Good Morning boys and girls. It's hump day again. :)

As always this assignment is open to EVERYONE who is reading the forum.
We had so many participate last week, I need to take a moment and say Thank You!
Everyone did a wonderful job! I hope this week we get as many students.

Remember.... if you see an image that you like. Please let your fellow students know about it in the comment thread. Everyone likes a pat on the back.
Have Fun!!

There is no right or wrong way, get in there and play.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week we are going to play with "Brush Mask".
It is brought to you by the Letter T. Thanks Tony! :cool:
Some basic directions.
Find Image
Create new layer above and fill with white. Change blend mode to lighten.
Create new layer above and stamp your brush mask on the layer in black.
Use Ctrl T to transform your mask into the size you want.
Ctrl E to merge onto your white layer.
Your image should now show. :D
Here is the link to the tutorial.
http://www.icondoit.net/ps_tuts/mask_basics/masking_brushes.htm
The tutorial goes beyond the basic directions posted above. You can work depending on your level. If you have made or would like to make a brush mask to share with the class that would be Fantastic!
Here is a brush set for you too start with.
If you know of some others, please share with the class by posting a link to them in the comment thread.
I am finally figuring out masking. Here is a link to another site with some large mask brushes.
mutsie.deviantart.com/gallery/
And here is my attempt. I used a gradient fill, adjusted the brush size and then blurred the brush.
Oops! My first attachment. It came out a bit big. Any tips on making it the right size?
Bonnie,
Most of us use Pixentral to upload pictures. I would suggest using Save for Web from Editor making the longest side about 700 pixels which will give you a decent sized thumbnail, then go to www.pixentral.com (http://www.pixentral.com) and follow instructions for uploading your image. Once your image is in Pixentral, copy the second url under your picture (labelled 'Forums') and then paste it into your post. Make sure you copy the whole url by triple clicking on it - the link is long & if you miss out one tiny bracket it won't work!
Here's my try - not crazy about the end result - a bit too frilly for my taste - might have to go more grungy for my next try :D Brush from Deviant Art, Outer Frame is one of the the PSE5 custom shapes. I've shown the layers so you can see how it was done (I used soft light for the gradient fill layer). Text added later from a Background Duplicate as I forgot to include it in the mask layer to start with :).
Hi,
thanks Kimi and Tony for this hw, first I read it and didn't get it at all :(, but then I started to have a go and it made sense.
As I haven't added very much at all to Elements (yet), I thought I would experiment with the brushes that are there which I haven't tried. So under faux finish brushes, I used mesh large, setting it to approx 1400 px and then using the transform, just stretched it a little to fit my image.
this is what I got
http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/14T27xQDYI6bSDRFpdyJqb7Rf6Fns0_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=14T27xQDYI6bSDRFpdyJqb7Rf6Fns0)
I know it is a bit linear (understatement) but I quite like it. I did try a few other brushes too which I liked but didn't note what they were.
I will be experimenting some more as I think this is a technique I will be using in future, thanks again for sharing :)
:( oh dear I typed a post saying what I did here and the forum lost it whilst connecting.
So here goes again - this one, looks 'traditional' maybe, I used the torn paper brush which I reflected to get a more symmetrical look (rotated/flipped the layer). Lowered opacity on the mask to get all of the image showing through and then made a few changes via layer styles.
Here is another. I was digging in my frame folder and I have 6 png files named untitled. I clicked and they are all mask. Of course because they have no name, I don't know where they came from. :( (are how long I have had them)
I have no idea how I ended up with this or even if I should post it. I'm not terribly familiar with masks and I got a little lost. I'll practice and see if I can do better next time.
Here's mine. This is a mask I sort of created as I went. I added the name sort of as an afterthought.
Kimi, I am always amazed to learn more things that result from changing blend modes. This picture is no great shakes but what an interesting technique and result...
Thank you for yet another fun assignment. It is really great technique! There are so many more brushes I want to try.
I used the Week 28 technique(with the Anisotropic Filter) on the photo and then did the brush mask.
The house we stayed in this week had this driftwood hanger on the wall and my daughter hung the bathingsuits on it after a day at the beach. I thought it would make an interesting photo.
