While helping a friend on the finer points of B&W conversions I promised her a tutorial, when I had time. Well today I had time. So for any that are interested, a joy shared is a joy doubled. Now be aware this is painted with a very broad brush and you should use these pages as a starting point and not a finishing point. There are other ways, some cost money, but this should give you enough ways to create winning images.

You are very welcome! While the tutorials should be self explanatory if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Thanks for your encouragement....I tried to use your techniques this morning but think I still need to learn a lot of the basics.

I've ordered "The Photoshop Elements 3 Book for Digital Photographers" and "Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 Classroom in a Book" from Amazon this weekend. Hopefully they will allow me to move beyond the pick, poke and pray technique I'm currently using. :D

In any case, I did manage to do this: http://www.pbase.com/imorozoff/image/38177325

Just don't ask me how. :?

Very well done. Just sharpen the butterfly a tad and you will have a winner.

Got PSE3 for Christmas and this was one of the first things I tried as well. You can take a look at a couple of the things I tried. I thought on the original there was too much detail in the background to pick out the subject clearly.

Just posting links so that everyone doesn't have to view.

Using the technique makes such a a difference to the images.
