I've done this before and now I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I am trying to blur the background with gaussian blur on the top layer, then using the paintbrush and painting back in the parts I want sharp. I thought I needed to simplify the layer, but simplify is grayed out. My fore and background colors are correct. It's right in front of my eyes but I can't see it. Help!!

I think you either need a mask or use the eraser(sp). I am sure someone else will have better info.

Okay, let me try the eraser. That sounds right. Thanks.

The eraser was what I needed. I knew it was something simple, but I had a brain block!

Hi Suzanne ...
The eraser works fine but if you use a mask then you are able to "paint" areas back in if you remove a little too much :)

For quick, easy fixes I only use the eraser with two layers
But for anything more complex, the only way to do it easily is to use a layer mask. Once you've used one - you'll never go back. LOL

Suzanne,
Have you viewed the Creating Depth of Field video in the subscribers' videos? It has a unique method for blurring the background. It's dated January 5, 2007.
