I tried using the Marquee tool to cut out an Oval from my picture but all it did was cut out a rectangle enclosing the oval marching ants. Am I doing something wrong or is the only way to cut an oval is by using the Cookie Cutter? I am using PSE4.

Thanks!

I may not be understanding your Q.

Make your selection using the Oval Marquee Tool
With the ants marching, hit Ctrl-J
That cuts out your selection, the oval, and puts it onto a new layer.

To see what you've got, you must turn off the eyeball for your background layer.

If this isn't what you want, post again; we'll figure it out :)

Thanks Rusty! I will try it out again! What I was doing is pretty basic and that is why I was surprised.

I will try it out and post my message later! :)

When you select the rectangular marquee tool there is an elliptical one in the fly out menu as well , or you can press M to toggle between the two. Many of tools have extra tools besides the one that's displayed in the toolbox. The elliptical marquee tool lets you draw ovals or circles. Hold down the shift key as you drag to constrain to a circle (using elliptical marquee tool) or square (using rectangular marquee tool.)
