I was using PE3 v3.0.2 running on Vista Home Premium to export an AVI movie to DVD, the movie was ok but there was no audio. I have tried, with the similar project & setting if I export to Mpg, WMV & Mov, the audio was fine. I don't have the same problem with others video editor like PowerDirector 6 & Pinnacle Studio 11. But I like PE3 so much because it is so easy to use & powerful. I am desperately looking for a solution for this. Can anyone help please.

Check out the following links and comments and see if any of that applies to your situation:

Also, if I recall, your Vista comes with a DVD Maker. If my recollection is correct, have you tried using it to produce your DVD-VIDEO? BTW, how are you capturing the footage?

Let me know if any of this helped.

Thanks ATR. I have gone through both links but the 1st one is not similar to mine. The 2nd is in fact very similar but it offers no solution.

In my case there was no captured footage. I downloaded a ripped DVD movie from the internet. It is in AVI.

I have just spent some time trying to narrow down the source of problem. To me it is very clear now it is PE3's problem. I summarized below:

1) No sound when use PE3 to either burn DVD or write to folder.
2) Tried play disc on DVD player no sound as well.
3) There is sound during preview.
5) Same AVI but export to WMV, MPG & MOV sound ok.
6) Changed the source to MPG file & export to DVD, no sound.
5) Tried the same AVI file on Windows Movie Maker, Studio11, Powerdirector 6, Ulead DVD factory 6, there is sound.

So you see ATR, it is clear the problem is on PE3 but what is the root cause?? If you want me to test anything, just yell. Appreciate your help.

Do you specifically have DV AVI? What is the file format for the associated audio?

If not, the links for that type of problem are here somewhere. I just need to dig them out.

Sorry I don't quite understand your question. The AVI file is a ripped DVD movie I have downloaded from the internet. I just want to burn it to DVD, watch & keep. Do you want to know the audio format of the AVI file? If yes how do I check?

I am assuming that you have run into a codec problem, rather than a protection issue. There is no one “AVI”. Premiere Elements is a DV AVI editor. I am hoping that the following will give you some leads into what you have to rule in or out my speculation.

What codec is my AVI?
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc11bfb

What codecs are installed on my computer?
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc47951

How can I use Windows Movie Maker to convert unusable Premiere Elements video files into useable video files?
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc247e2

If I recall, you say that you get video/audio using the Windows Movie Maker. Why not use that program to export what you have as DV AVI to Premiere Elements?

Let me know what happens.

I was full of hope after reading your post but.... I have used both VirtualDub & Windows Movie Maker to convert the AVI movie to DV AVI before I import them into Premeire Elements then export to DVD. Video preview was fine with audio. But when export to DVD I lost the audio. I used the same project & export to MOV, WMV & MPG, the audio was good. I like to think that it is a codec problem. This means there is still hope to fix.

Not sure this will help. I used virtualDub to check the audio property of of the movie file:

Sampling rate: 48000Hz
Channels: 2(stereo)
Sample precision: N/A
Compression: Fraunhfer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec
Layout: 173090 Chunks (0.02s preload)
Length: 65139024 samples (1:08:25:57)
Min/Avg/Max/total frame size: 240/376/768 (63613K)
Date rate: 127 kbps (6.00% overhead)

After using Windows Movie Maker to convert, the audio became PCM (uncompressed) but still gave the same problem.

It is obvious that problem occurs ONLY during writing DVD. If you think this is codec problem then what codec PE used differently when wiring DVD?

Before I comment on your progress, I must make sure I am clear on one point. Forget about this movie clip download for the moment. Can you use your Premiere Elements 3.0.2 (on Vista Home Premium) to create a DVD-VIDEO with anything?

Quote: "I have used both VirtualDub & Windows Media Maker to convert the AVI movie to DV AVI before I import them into Premiere Elements then export to DVD. Video preview was fine with audio. But when export to DVD I lost the audio."

Are you saying that you can now get your project to the Premiere Elements DVD Preview in the DVD Layout Dialog with both video and audio, whereas before you could not? Although we are not there yet, that would be an important and significant step forward.

Are you Rendering the DV AVI in Edit before you move onto to the DVD Mode?

Have you tried taking this DV AVI and burning it to DVD-VIDEO with Premiere Elements 3.0.2 via the Burn to Folder route rather than the Burn to Disc route? If you have not tried it, with the Burn to Folder route, you use just the saved VIDEO_TS Folder and burn it to DVD disc with the software than came with your DVD burner.

I can continue to offer suggestions. But, to speed things along, also you might want to get more opinions at:

Adobe Premiere Elements User To User Forum at Adobe
http://www.adobe.com
(You can view problems/solutions there and, if you want to post your question with all the details, you need to register, no charge).

http://www.muvipix.com
(It is a subscriber site, but with free access to Forums and certain other selected products).

I need to do more homework on the "Fraunhfer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec" compression related to Vista Home Premium, neither of which I have or have had experience with.

I will continue to watch for your progress.

Sorry ATR, I may have confused you. Ok to keep things simple..

Quote: "Can you use your Premiere Elements 3.0.2 (on Vista Home Premium) to create a DVD-VIDEO with anything?"

No, I have tried other avi files, wmv & mpg. All of them without audio when export to DVD. They were all with audio when export to other format.

Quote: "Are you saying that you can now get your project to the Premiere Elements DVD Preview in the DVD Layout Dialog with both video and audio, whereas before you could not?"

No, what I meant was I have not make any progress so far. I always managed to get preview within PE ok with audio. Even without using VirtualDub & WMM to convert to DV AVI, When I export to DVD, there is always no sound. Export to other format was perfect. The problem occurs ONLY exporting to DVD. I have tried both save to Video_TS folder then burn & direct burn with no different result.

I left the downloaded movie aside & tried other avi, mpg, wmv, mov all with no sound on DVD.

I am pretty sure there is something wrong when PE writing DVD Video. What does PE do differently when converting file to DVD?

The following is a bunch of bits and pieces that I picked out of the Premiere Elements User to User Forum at Adobe. The fact that you DO have video and audio in Premiere Elements 3.0 Preview and not on the final DVD-VIDEO puts another angle to this. And, you say this applies to whatever you drag to the Timeline and try to go the DVD-VIDEO route (Burn to Disc/Burn to Folder).

I am assuming that you have checked your Premiere Elements 3.0 System Requirements and are using Vista (32 not 64) and have the latest version of QuickTime installed. Although many reports may have a common issue (like no audio), not all solutions fit all. In browsing through what is out there in the way of the common issue, I came across at least two people who found their answer in going to the Edit Menu/Preferences/Audio Hardware/ASIO Settings, and turning off Digital Output Device which they say is above Speaker. I have Premiere Elements 2.0 and do find the route, but do not see “Digital Output Device” option in the ASIO Settings that they are referring to.

Are you just starting up with Premiere Elements 3.0? If so, I am wondering if you would quality for the free installation issue troubleshooting offered by Adobe T/S? If you do post over at the Premiere Elements User to User Forums, be sure to give them all the details. There are some great people over there.
