The real challenge is finding the photo - making it web friendly - and getting it on pixentral before the next guy. I missed out on the puppy -

TonyW

I just missed on a cup of tea - same time so must have just been seconds :). And Kimi - a pillar box is a post or mail box to you.

Tony

kimi_boo

And I would question Jancy on her cup of tea. I don't see any tea in that cup just a bag. ;) :D

I'm glad to see the Brits don't see a compelling need to replace such boxes for no good reason. That particular one appears to date from her father's reign.

I wonder just how far back you could go with these? :)

Lisa: Funny thing is when I saw red I thought of the same thing - knew I had a picture of one of the original VR (Queen Victoria) mailboxes I took in the Peak District one time but took me a while to remember where it was:

And Rusty this has to be well over 100 years old. An expert could date it precisely from the style.

Tony, thanks for the beautiful sunset. On your reply, you'd like to see a bird in flight, I just searched my directory and can't find my folder that I had one in that I really liked. I'm sure I stored it in a safe place:rolleyes:

Peppers, I didn't even think of that. I just thought of one my campfires, the best ones are on my external hard drive though. I totally forgot I have a picture I took a few weeks ago of peppers in my brothers garden.

Janet, that is definately an ugly image. I was not expecting something like that.

This is too fun! What a great idea! I kept reading along and thinking what picture I would have submitted...then I finally reach the end and that's the only request (classic muscle car) I do not have a photo for!! Tony

Hi Rusty and Tony,

Tony, thanks for posting the VR box - they are something I look out for :)

According to the little Shire book on old letter boxes, yours is a Penfold type 1866-1879. It's great to find one in use, I don't think there are that many about now.
This one is at Blist's Hill Victorian working museum (at Ironbridge, Shropshire), but not in use.

http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1LtgVeeKmDCFLxKt8cj2thErfbNnJ_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1LtgVeeKmDCFLxKt8cj2thErfbNnJ)

Apparently there is one at the Black Country working museum in Dudley, am planning a trip there soon, so will get a picture when I go.

This one I saw yesterday (Shropshire Wales border) is a Victorian wall box 1881 - , these are more common, particularly in rural areas, but do take some finding. Sadly they get stolen as being desireable architecture.

I really like it that these old boxes are still about,

Lisa :)

PS too bad I missed the 'something hot' (I was asleep), as at Blist's Hill on Wednesday there were doing iron smelting - very hot and smelly.

Lisa: Mine was in Hartington in Derbyshire and was still in use last time I was there. It's outside the post office here:

http://www.derbyshire-peakdistrict.co.uk/hartington.htm

Might be hard to find a classic muscle car in the UK but I have seen them:

Tony,
thanks for the links - I will have a look on the map and see how far away Hartington is, it looks a nice place for a visit. For that a good tea shop is a necessity and well one with a VR mail box would be a real bonus!

No I don't think I will see a muscle car here, but thank you, I have learned something :)

Charlotte, look at the bottom right corner of the photo. That is me in a shaggy camo outfit, you can see my eyes if you look closely. I dress like that at Halloween and sit there with the candy and scare everyone coming up the driveway. I have a megaphone that does an alien voice. It is really fun to do.:D

Since this is a scavenger hunt, it may take a little longer to scratch through our catalogs of photos to find the exact one to submit or to go out and find the subject to photograph. Question: How much time is allotted to submit a photo?

kimi_boo
September 8th, 2007, 09:02 PM
There is no alloted time. We just wait until the correct photo is posted. :)

That is the beauty of it... We may hit snags where someone does have to go out and take a picture.
That is a good thing. :D

That was also the point of making it mandatory that it had to be one of your own images.

Regarding muscle cars, my husband seemed to think that some of you guys might enjoy seeing a couple of shots of the Chevrolet SS Chevelle. As for me, I'm only interested in knowing there is enough gas in my car to go where I need to go. When I told him our scavenger hunt was for a photo of a muscle car, he was extremely anxious to go with me to our local vintage car location, where surprisingly enough there were a lot of muscle cars. All I wanted to do was go "snap" a shot but we ended up staying for over an hour! Imagine that! It was a lot of fun, however.

NEW RULE!! :D

Everyone is just too fast. :o If duplicate images are posted. (and please check before you post) The first image request is too be followed.

I realize there are times when you will be posting at the same time. But the first image fitting the description, is the image to follow for the next request.

Hopefully this will help with some of the confusion. ;)

It is amazing the images that we have in our collections!

I have a request, as I have found that sometimes trying to follow the threads that have posting threads and comment threads like this one, and the Crop Challenge that I participate in can, at times, be a little difficult. I don't bookmark the individual threads nor do I save all the emails generated by people posting to them. Anyway, my request is this: could we start linking the two threads in the first post so that if I want to go to the posting thread from the comments thread and vice-versa all I have to do is hit the link, preferably in the first post of the thread? It would save searching the threads (at least for me).

Something to think about, and its real easy to do. :)

We have a local railroad that is not only a working railroad, but also provides short trips with dining or wild west shows or mystery rides, etc. It is a lot of fun to rock and roll through the foothills of the Sierra. Also excellent food. We went on the Wild West excursion trip with box lunch a couple of weeks ago. One DGS loves wild west cowboys and rodeos and another little one is crazy about steam engines. This was also a marvelous photo opportunity for me.

"For the first time in 50 years, a Steam Engine will begin operating again on a regular basis in the San Joaquin Valley. Our sister railroad - the new Virginia & Truckee Railway that is being built in Nevada - sent the McCloud #18 steam engine to the Sierra to operate for the next two years."

Oh my, I totally didn't look to see what the next photo was suppose to be until I saw that you said moon. I quickly went and uploaded one from last fall and still made it. Everyone must be having dinner. Most of my images are on my EHD and I don't have it connected right now so I am surprised when I manage to find one that fits. Most of them I find are ones I have posted here over the past year so they are in my Saved for Web file. I really need to charge my camera batteries so I can try some others too. It took me a while to get use to the instant messing and emails with the punctuation and grammar, now it doesn't bother me and it shows in a lot of my posts:o Now when I'm at work I have to double check my emails before I send them out to clients and make sure I have abbreviated anything.:D

I posted this in the main thread as well.

I am getting mixed up as to the rules here. I thought we were suppose to post the images asked for and not something similar. Shouldn't we be on the "child in a toy car or truck" since a bike was posted? Or at least the British flag since Sela's was the State of Hawaii flag?

Kimi, I think we need some clarification. Sorry to be a kill joy or to complain and this is fun but I think we need to do it right for fairness to all who want to participate.

Kim, I don't want to come of as the big bad wolf. But....

This was my reply in the other thread:

Guys... you can't post just for the sake of posting. We need to work hard to keep this as real as possible. Post ONLY the exact image that has been asked for.

If you have to ask... does this count. Then NO it does not count.

Post only EXACTLY what was asked for!

No one is getting fussed at. I know everyone is having a good time and that is the point of the hunt. But it needs to be done correctly. :)

Let's go back to the asked for British Flag.

Sorry, everyone. I didn't mean to cause confusion to anyone. I should have done some research before I posted what I thought was a British flag, but turned out to be the Hawaiian flag. (I still get the Puerto Rican and Cuban flag mixed up!)

Forgive me.

I don't know, Sela; I think we're probably going to have to punish you for posting the wrong flag. Something awful like making you post the flags of all 50 states and a handful of countries. ;)

You made a mistake, don't worry yourself about it. Besides, it was good for a laugh and I, for one, am looking for things to laugh about these days so THANK YOU very much!!

Sela, Thanks for posting that link. It shows that England, Scotland, Wales, and other members of the UK have separate individual flags. The Union Jack is for Great Britain. I learned something new today.
[EDIT] Since I got curious, and I assume many of us non-British don't really know how the UK/Great Britain/British Isles are/is organized, you might want to check out this link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom I think I'm smarter now than I was before, but I'm not sure.

Thanks, Gail, for the link. I will check it out. I still can't believe I did that, posted the Hawaiian flag for the British flag. As my son would put it, "What a loser!" How embarrassing! I guess I didn't think it through enough or investigate it and just was excited that I had the picture of my son with the flag hanging over his head...wrong flag, though! Oh, well. By the way, I can find the US on a map...I think!

Again, thanks for the link...I'm off to get educated!

I'm back after getting educated..a bit, that is. Here is what I learned:

The Union Jack appears on the Hawaiian flag because the Hawaiian Islands were part of the British Empire, discovered and claimed for Britain by Captain Cook in the 1700's. The British called the islands the Sandwich Island, having been named after Lord Sandwich by Captain Cook.I am not certain but I believe the U.S.A. took possesion of the Hawaiian Islands around 1898.

Well, there you go!

Sorry my request for glass beads got us stuck again.:( Just because I have a bazillion beads myself I thought someone else would too! :) I would have changed my request but haven't been able to get online today.

Maybe we should come up with something to make the scavenger hunt more interesting/challenging. How about requiring that the photo of the requested subject be obviously enhanced in Elements before it's posted? Like maybe turned into a sketch or watercolor? It would encourage more practice with the techniques. For example...show me an image of a lake that you've made into a watercolor. Or...show me a garden photo in which only one flower is in color. The images may not change as quickly but it would add interest to the challenge. Any thoughts?

Julie, I just looked at your gallery and you have some images there that show you certainly would be able to participate! I love your "paintings" of Gidget and Shoal Creek. The scavenger hunt could be encouragement for everyone who wants to play, including the newbies, to try something new. I vote for keeping the Scavenger Hunt the way it is! :) We have other challenges to help hone our photoshop skills; Kimi's Creative Homework, the Crop Challenge, and Grant's Challenges. It's nice that the Scavenger Hunt doesn't require any manipulation of the photo at all - it makes it accessible to everyone, regardless of skill level or time constraints.

That said, I would suggest that the first person who notices that a photo request hasn't been met after 24 hours (or maybe even 12 hours) be allowed to make a new request.

Just my thoughts...

That's true it would push us to sit down and get a bit creative. We could do a 1st choice would be altered and if you don't have altered then use a regular photograph you've taken.

I'm not sure it's slowed down because it's getting old, some of the requests might limit some people from submitting (i.e. when I asked for a pic of Hollywood or the Hollywood sign).

We could do a pic from every state ... start with A.

lisabee
September 27th, 2007, 12:51 PM
hi, :)

I've been joining in and following the stops and starts too, I agree with Kim and Julie, it should stay basically as it is (ie the image doesn't have to be edited), but I think the next choice should remain with the same person if possible.
I wonder if 12 hours is passing on a bit too soon, you know allowing for different time zones and people's lives/schedules, also if I post at 4pm (whatever time zone) I'm not going to be around at 4am, ie 12 hours later to check on it. I tend to think towards 24 hours is better, giving more people chance to join in too or even go and take a relevant photo.

then....

I'm not sure it's slowed down because it's getting old, some of the requests might limit some people from submitting (i.e. when I asked for a pic of Hollywood or the Hollywood sign).

We could do a pic from every state ... start with A.

that if it runs as a series can make it quite difficult for anyone not in the US to join in :), unless anyone has a lot of holiday snaps.

Anyway I'm sure slow and fast is all quite normal for something like this, I don't mind, it's fun to do and interesting to see what people post

Hi Guys... If a request has not been met by the 12 hour time frame it can be changed. Everyone seems to be getting really specific in there request. :o

That was why on my last one I said I wanted to see an image that represented Power. Maybe we can start looking along those lines. Jodi ran a challenge like that a while back. They would post a word and you would post an image that went along with it.

Hi Suzanne,

The way I understand the time zone issue, the times you see from any post is your time zone. I have noticed in the past, when someone in another part of the world posts a new message while I am online, the time shown is in my time.

AngelicKim
September 27th, 2007, 11:22 PM

Time Zone All timestamps displayed on the forums can be automatically corrected to show the correct time for your location in the world. Simply select the appropriate time zone from the list below.

Time Zone: In addition, you may set the appropriate option to allow for daylight savings time in your part of the world. Automatically detect DST settings DST corrections always on DST corrections always off DST Correction Option:

Yes, that seems to be how it works.
What I've noticed is that if I log in to read the posts I get the time for the UK, ie my time zone, showing up, BUT if I don't log in I then get a timezone for the US showing (haven't gone to the trouble of working out which one) so there must be a default operating then.

Its not like it is a copywrite infringement or anything.

I'm sorry, but that's exactly what it is. At least according to my limited understanding of copyright law.

Please understand, I'm not trying to start a fight or spoil the fun here because I've posted some of my pictures in these threads also and thoroughly enjoy seeing what everyone is coming up with. And I realize most here are doing this for fun and may or may not care about it, and I doubt someone is going to start tossing lawyers at us any time soon. The problem would be if someone thought it really was OK to do that and took someone's stuff who really did care and then found out about it. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of the coming storm, if you know what I mean.

Hmmm.....I just gotta be the fly in the ointment on that one. Please re-read your statement there and tell me you really believe its OK to take pictures of other people's pictures and repost them?????

I did just that when Michelle asked for a picture of herself. I knew that maybe only two people on the forum would have such a picture and when they didn't come up with the goods I went to a couple of threads where I knew there were photos of Michelle and photographed one of them!

I know that somewhere I have a picture of a puffin taken about six or seven years ago in my pre-digital days on a trip to the Farne Islands......I'll see if I can dig it out!

I'm guessing that a caramel apple is what we call a 'toffee apple' here in the UK? It's an apple dipped into hot toffee and cooled down. usually sold on sticks. Haven't had one of those in over 40 years!

You are absolutely correct, and the statement(s) we all tacitly agreed to when we joined just reinforce what you have said.

Thanks for having the courage to remind us of these agreements and of the copyright law...

Please don't take this the wrong way, but you should be aware that your thoughts about the use of that photo are incorrect. I don't think we should necessarily wait for the person who posted a "dead" photo request to come back and change it. It can take forever! How about anyone who notices one has gone stale just change the request themself? That way we can keep things moving along...

October 16th, 2007, 03:33 PM
Tom, I too got that notification and when I came to reply it was not here. I have also deleted my post regarding the issue as well as the photo I uploaded that caused the person to respond. I had read the copy write issues on the site I got a photo from and took my own photo of it. I was merely trying to get the thread moving and like I said I researched it before posting but have deleted it to not cause any further problems or issues. This whole thing was for fun and to me it is no longer fun. I will keep up with it just to see the interesting request and post but I am no longer going to participate.

Julie, I think your idea of not waiting is a good one. I posted and deleted as I said to try to get it moving again but sorry it didn't help. If anyone is interested, I had asked for warm woven mittens. My post read Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens...blah, blah, blah. I would like to see warm woven mittens.

I apologize to all for trying to have fun and get the thread going again.

Hello everyone,

I was simply confused about getting the e-mail and not finding the post(s) after going to the Forum thread. I did not intend to cause such a ruckus by asking this question.

Being a relatively new user of the Forum I did not know that posters can delete their own posts (or edit them), and I was wondering out loud (in print, actually:o) what was happening and secretly I wondered whether a moderator had done something to the posts identified in the e-mail.

Hope everyone is back on track now so the Scavenger Hunt can proceed.

I'd just like to point out that the lyrics to that song are '....warm woollen mittens'

Tina,

Do you realise that your request for toast and jelly has changed the course of history (well my personal history)?

I had planned on having toast with egg or marmalade this morning for breakfast, but ended up with blackcurrant jam instead all in the cause of posting a scavenger hunt picture!:)

I hope the toast and Jam or Jelly was good. My granc children always want "Bird" jelly on their toast. Bird jelly is the jelly we feed the oriels when they come up to the house. It is just plain grape jelly from a jar but they think it is something special. I tell them it will make them sing like a bird if they eat it. They laugh and eat it with a smile.
Tina B
Yes I think the picture you posted works jam or jelly is what I should have written as that is what I was looking for. Lets not get hung up on technical stuff again.

Rita, I just thought that by 'real rainbow" that maybe you didn't count a rainbow over waterfalls as real but that you wanted to see one left after a storm. Just wanted to clarify it. If we do a bunch of rainbows and find the pot of gold do we have to share it with everyone or just the people posting the rainbow photos.:D:D

Right?

Rusty,

You're correct. It's the common name for November 5th which commemorates the attempted blowing up of the Houses of Parliament by Guy Fawkes in 1605.

There's bonfires lit with effigies of Guy Fawkes burnt on top and tons of fireworks. I'll have to see if I can get some photos....

I think the only place in Canada where it's still may be celebrated is Newfoundland and it's dying out there (too many fires). I certainly remember making guys to burn on the bonfire when I was a kid in England.

http://www.bonfirenight.net/bonfire.php

And most curiously the word guy does originate from Guy Fawkes. Originally it was British slang term for a grotesque or wierd-looking male. The Americans took it over and broadened the meaning a lot. So the next time someone says "Hey you guys" remember the 5th of November!

I was hoping for a real marshmallow...maybe with some gahram crackers and a piece of chocolate on the side!!!!

After I posted the next request, marshmallows, I felt a bit odd doing it...the fires were very scary and very sad. I guess I am finally able to look back at that time and not feel so anxious about the whole ordeal that we all went through. I guess I was just trying to make a little joke out of posting smoke which led me to think of marshmallows...you know what I mean?
