Are you ready for some football?! :D

Our September challenge is to create a coordinating "mega kit" around the theme "Autumn". Fall/Autumn of course brings to mind a variety of things, inlcuding fall foliage and football. Even if you do not consider yourself a scrapper please feel free to join the challenge!

The guidelines for this challenge are pretty simple:

1. Using the theme & provided color scheme (please make sure your color #'s match) create four (4) items to contribute. (background paper, embellishments, word art etc...) Any metal items should be created using "shineybrass" form the MetalSheen (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=extensionDetail&extid=1045065) collection found on Adobe Exchange.

2. Make sure your name or nickname is part of the file name, so that you can receive design credit.

3. Email your 4 items to me at WagsQP *at* gmail.com. I will then send you the code and link to download (or upload) contents from www.Viovio.com who has volunteered to host.

4. Post your creations here!

5. The challenge will run from Sept 4th - 25th. Content will be available for download until Oct 2nd. Since you will be able to download any time after you have submitted your (first?)4 items I would suggest checking often for new creations you would like to add to your collection. :)

Since the full purpose of this challenge is to create an mega kit each of you can use AND since we love to post layouts we've made, participation in this challenge means that you will agree to allow others to use your creations (for personal use only) and post them online with the appropriate credits.

Helpful hints:

Save as psd in case you need to edit, then FLATTEN the image prior to saving it as a jpeg - this helps to reduce the file size, also saving it as a 9 or 10 instead of 12 helps with file size too.

Background paper should be 12x12 (3600x3600) and created at 300 dpi.

For items with transparent areas remember to save as .png file - and to crop closely around the item - .png's are huge files and even the transparent (blank) areas increase file size.

Wendy has some great tutorials on creating items for scrapbooking in the subscriber section on this site. And premier members of ScrappersGuide.com just got some great tutorials on creating grungy looks (hint, hint).

Please respect other's copyrights and do not use "personal use only" items in the creations you submit.

As always if you have any questions, please ask! :)

Baby fell asleep on my lap, so I decided to do a little creating since I'm not able to move. Here is what I've come up with so far. (5 papers, 5 embellishments)

http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1bbVUrcliKnbvb963HB5yYr0W0fOQi_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1bbVUrcliKnbvb963HB5yYr0W0fOQi)

Nothing too fancy in that lot. I had/have some other ideas, but can't get my "define pattern from selection" to work for me. All I can do is make brushes. Don't know why it isn't cooperating. :(

Hey Y'all... I'm new, but have been lurking around looking at the forums here since I got PSE5 a week ago... I thought I'd join the challenge, I have never done anything like this, so hopefully it's right up the alley it's supposed to be.

September 4th, 2007, 05:39 PM
Are we doing only parts of scrapbook kits, i.e., papers, embellishments, word art, frames, etc. - or are we doing Quick Pages, too?

Amanda's work can easily be used as a quick page - that's why the question crossed my mind.

Wags374
September 4th, 2007, 06:00 PM
Very nice Amanda!

To get the picture to show up - copy and paste the entire link next to "Forum" below the picture.

Jan - The primary purpose is to create pieces of a mega kit. However, I don't think it would be a problem if someone wanted to submit a quick page as an additional item above and beyond the 4 minimum.

Thanks!

Just a quick question...when sending our items to you, do I just need to send you the PSE files seperately? as one? zipped?

Individual attachments or a single zip file would be fine.

Amanda, I totally love your frames and Jane, your kit is wonderful. Now I have a question. I wanted to use some blending modes but my colors change. Is it possible to keep the original color? Thanks.

Wendy
September 5th, 2007, 04:54 PM
Hi Sarah ...

When you apply different blending modes then it does change the colours ...

September 6th, 2007, 12:25 AM
Hmmm.... would it be possible to do a hue/saturation after applying the blend modes to make the color's match?

The color numbers are all on the swatch, so that should help with matching.

Kathy
September 6th, 2007, 08:47 AM
Jane,

Someone more knowledgable than me should probably answer that question, but I believe that you would need the Colour Match Adjustment tool in CS which is not available in PSE.

If you do colour match ...... I believe that you would lose the effect of the blend. For instance, if you start out with one of the base colours as your bottom layer, add some grunge on the next layer using the same colour in Normal mode .... you will see no effect. If you blend the grunge layer in say Screen mode , it will lighten the base layer in the areas where the grunge is applied giving you a "tint" of the base colour. Multiply will give you a "shade" of the base colour.

I am not sure if my explanation is exactly correct.

Here's a Color Swatch attached with those 6 colors for anyone who'd like it. Unzip it and put in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\Presets\Color Swatches, then restart Elements.

Thanks for the response on the color question. Hue/Sat and I don't get along very well.:( I thought I had read somewhere that if I put the color I want in the color picker box, bring up hue/sat and then click on colorize that it would change the color of my element to what I want. Doesn't work. I tried the replace color brush which works fairly well on light colored objects but not so well on dark objects. I tried desaturating but that didn't help. So now the paper I designed is a tiny bit darker or lighter than the original color. And I did use the color numbers to start with. Jane, I'm going to post what I've done and if it's not acceptable let me know and I'll start over. No problem.

Jane, here is what I've come up with. As you can see, I kinda got carried away (I was having way too much fun!). If you want me to delete some of the items just let me know. Totally no problem. I don't want to overburden you with too many files. And thanks for all the work you put into this. The clock is transparent and I saved the hands seperate so you can set the time to whatever you want.

Thanks Diana! That sure is handy. Is that a Photoshop only sort of thing, or can we make those in Elements too?

To Create Custom Color Swatches in Elements
Select Text Tool
In the Options Bar, click the dropdown arrow beside Color
Click on More Colors, which brings up the Color Picker
Type in the color code or pick a color from the color palette, then click OK
It will add your color to the others in the swatch, but don’t worry about that now
Repeat until you get the colors you want added
When you’re done, from the Color dropdown, click Options
Select Preset Manager
In the Preset Manager window, Ctrl-click on the colors you want to keep in your custom swatch, so that each of them have a black border around them
Now click the Save Set button
When the Save window comes up, give your swatch a name and at “Save In” at the top navigate to the Presets/Color Swatches folder
Click Save
Restart Elements to see your swatch in the Color Options dropdown.

Under Window from the Menu, you can click on Color Swatches if you want to have a floating swatch palette, or you can dock it in your Palette Bin if desired, but clicking on More from the Color Swatch palette, and selecting “place in palette bin when closed” and then click the X to close it.

Here’s a link for a tutorial how to automatically create a custom color swatch from the colors in a photo, so you can create coordinating backgrounds, etc.:

Janice, I love your bows! How on earth did you do that?

I have bow shapes in my cookie cutter - I can't remember if they came with the program or where I got them.

I first made a plaid of the colors - then cut out the bow - and duplicated it - and swiveled the top layer slightly. Then I stroked the bow and changed that stroke into the gold edging from the layer style.

I love that bow, but being so open it has it's limitations - it looks best on a solid surface -

Kathy and Nikki, great stuff.

Reka, as Janice said it is a minimum of 4 to participate. Jane didn't specify a maximum.

Janice, I can't really take credit for the embellishments. They are custom shapes from Elements or cliparts I have that I just added the shiny brass too. The yard line ribbon is a different story, that took a while and still isn't what I really wanted but it will do. This is all new to me other than the QP Challenge last month.

Here is a football kit I did last year for Nita's old scrap challenges.

Okay, while I have beautiful imaginative creations flying around in my head, I've been on a downward spiral recently trying to accomplish technically what I want to. I mentioned before I'm dealing with a learning curve. So, while I probably won't participate in this particular challenge, could someone please answer a couple of questions?
1. I found Adobe Exchange (I'm sure that speaks volumes) I even located the MetalSheet collection and downloaded it. I looked at the tutorial on this website about adding to style etc. I have put the asl (no it's not zipped) in Programs/Adobe/Photoshop Elements 5.0/Presets/Styles, AND I have shut down and restarted Elements. It is not in my choices in Layer Styles. I've referred to every resource to which I have access. You guys are my last resort.
2. Last question, I promise, how do I make sure my color # match? I realize when I go to color swatches in Elements and point to a given color, I get a number, but is there a down and dirty quick way to figure that out?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I'm truly frustrated, because I generally catch on a bit quicker.
Thank you,
Carol Ann:confused:

When you click on the foreground color chip at the bottom of the tool bar, the color picker comes up. Type in the code that was given in the instructions for the six colors to use. You'll see the # in the bottom right corner of the color picker, just replace the number there with the code # you want and that will become your foreground color. Hope this helps.

Kim, I am really glad to see your football theme. My grandson is playing this year and I don't have anything appropriate:eek:
Kathy, your papers are beautiful.
Nikkil, very cool frame and I love the leaf design on your paper.

If you open your color swatches after you change your color, you can click the paint bucket onto the color swatches board and save the color - a sreen will come up to name it -

You can then change your color 5 more times and save them all - then they will be available in the color swatches.

But what I did was make a project with the six colors on it - and I keep that project open and whenever I want to change colors, I use the color picker to click on the swatch I want. I think it's easier than the swatch screen.

Sarah, I got my paper by:
started with three layers a different color on each. Set the blending modes on the second and top layers to "dissolve" and lowered the opacity to about 60% (this is truly trial and error to get the right "dissolved/noisy" appearance.

Then I applied a smoke brush from Falln BrushSmokeSet 2 which can be downloaded from the link:

http://falln-brushes.deviantart.com/gallery/

I varied the background colors, opacity, angle, and spacing on the brushes; and played around until I was satisfied. Believe me, there were a few pages that went by the wayside before this one made it. I'll probably try some more. The beauty of this challenge is almost anything goes.

Sarah,

Thank you for the compliment. Your kit is really lovely. I especially like the three papers on the right hand side.

Everyone's items are truly creative and a real indication of what this forum is about ...... a willingness to share.

One problem ... it's addictive ... so many ideas ..... so many colour combinations ..... when to stop experimenting. :D

Looking forward to seeing more creations.

A big Thank You to Jane for hosting.

I love reading through the forum as I have leaned lots from you wonderful, creative, and talented people. Many of you have kindly responded to some of my questions.

I read Jane's thread on this challenge and decided this was a good time for me to take the plunge.

Not sure how to post, I will add my files as an attachment. I Hope I fully understand this concept. I will e-mail Jane my layouts with png, psd, and jpeg files.

Kim - this is how I understand it will work

Jane is working with Viovio to have us upload our stuff to them - and then Jane will provide a password or link or something that will allow us to download whatever we choose.

The only reason Jane has asked us to provide her our stuff in an email is so that she only provides access to the downloads to people who are creating "their share" of the kit.

Right now, the site is not ready for us - and Jane is busy this weekend. We'll hear from her when she gets some time.

AngelicKim
September 8th, 2007, 09:49 PM
You only need to email me 4 items to show that you are really participating and then I will give you the link/password to upload those and anything else you create after you do that.

Clear at mud? :D

Janice, here is a post Jane made yesterday and it is also stated in #3 on the instructions on the main post. Jane is only have file sent to her to verify that you have 4 qualifying items to participate before she sends you the link and passwork. You can then upload your own and download ones already uploaded once they have started being uploaded.

Wags374
September 8th, 2007, 11:12 PM
Y'all rock! You have the instructions correct - I just need to see 4 items in my inbox, so I know you are participating (and if I have to I will upload the files, if someone doesn't follow through completely.)

Quick Pages are fine as extra contributions, but we need to see at least 4 individual items, papers, embellishments, word art etc in any combination.

Got the goat pasture fence fixed - found where the guys (i.e. hubby and a friend) forgot to staple the fence to one corner post. And I added a second gate, and gave the goat barn another coat of paint while I was at it. Got everyone fed - they loved the zucchini cobbler! (I know it sounds werid, but it is really yummy!!)

I'm working two jobs for the moment and the work month for my old job starts tomorrow, so I'm going to be a wee bit busy. But just as soon as I have the link for where on Viovio we will be uploading I will start answering my emails. Thank you all so much for your patience! :)

start playing with making background paper - and then go from there. That's where all my stuff came from.

I made a background paper using the chosen colors - then made a pattern from the background paper - then cut the shapes using the cookie cutter - then decorated them with gold. (kinda went nuts with the gold LOL)

For those who don't know how to make a pattern to make a paper.

Make a complex background paper - plain ones don't work as well.

edit> define pattern

then

layer> new fill layer> pattern

on the next screen name the layer or just click OK

then on the next screen there is a slider. That is the secret - the slider

change the size of the pattern to make some really unique paper -

setting the slider on 1 makes herringbone

10 or 20 usually makes a great patterned page
___________________________________

You can also make a selection with the marquee tool from any page
(square selections work best)

and choose

edit> define pattern

then follow the above steps

_______________________
more advanced

make your pattern following the above instructions

then -

to make a patterned shape:

Open a shape template first

then
layer> new fill layer> pattern

then on the first screen - check the box that says group with previous layer

then go to the scale screen

when you are trying out different scales of your pattern, it will preview on the shape

Helps for getting perspective on how your pattern will look in the shape

I've been working with Elements for a year now and just learned patterns using scale a few months ago. Like Jane said - doing things the hard way is how you learn the program - how it sticks in you mind. When you struggle, you never forget what you learned.

During half-time (I'm a NFL football FANatic!) I was reviewing my cruise scrapbook that came over the weekend and admiring the wrap around cover. (A scenic shot from the top of Cadillac Mountian near Bar Harbor Maine that includes our ship...) And it occured to me that with a good shot of a football and/or other related equipment, you could easily create a really cool wrap around cover for a photobook.

I've seen some paper and elements presented here that would work great! Maybe when I get a moment I will do a mock up of what I was envisioning....

Yeah, I know I should be answering all your emails, and getting my paying work done - but is the first Sunday of football....:D

Kim, in this day and age, almost any color gridiron goes. When Boise State gets on TV again, just take a gander at their field. I personally think it should be "turf" green, though. But some (like my kids and grandkids) would say I am old fashioned. Nice job, by-the-way.

That will make an awesome cover! Plenty of space for a title and a picture or two on the font and back. :)

Just remember not to put anything important within a 1/2 inch of the edges for a softcover book - or with in an inch for a hardcover book due to the wrap around.

AngelicKim
September 9th, 2007, 07:45 PM

Thanks, Jane. I used the custom shape tool - "oval frame" to make one link, then applied the shinybrass to it. Then I duplicated it a number of times. I "hooked" the links together by moving them so that they slightly overlapped, then used the eraser tool to erase the part of the link that should be beneath the other one.

I made the larger chain first. The smaller ones were the same chain, just resized, and distorted with the shear tool.

Hi Jane ...

As a general guide you do need to get permission from the copyright holders to use things like Brushes, Shapes, Layer Styles etc etc on kits like this. Usually if it doesn't say you can use things for commercial use then they are private use only ..

There are some around that let you use them commercially but its a much smaller number that those that are solely for private use.

Wendy :)

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. Don't forget Wendy also has a good tutorial for making tags. Once you understand the basics, it's easy to figure out how to make different shapes. I also figured out that the staples are just the line shape with small circle shapes added to each end and a layer style applied.
Can't wait to see new creations today. I'm really enjoying seeing what everyone comes up with.

Any updates on what is happening with the Challenge?

Regarding TOU of brushes ....... if we use brushes downloaded from the Adobe Exchange or elsewhere to create backgounds, etc. ..... are we breaking any rules as long as we credit the brushes? In my mind, it is still personal use since we are not getting paid for these creations ....... we are just sharing.

Interesting point, and I do see where you are coming from. I do not officially know the answer...but I've been under the impression that one is not supposed to share someone else's free stuff, without their permission.

The way the shared gallery is set up you will need a (free) vioivo account, and then you will be able to log into the shared gallery and upload your items. You will then be able to download anyone's items, but only delete or edit your own.

If you sent me an email and haven't head from me - please let me know. I seem to be having a lot of senior blonde moments lately. :)

You only need to send four (4) items in order to join the challenge, but are welcome to upload more than the minimum to the shared gallery. So please join the fun and don't forget to post previews here too! :)

I want to thank you all for your patience waiting for the gallery to be set up. I had org. told the folks at Vivoio that I was going to start this challenge after the 15th. Didn't realize that setting up the shared gallery system was going to require a minor software rewrite on their part!

Did you flatten before saving as a jpeg quality 9 or 10? That should go a long way to reducing the file size.

Thanks, Jane. I can't say 100% (I am blonde), but I always flatten before saving. I did re-save them and had to lower the quality a bit. I never would have thought of that without your suggestion.
Everything that's been uploaded looks wonderful! Great job, ladies!!! :)

I don't seem to be able to download the images. Those that I have tried to save are saved very small and when I try to resize them, the quality is extremely poor. Can you give a few more pointers on downloading. I couldn't really "open" an image either. I'm sure it's something so very simple, but I honestly can't figure it out. There are so many great contributions and I don't want to miss out on them.

Double click on an image to open it in its own window. When that preview opens you will see some options below the image to view in other sizes. Select "origional". This will bring up another page with the image on it. Right click and do a save as.

A couple of people have reported that they can't download anything but their own submissions. I have sent an email off to tech support to see if they can fix this glitch. I didn't realize it was doing that during my test runs, because I have "admin powers" and everything was downloading fine for me. :p

Btw - the page you right click on doesn't look like it is a full-size paper, but it does actually download at 12x12. Oh and once you have right clicked and done the "save as" don't close the page! Just hit back space a couple of times to go back for more. Otherwise you will be like me, having to log in over and over again.... I am such a blonde! :D

elementarymydear

Becky, I got the same window you did. I clicked on "large", when it brought up the next page I right clicked and chose "save picture as" and it saved OK. You only have to click on "large" once, when you go back to another item it will automatically be on large. You do have to type in the name for the item, otherwise they will all be named "large".

September 14th, 2007, 08:29 PM
I did save one of the items at "large" and it was fine - the others had the "original" option - that worked, too.

It seems to be working well for me. I can download things made by both myself and others.

I just wanted to say - Thanks - all the time and effort you've put into this project is certainly appreciated. It was/is a very cool idea to provide us with so many beautiful items to work with this fall. (and probably winter - with those blues and gold and red papers.)

I think alot of our problems are more about learning the ins and outs of how Viovio works. For alot of us, this is our first experience in uploading and downloading photos. Another learning curve - just like Elements.

Again, thanks.

I was going to ask for someone to test the download now - but since you were able to download everything I guess the fix worked. You should be able to click on "origional" and get the full size file. Yeah for Tech Support!

So y'all can get busy up AND downloading now! :D

Some really beautiful stuff in there!

- Gail you are going to have to convince some more of the men to give this a try. Your swirls are so cool. And would you please share how you made the glitter paper?

- APPhotos you treepaper is just so neat looking, I keep going back to look at it again and again.

- kroberts your fall frame is really beautiful

- bayhli your embellishments are so nice, and your paper is great!

- BeckyA your beige swirl paper has such an elegant feel to it.

- SarahM all of your submissions are amazing! It is impossible to even come close to choosing a favorite.

- Janice your "BG paper 6" (forest one) is very creative, and I really like the pumpkin too!

- Su your apple tag is so perfect for this kit!

- Kathy your "rust tag" is beautiful, and I love your word art submission.

- JudyW - your leaf paper is very nice, good job!

I just love looking through the gallery! :) Might have to come up with a few more things. Hope no one minds if I snag a few background papers that I think would make nice ribbons. :D

Thanks again so much for organizing this Jane - I'm in awe of what is posted!

I too want to improve - which scrapper's site has the best tutorials?

What's hilarious is that the only time I ever scrapbook is for my granddaughter who visits each year for the month of August. We record her trip in page after page! Very amateur compared to what I see on the forum but she goes home with a very nice keepsake. I started off printing pictures and clip art that she would cut and paste onto pages, when she was younger. She's ten this year so I sat with her in elements and she did the basics herself and designed her own pages - it was wonderful. Boy kids catch on fast to this, don't they? (I've purchased and downloaded some kits to have on hand just for this sort of thing.)

I have two other grandchildren here, coming up and beginning to scrap with me as well. I'm a little more experienced with them at least.

Hopefully as I participate and learn more I'll get into it more myself...

Thanks again everybody.... what a treasure chest of goodies we have!

Hi Scrappers,

Jane asked me to make some tag custom shapes. You can download the set HERE (http://www.modempool.com/dday/dianas_webpage_000002.htm) (the first set on the list). You are free to use them any way you wish. They are made in Photoshop by combining and subtracting other custom shapes. Have fun!

Not a problem at all. I just noticed this message last night on the upload page. Dunno why I never noticed it before.

You can upload single files, or you can upload archived files (.zip's, .tar's, etc. NOTE: .sitx on Mac OS X generally does not work) Archived uploads will automatically be decompressed, and a gallery will created for every gallery in it. If you have nested folders, the hierarchy will be maintained for you with nested galleries

I would have seen that sooner I might have had everyone upload a folder of their work, instead of individual pieces. On the other hand seeing them all spread out is fun too. :) Either way its all good and you added some great stuff to the group kit!

There are some great tutorials on scrapping both written and video in the subscriber section here.

www.scrappersguide.com has a weekly newsletter with mini tutorials and the premier membership over there includes a monthly in depth video/written tutorial as well as a full kit. Cost is $3 a month. When the forum first started linda had a week-by-week technique video that she was giving away. Those are available to anyone for $1 each now, but are included with premier membership.

www.digitaldesignden.com has some great tutorials too.

Hello

I was thinking about joining the fun but I have some questions.

Can I do four of one item such as 4 pieces of Background, or four elements?

Do brushes count? If so can they be black?

Many thanks,

AngelicKim
September 15th, 2007, 07:13 PM
Shell, please do play along. Yes you can make just 4 papers or 4 embellishments. As for brushes, no they don't count. You could stamp your brush on a transparent background and then save it as a .png, that way it would be an embellishment we could use like a brush.

Oh, and black is one of the colors on the color swatch.

Jane i love the ribbons you made but had to seperate them to 3 layers to use independently. How did you twist the ribbon or do you know a tutorial on it i would love to do what you did.

Just realized I hadn't answered your question...

I have a commercial-use template that I purchased for those. Sometimes when I like an idea I buy the commercial use item and then try to figure out how they did it so I can make my own. (couldn't find a tutorial) I buy the commerical-use, just in case I can't figure it out and I want to use them. That way I don't have to worry about breaking in copyrights if I share my end results. Normally for a kit like this I wouldn't add anything that I didn't create sans template - but the kit just looked like it needed a few ribbons. :)

You can cut the ribbons apart and save them individually if it makes it easier for you. I like to see them all on a page so I can choose.

Hi, Kathy!

For the swirls I did stripes on a square, making sure they were horizontal or vertical, then used the twirl filter and saved as a pattern. I love those swirls, too and think they would be great on a more masculine page.

On the plaid, (I think) I used the wind filter four times, turning the image 90° after each time to get all sides. Look at post 4 here for another way I did it with a different outcome:
http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28481

Since I can't even find them, maybe she pulled them? And as far as the formats go, I think the original is the only one in the original format and the other sizes are just images generated by Viovio. If you want the PNG, you have to choose original. My alphas are on there that way, too.

Reka, I can see why you were excited over the frame. It is beautiful. Can't wait to download it. I am sure the whistle will be great too.

Some of the alpha were png and some jpg but none of them had the option for the original file. They were the last thing on the last page when I found them.

I've gotten as far as uploading stuff to the site.
But here's a question???? One of my papers that has stripes on it, well the stripes do not show up even when I click it. They are there, I promise. And I am not seeing much detail on the other papers i did either.
Anxious to DL

Michelle, I have downloaded 2 of your papers and see the lines. For some reason your files are duplicated as well.

Shell's alpha is working fine for me. I've been able to open the "org" and they have all been png files. Haven't gotten them all downloaded yet....

Michelle - when I click on org. for your stripped paper I can see the stripes without any problem. They are pretty fine so they tend to just blend in in smaller resolution. You might want to delete the duplicate page, so as not to confuse those of us who are blonde. :D (Becuase I for one, am plenty confused enough already!)

What am I doing wrong? I have refreshed the site, I have logged out and logged back in, I have closed my browser and restarted it. I still don't get an Original link for shellb's alpha's and half of them are still showing as .jpg. That I can deal with.

I don't see Reka's whistle or frame. Now your telling me Michelle has alpha's too, well I don't see them either. How many other things am I missing out on?

I was thinking - maybe we should come up with a name for the kit we are creating together. The we can refer to it as something like "Autumn Glow Mega Kit by the PET Design Team" when crediting the items on other sites. ("Design Team" Makes us sound like pretty important designers doesn't it. - LOL!)

Would that work for everyone, or would you rather have individual credit given when your creations appear in someone elses layout?

If a single name for the entirety of the kit works for you - please share any name suggestions you might have.

I was just reading what you guys were writing. I went to my alphas and had the same problem?? I could not get the original to come up either? I've never done this before so I could have done it completely wrong? I checked all my others and they worked fine. The only difference was the alphas were a zip. Maybe that is why the "Original" isn't there. Any suggestions?

Ok, so I just went back and went over it with my husband (software eng. so he knows much better than me) and found that if I keep each individual in the medium size it will save as a png. (Which is what they were saved as) but as soon as I change them to a large (image) they went to JPEG. I didn’t test all of them so who knows. I guess next time I will save each letter as an individual file instead of in a compressed directory. Unless someone else can direct me in a better method? I am so sorry for the trouble. If it’s just completely not working for anyone who might want them I could always just send them the file (if that’s allowed?)

**Also, Jane I think your idea about naming the collection, is good.

AngelicKim
September 16th, 2007, 08:47 PM
Jane, I too like the idea of naming the Mega Kit.

Shell, I tried again just for the heck of it on medium and some are still jpgs. It isn't that big of a deal. .png is just easier to select. Your alphas look pretty clean around the edges so they should be just as easy to select as a jpg.

Is anyone else not seeing Reka's two new files and Michelle's Alphas or is it just me?

Odd - I'm not having a problem accessing the org. and they are all showing up as .pngs. I would definately suggest downloading everything in "org" format to get the best resolution possible.

Just for the record... this "Michelle" didn't do any alphas.

And we all know I've had a hard time keeping up since on vacation.
All my stuff has started as msbrad, I could shorten to msb if needed.

Jane, I'm good to call it whatever you wish. This was your idea and you came up with the inspiration. go for it.
Now...for credits...:D

Michelle, thanks for clearing that part up for me. Judy must have meant Shellb's and not yours.

Still, what about Reka's whistle she did at my request and the leaf frame. Are they there somewhere or it is just me that can't get them? Sorry to keep asking.

Kim ...

Reka's whistle and frame are not uploaded to the site yet. I just followed the link for the frame she gave in her last post before she "retired" for the night. :)

Jane ....

Regarding the name and credits .... it sounds good to me.

Geez, Kim, I don't even get to go to sleep at night???;):D It was nearly 11 when I left the forum, and we all know how many things there are still to do before going to bed! Now it is 7:30 am, the kids have had breakfast and it is getting downloaded. For some reason it is still going abominably slowly. I hope it will go well, otherwise it will have to wait until I get home from my blood tests.

Okay, they are up. I used the Arty plants brushes from http://www.arty.dk/ on the beige leaf frame. They are wonderful.

Edit: I took the whistle down for a minute, but it is up again now. Learned a lesson: always check transparent images with a colored background behind them. I discovered some stray pixels when I saw it on the white Viovio background and had to erase a bit.

I am a little confused as to whether or not we're allowed to use brushes that we DL from other sites:confused:
Here is an example of a card I made with some foliage brushes.

Well, I just read Jane's first post and it does say no personal use only items, but why? These will not be used commercially, or is someone planning on selling the kit? In my case, I have written to the brush maker to ask what he determines "personal use" to be. I will let you know if and when he answers.

Tami - nothing in what I read leads me to think anyone is planning on selling anything. Michelle was just kidding and other references struck me as being a joke or comment about TOU's. JMHO

Jane - I would rather have us credit the kit as a single entity so as not to have to keep track of how many different people's creations we've used on a page. Just saying "PET Mega Kit" is enough credit for my stuff.

I totally agree. This is a fun thing for "us" as far as I understand.

IMHO-this IS for personal use. Nothing in it for $$.

Any name we give it is fine with me too:)

I have now started reading the Terms of Use (TOU) of the websites that offer items for "free". It really varies from site to site and author to author. If there are a lot of "authors" providing items on the site, it will vary from author to author sometimes and they will provide their TOU with the download. Some require permission, some do not. Some say use however you like, some say credit me if you post. Similar to downloading scrapbook kits ..... they each come with a TOU.

The best thing to do I guess is READ CAREFULLY. There is a tremendous variation.

This is simply for fun - no compensation/selling invovled. (Although some of those that contributed definatley could be "professional" designers.)

If we just call it "PET Mega kit" it will be tougher to distinguish it from any other kits the PET Deisgn Team might put together in the future. :D Plus by giving it a descriptive title (doesn't have to be my example) it will help remind you whats in it.

I can create a TOU that lists all the "designers" that participated - and that gives the standard "this is for personal use only, do not share, no not recolor and claim as your own" etc.....

I think we should just stick to our own creations. Look at how amazing everything came out. If I see a brush I like I always try to re-create it and change it in ways to make it my own. (Even if I tried to they never come out the same). That way I just used the item for inspiration.:) Plus I think it gave me loads of practice. Before I never had the confidence to do something like this but now I just want to do more.

Diana, so glad you decided to join in. Love the wordart and overlay.

Reka, the whistle is great so it the blue leafy frame. I liked the one you posted yesterday better that gave you tingles.

So sorry to be a pest yesterday. As it turned out I was having troubles all day with Internet Explorer. It kept freezing up and parts of e-mails were messed up and web pages weren't working properly, more than usual anyway. I downloaded Firefox and installed it last night. Things seem to be working better now except I am going to have to unistall it and re-install. It didn't import my bookmarks like it was suppose to.

I just wanted to post and say that this challenge has really sparked my interest. Kim helped me also.........a lot. Thanks Kim:D

My son is playing football and I have some great action shots that need some assistance in the wow factor. I have gone thru most of the scrapbook tutorials and have just started my journey to making some pages that rank up there with those posted here.

I submitted 3 backgrounds and 1 font that I hope someone can use. They are very basic backgrounds, but I'm just starting and I did them this morning. Any tips and or words of wisdom would be greatly accepted.

I have the excitement and passion to create Football works of art that will make my 9 year old happy to show off his pictures............I just lack the knowledge so excuse me if I ask a redundant or stupid question. Just saying that in advance because I know I'll be asking.:o

Jen, glad you joined us. Can't wait to see your papers and font.

Reka, I got your PM. Thanks for the instructions. My bookmarks are all in Firefox now. Looks like I made all those alphas I mentioned for nothing. Jen is here and participating so she can use yours which are a million times better than mine.
