Uploading photos

Hello,
I am trying to organize all my photos...but I don't want to put them all on the computer. Is it possible to save the photos on an external hard drive, and somehow get them onto Photoshop 5.0? I know how to organize once the photos are in photoshop...but I'm curious if I can download them onto the harddrive and upload & organize from there? Or do I have to save them on the computer itself? Does anyone know what I'm trying to ask?:confused:

All my photos are on an external hard drive, I don't keep any on the computer except for a few for the screen saver.
Just put them onto the EHD and tell Elements to import them into the catalogue.
