite suntanned.
