Most tutorials you read will tell you to make a new blank page File>New or Ctrl>N. Then it will say to open your photos and scrapbooking supplies you want to use by choosing File>Open or Ctrl>O.

You can use the Move Tool (V) to drag your images down to your blank scrapbook page in your photo bin. When you drag DOWN your layers are named Layer 1, Layer 2, etc.

With PSE 5 you can also use the Move Tool (V) to drag your images from your photo bin UP to your scrapbook page (active image). When you drag UP to your scrapbook page your layers are named with the file name. This will help you find an image later to use again or give credit to a designer, etc. Dragging UP takes a little bit longer than dragging down if it is a photo or scrapbook paper image, elements usually take the same amount of time.

Here's the new tip...
I read this on a blog recently and I can't find the source so if someone who also read it could put the source here that would be great. Anyway here's the tip....

Instead of using the Open command you can choose File>Place and the image (only 1 image at a time) you are opening will be placed exactly in the middle of your blank scrapbook page. You will also have sizing handles around it to size or move it until you check the checkmark. If you make a selection in another location before you "place" it the image will be placed in the area of the selection.

Patty - I often open my files from the "start" button - and then drag into Elements, but after each "drag" the file I've opened minimizes.

Other than having two windows open at one time, by using "tile" - have you found a way to open more than one paper/embellishment at the same time?

I've tried highlighting more than one item prior to dragging, but that doesn't work in PSE4.

Janice... when I am going thru my elements and I am not sure which ones will work. I hold down the Ctrl key and click on the ones I want as I scroll thru the folder. Hit open and it will open all of the ones you selected.

It is great. Then I play around and see which ones work and which ones I just put back. :)

Hope this is what you were looking for?

Interesting tip ------ but ------ in PSE3/Mac, the File>Place menu option seems to have a "different" function (in other words, doesn't "function" at all LOL)

I've never used that option before, but when I tried to follow your tip, I was surprised to find that very few of the thousands of images I have on my computer were available for "placing". None of the .jpgs or .gifs were available and very few PSDs - don't know why that is, and I'll probably not use the option anyway, but just thought I'd mention this problem in case some other readers are pulling out their hair trying to get it to work.

Take care, Margaret

OK I forgot to add that I am working in the Maximize Mode. This works for Windows PSE4 & PSE5 for sure. I don't work in Cascade or Tile view because it's just too cluttered for me.
If you're working in Maximize Mode make sure that your photo bin is expanded.
I hope that helps!
