View Full Version : ACR & Canon .THM Files

When importing Raw files from a card reader into the Organizer the Canon .THM files are not copied. I've heard that they contain extra EXIF data that is not in the Raw file. Does anyone know if the .THM file is important?

Also does ACR get all the EXIF data from the Raw file or is there still some locked Canon stuff that it can't read?

Thanks,

Hi James

I did a quick google on .thm files. Apparently they do contain exif data that may not be accurate in the CRW file itself. Plus as you have suggested some Canon propriety information.
How inaccurate this info is, I have no idea.

Try just dragging all the files from the card reader to whatever folder you want them to go and use the file get, or the watched folder feature of the organizer.

Hope this helps.:)

Gary,

I had been coping the files to a folder and then importing but I wanted to add the copyright metadata . The only way that seemed to work was to import from the card reader directly. I didn't find a way to add the metadata after the import either. Am I missing something?

After a little more web searching it appears that newer Canon cameras which have a CR2 raw file don't have the THM anymore. So maybe if I get the new 40D that problem will be gone.
I still want to figure out the metadata on import.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner. I haven't paid much attention to the metadata so I can't say for sure how to move it around.

James,

You can edit the copyright metadata image by image in Editor, but the only way I know of to do it in bulk is by using PhotoDownloader - i.e from a card reader or a portable hard drive.

Nick,

I came to the same sad relization. I posted a wishlist thread about it.

Nick,

It turns out that you can't even edit the metadata from a single camera raw file in the editor. You can enter the information but it doesn't save in the xmp file. This is ridiculous.

James,

Curious - I must admit I don't normally bother with metadata unless I'm sending a JPG somewhere, so I'm not sure I've ever looked into the issue with RAW files.

That sounds like a bug, not a feature, to me.
