hello:
I am a beginner PSE4 user and have a fundamental question regarding managing my files. I have many pictures that I am going to need to discard after viewing them in the organizer but am not sure that if I delete it from the catalog if it infact deletes it from my computer.

If it does not how am I to know which ones I need to delete once I go to Windows Explorer.

I appreciate your input!

There should be a litle checkbox for "also delete selected files from harddrive". I think it comes up in a confirm box after you hit delete from catalog.

When you delete from the Organizer you get the choice (there's a check box to check) of just deleting from the Organizer or also deleting from your hard drive. If you check the box it's really gone. If you don't check it the file is still on your hard drive but you won't see it in Organizer (but you could add it back later).

PS That's how it works in PSE5 - can't remember if PSE4 was the same but I think it was.

How about the reverse? If I delete something from the HD will it be gone from the Organiser? I'm having memory problems opening the Organiser & Kimi suggested getting rid of some rather large layered files to see if it would help. I've never done it that way round, usually I delete from the Organiser and then decide whether ot also delete from the HD.

Bayla,

I always delete from the organizer and decide if I want it off the HD or not then. If you delete from the harddrive first it will be in the organizer but it will be a disconnected file and the organizer cannot find it.

Vesta,

But at the moment I can't delete anything from the Organiser cos I can't open the wretched thing. I was hoping that by deleting some very large files from the HD it might sort out the memory error I keep getting which is preventing the Organiser from opening.

Vesta,

2gb RAM is hopefully arriving tomorrow....Kimi thinks it will solve my problem, I think Nick is not so optimistic:( I just hope I'll be able to fit the modules in:)

Bayla,

Have you tried opening the organizer from the editor? Just a thought.

Vesta,

Yeah. From the Editor, from Windows Explorer, every which way. But thanks for the suggestion. Sorry to the OP for hijacking this thread...I didn't mean to:o

No problem - I have learnt quite a bit from this thread. Given I am a newbie I am sure I am going to be deleting pictures every which way and it is nice to know now what I can and cannot go!

Bayla,

Deleting a file from outside Organiser won't remove it from the catalog. It'll just cause the file to become disconnected as far as Organiser is concerned, because it won't know where it's gone. I doubt that'll improve your situation, although, who knows??!

Has the memory arrived? Did you fit it?

Here is a simple, manageable solution to each of these issues. The downside is that you may use more memory and you must be diligent to keep your files/folders in the order you want these.

I suggest downloading your camera images intio a labelled and dated folder in your documents. Immediately copy this folder and upgrade the label to the style you desire including the word "copy" or some similar designation. Now delete images from your Organizer and from the hard drive as you work. Periodically copy your partially deleted folder and upgrade your original copied image folder to rid this of any unwanted image files.

This system is easy to follow. This system protects you from arbitrarily deleting desired images and still minimizes your net storage. This also weights your ability to find images both on the Organizer and on you and your computer.....a true benefit.

Just my thoughts on the combined subjects here,
Tom
