Good Morning boys and girls. It's hump day again. :)

As always this assignment is open to EVERYONE who is reading the forum.
We had so many participate last week, I need to take a moment and say Thank You!
Everyone did a wonderful job! I hope this week we get as many students.

Remember.... if you see an image that you like. Please let your fellow students know about it in the comment thread. Everyone likes a pat on the back.
Have Fun!!

There is no right or wrong way, get in there and play.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The author calls this...
"Learn how to make am image look like an old style photograph."
EDIT: Where he says, make new layer and add noise. Duplicate your top layer and add noise to that layer. I think the brush Stokes show better on a smaller image, you may want to resize for web and then work the homework.
Here is your tutorial for this week.http://www.spoono.com/photoshop/tutorials/tutorial.php?id=65
Here is the link to the comment thread for this weeks homework.
I'll probably try again with another picture - I don't think I got the brush strokes the way I want, but Kimi's suggestion to save for web did help
Okay... I'm not very happy with how this turned out, but maybe it's not totally bad after all... I may try with another photo, too. :)
In addition to the tutorial steps I also played a bit with RGB balance, because I didn't like the tint of the photo after applying the Overlay.
EDIT: Just noticed that the Angled Brush has transformed some of the background greenery into something looking like a rain of locusts, LOL. I'll definitely retry with a different photo...
Played with a lot of different photos and I don't really like most of them at all. However here are a couple and I did prefer the Sepia tone for them.
I only kinda followed the directions.
I kept the 2 bottom layers and dumped the rest. :p
It is not a bad effect if you duplicate your layer, desaturated, and change to overlay. That is all I did. I guess I'm not very creative this week. ;)
I used a photo of an old store'e warehouse. The frame is made from wood siding on our house. I wish it was as easy to make a wood frame in real life as it is to make one in Elements!!
For this weeks homework i have PSE 4 and i dont have a desaturate. When i open my photo i just click on the background layer & duplicate layer then i went to image>greyscale and also tried image>bitmap and they both turned my original background layer b&w. Is this correct?
Linda.. there are plenty of different ways to get to black and white. Any of them will work. :)
I changed the blend modes. I changed one to screen (1st) and the other to hard light (2). Otherwise it didn't look old at all!
It was fun!!!
Here is my homework. I fooled with this a long time. I do think that mine looks older. I like what it did to the bright blue sky.
I went back and worked on mine some more. There's just something about this that makes you want to keep working on it.
It is interesting what happens depending on the qualities of the photo.
Here's another car, the photo is an old eBay motors auction but i love it.
Hi,
this cottage is very much in need of restoration so I thought I'd get some pics before it either fell down or got renovated (though I would imagine it is a listed building)
I sort of followed the instructions, just used soft light instead of overlay on one of the layers and also changed opacity somewhere,
thanks for the hwk Kimi,
Lisa :)
I sort of combined this one with something similar from Photoshop Creative (which converts to B&W and uses Angled Strokes but with the Blend Mode on Dissolve and a lower opacity). Did a few other things that I probably couldn't repeat :o and as the colors got a bit washed out in the process I ran a "color pop" action that I wrote based on a Scott Kelby method in his Channels book which uses a LAB mode conversion and "L" curve adjustments on the channels - all of which you aren't supposed to be able to do in Elements but in PSE5 the action runs just fine which just goes to show how much full Photoshop stuff is hiding beneath the surface ;).
OK... here is my old! A car for Bill. :D
I ran the instructions and added Carving under Photo Effects and changed my blend mode to color burn. Then I did an antiquing action I picked up somewhere, added a background out of the artworks and effects background and found an old frame. (whew!) I sure hope the teacher appreciates all this hard work. :eek: ;)
Hi Suzanne
I went to the site and I get an error message on every tutorial. The site must be having a bad hair day. :eek: Check back later to see if they fixed their issues.
Looking forward to seeing your homework. :)
My attempt.
http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1idx4SgdVif8zrSEogWS2NeTjDiBC_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1idx4SgdVif8zrSEogWS2NeTjDiBC)
I was hoping it would turn out better. I think the quality of the original picture was not sufficient enough to get better results. I may have to try another.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT:
After reading the "comments" thread I tried again with Rusty's added version.
I ended up using Soft Light instead of Overlay, that seemed to make it a bit less harsh. After I was all done I duplicated BG layer again and applied Photo Filter > Sepia - played w/opacity and that cut down on some more harshness.
The colors are much more subtle. I think it may have turned out better.
It's a picture of an old corn grinder that I took whilst visiting a farm museum with my grandchildren a few weeks ago. I think it looks good with this effect applied, a bit like an old postcard. I followed the instructions and then slightly desaturated the original picture as a final touch.
Thanks Kimi:)
I'm not happy with this. It looks splotchy. What did I do wrong?:confused::confused: In step four, it says, "make a new layer on top of all the other layers and click filters>noise>add noise. But when I got to filters and try to add noise, it says could not because no pixels were selected. I thought I got by this error message when I first started with Elements, but here it is again. Am I supposed to add the noise to this empty layer? If so, then how?
