View Full Version : Fonts on the Desktop

I like keeping my fonts on my desktop vs. in PE5. But...when I call an image up that used one of those, it comes up with a notice saying the text layers aren't running and will be replaced by a substitute font.
What is the purpose of putting them on the desktop if they won't recognize the fonts when I go into PE on another day? Is there a way around this? I can't see opening the font everytime I want to work on the document, especially if I don't recall which font it was. Help!

Norma.. that is why I throw mine in the font folder. :D
I just went in and did some font cleaning. XP can really handle pretty much what you add in. :)

Thanks Kimi! All I was hearing was that it slowed down the system but it's certainly better to have them in there!

Norma, that does happen when you use fonts you temporarily have open, rather than installed. I use them that way quite a bit. If you simplify the text layer before saving, it makes that text permanent. Then, of course, you won't be able to edit the text on that layer after that. You can always retype it on a new layer if you need to edit it later.

Okay, I get it. Hmmm, not sure which way I want to go.

Hi Norma ...
Just check ... doesn't the message ask you to click if you want it to do that ?
I think that if you say No it just leaves it as it is :)

Yes that is right Wendy.
Norma...
I never understood the fear of adding your fonts in your font folder. I know the operating systems before couldn't handle it but XP can. I also never understood the concept of keeping your brushes on your desktop or in ACDsee and only loading them when you want to use them.
It seems like that makes such extra work for yourself. I love going in and digging around in my brush folder to see what I want to play with.
Ahhh, my rant for the week. :o
Note to everyone:
If you are reading this and you are one of the above people, no offense was meant. :)

Norma, you could name your text layer the name of whatever font you used as a reminder if you want to edit it later. That would help some, although you would still have to call up the font independently.
As to simplifying the layer--which makes it uneditable--what if you copied the text layer, turned off the eye to the original text layer (leaving it invisible AND editable) then simplified the copied layer? I think your image would come up fine and you would still have an easy option of editing your text layer(turn on original text layer to edit. turn off or trash copied/simplified layer).
None of which helps with getting around having to call up uninstalled fonts, I know!! :)

Hi Kimi ...
I guess the reason is that when you open Elements it has to load in all those fonts, brushesm patterns etc ... and the more it has to load in them the longer it takes Elements to open :)
... but another reason why I keep brushes etc in a separate folder is that when I upgrade the version then I donlt have to install all my brushes again. I am simply able to use them where they already are :)

Like Kimi, I drop all fonts in the "fonts" folder and haven't had any system trouble from doing so. I think I would forget I had many of them otherwise! And it's fun to be working in Publisher or Word, go for a font change and find all of these really neat fonts! Surprises me every time. (Ok, so I'm easily entertained!)
I also back-up the fonts folder to an external hard drive. I'm way too attached to my massive font collection!

Well, since I'm a fontaholic, I have downloaded so many fonts I think I may (or may not) use at some point, I don't really feel I should install that many of them in the font folder. I have my uninstalled fonts all organized by category in a folder I call "Extra Fonts" and I also use "The Font Thing" to browse them when I'm looking for something special for a project. Works for me!:D

Gosh, I opened up a can of worms with this one! It seems like there are pro and cons to both ways! Gee what am I to do! It does take longer to open PE when there is so much added to the program.
And Wendy, my notice about the font just says "Ok" that it'll change it. And sometimes it changes it, and sometimes it leaves it alone! I have no clue what's going on there. They are TT fonts.
And another thing, if you want to dump them later on, and they are in the program, I'll have to keep track so I don't delete a Windows font by mistake because that'll cause a problem right?

Norma....
just like Elements there are many ways to do the same thing. Everyone has to find what works for them. I am too lazy to go digging around for a font. I want it when I want it. Like Lorri, I am also easily entertained. I love browsing thru different fonts with my arrow key to see which one I think works the best in my LO's.

I have always heard that it slows PSE down too.
Kimi, How many fonts do you have in your font folder? I think I have over 1000!
I would love to have them all in there. It would make life so much easier. I use Font thing and I really like it but it is just one more program to open up and search in.

Truthfully Toni... I don't know how to tell how many I have.
I would think that if it slowed Elements down it would be the amount of time it takes the program to open. If it adds a few seconds, I am OK with that. I don't find that mine takes any time at all to open. :)
I could be wrong.. someone correct me?
Wendy

Yes that is correct ... as I said earlier it the time that it takes Elements to open that it effects :)

Thanks Kimi and Wendy. I know I would never use that many fonts but hey, there could be that 1 time that I could really use that special font and I didnt have it. :D
