I'm using Vista Home Premium (32bit) and have been getting this error after importing photos into PSE5 - "Adobe Photo Downloader has stopped working". It's the generic Vista error I seem to get with a bunch of other programs.
Just wondering if anyone else is getting this? It happens after Downloader imports the pictures and you click through any prompts (like delete from reader). I tried excluding Photo Downloader from DEP in Vista too but it didn't do the trick.

This happens to me as well each and every time I download photos using Elements (updated with patch 5.02). I am running Vista Ultimate 32. Any advice/comments would be appreciated!
Thanks, Doug

I just wanted to give a little self-bump to this thread, since I started getting the 'Photo Downloader Stopped Working' error again - this time after a fresh install of Vista. (for other reasons). So I think it's interesting; I thought a fresh install would get rid of the errors, but now as I start to re-install apps, the errors are creeping back! What's up Adobe??
I'll post back after an upcoming test - I might try downloading photos directly from my camera/usb instead of the SD reader to see if I get the error...

Kyuss,
You might try posting over at the adobe forums (adobe.com) - this site isn't run by adobe.

I get the same thing with versions 5 and 6.
I start to download pictures some of them start to come into the organizer then it just stops even though more are left on the camera. I was hoping version 6 would fix this, but it didn't. :(
If I use windows photo import it works fine.
Windows Vista Ultimate and Canon G6
The actual message I get is:
"Files were not obtained from device
Cannot obtain all files from this device. Please ensure that the device is connected properly, or that the batter is charged. The files that have been obtained till now will be sent to Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0."

I gave up trying to get support on this from adobe. Their board system is beyond me I suppose and I haven't been able to get them to respond via support methods.
Do any of you also have problems with watched directories?
I can download my photos off my camera with windows just fine, but it seems I can't get the "watched folders" to work as well in PSE 6.0.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents on this. Through the usual trial and error I discovered that although I got similar messages to you and no photo download in either PSE 5 or 6 - this problem only applies to RAW files, jpegs are always OK.
Also the 'conflict' only occurrs on my PC which is about 4 years old and has tons of programs on it - and won't even let me use explorer to copy the files over from the camera to a folder on the hard drive. I can download all files with no problem via PSE 6 on my relatively new and 'program clean' laptop.
I can't imagine what kind of elimination process I'd have to go through to figure out what's causing the problem on the PC.
I was going to use my card reader to download photos to my old PC before discovering that my Sandisk won't read my Sony CF card.
Man, these problems are sooooo irritating...
I, too, hope that someone can help with this.

That's not unusual and I've run into it several times helping people with problems. Usually it's a result of loading software thet comes with new cameras or other "devices" that all start fighting over who gets to the files first. It's always so tempting to load the CD that comes with a new camera but that often is a recipe for problems. About all you can do is go through the programs that load on start up and remove them until you find the one causing the problem.

I just wanted to add for those searching for answers on the problem of PE not properly importing photos - I finally discovered that it was with my Norton GoBack utility - the program that lets you return to a safepoint on your hard drive if you screw up or download a virus or something. I guess GoBack had become unstable - it almost crashed my PC - but eventually recognized that is had been corrupted and very kindly uninstalled itself(!).
Thanks goodness because now my PC is running much better and I can now import all my photos (just shot 1.2GB of RAW files with a rented lens) with no trouble. YAY!!!!!
Now this may not be your exact problem, but if you are having trouble downloading it might be as well to try turning off Spyware detectors, AntiVirus, Firewall blah - anything running 'in the background' - you never know...
