In my example here I used a 28" x 21" image at 72 DPI

http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1kzxFB42JnjvQDwU81sCAZisfiIk90_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1kzxFB42JnjvQDwU81sCAZisfiIk90)

[Step: 1]
Open Image

[Step: 2]
Next go to Layer (Main Tool Bar) > Duplicate Layer
Rename this layer as or to: Sketch Base

Now hide the background layer by clicking the "Layer visiblity indicater icon" left of that layer to hide it. With the top layer selected to work with.

[Step: 3]
Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask
Amount: 480 %
Radius: 1.6 Pixels
Threshold: 0

[Step: 4]
Next Duplicate top layer and rename it to or as : "Sketch Lines"

[Step: 5]
Press: Ctrl + I (Filter > Adjustments > Invert)

[Step: 6]
Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur
Radius: 48 Pixels

Now change the blending mode of light to "Color Dodge"

[Step: 7]
Next go to Layer (Main Tool Bar) > New Adjustment Layer > Hue / Saturation
Rename this layer as or to: BW
Group with previous layer: Uncheck
Mode: Normal
Opacity: 100 %

Say, O.K. and use these settings

Edit: Master
Hue: 0
Sat: -100 (Note: minus sign here)
Lightness: 0

Say, O.K. again.
You want to gray scale your image here.

[Step: 8]
Press: Ctrl + A (Select > All)
Should see marching ants.

Press: Shift + Ctrl + C (Edit > Copy Merged)
Press: Ctrl + V (Edit > Paste)

Now change the blending mode light to "Multiphy" and rename the top layer to or as "Sketch"

[Step: 9]
Press Shift + Ctrl + E (Layer > Merge Visible)

[Step: 10]
Next go to Layer (Main Tool Bar) > Duplicate Layer
Rename this layer as or to: Contrast

Change the blending mode of light to darken and the opacity to 30 %

[Step: 11]
Filter > Brush Strokes > Accented Edges
Edge Width: 2
Edge Brightness: 24
Smoothness: 7

Say, O.K.

At this point you can adjust the contrast layer to get a better looking image by uping or lowering the opacity of this layer. Then once your happy with the way things look.

Press: Ctrl + E (Layer > Merge Down)

Now you have a basic filter sketch to work with.

Thanks, Tim. I'm going to give that a try later. Does a lower res image work better than a high res?

hi there .
I like the effect, and have followed your instructions as above
but i get lost on stage 7 . where it says " you want to grey scale your image here " ????
at this point my image is in colour ... although iam not to sure
if you started with a colour or b&w image to start with..
i dont get the result you get ... but if i flatten image then remove colour
then its very simular ..

can you review your instructions , being a bit more specfic ...thanks !!!
i look forward to trying it agian ..

Hi ...

That is just a comment ..

If you follow the instructions then your image will turn to grayscale at this stage. Tim is just telling you why you need to click on OK :)

You can use that for other images as well. It doesn't have to be a sketch at all.
