How can you change the photo layout to portrait instead of landscape?

Hello and welcome to the forum. To change the orientation from portrait to landscape go the to Menu bar to Image>Rotate then chose either 90 degrees left or right.

This probably is something simple, but I am not referring to the image, I can rotate the image okay. I am talking about the actual layout--the page. I want to work with the images on a portrait layout instead of a landscape layout.

Open the layout you want to use. Before you add any images or additional layers, rotate the layout as I described above. Or put the images in rotated the way they should look once the layout is done. Merge all layers and then do the Image>Rotate>90 degrees left or right.

And for future reference - that rotate screen has two parts - the parts above the line pertain to the entire canvas and all it's contents - the part below the line rotates only the layer you are on
