Kimi, I didn't care much for my efforts either.
I ended up using Soft Light instead of Overlay, that seemed to make it a bit less harsh. After I was all done I duplicated BG layer again and applied Photo Filter > Sepia - played w/opacity and that cut down on some more harshness.
I admit, I got a head start on "old picture" because I started with a shot of my children that's a bit more than 40 years old :)
Isn't it neat to remember how little ones were dressed in those days? I can't imagine why parents today put camouflage of all things on children that age. OK, that's my rant for the day :D

For this weeks homework i have PSE 4 and i dont have a desaturate. When i open my photo i just click on the background layer & duplicate layer then i went to image>greyscale and also tried image>bitmap and they both turned my original background layer b&w. Is this correct?

All the submissions look so good. I really like Echoblues submission. I don’t know if this was intentional but the little girls face looks really clear. The brush strokes come through on the rest of the photo and the effect makes it look like a really old photo. As always,Beautiful job everyone.

ShellB, thanks so much! :)
No, it wasn't intentional - in fact, the brush strokes did whatever they wanted on that photo, LOL. I'm trying the same effect (and some more tweaking) on the photo of a building, let's see what happens... :p

Okay, I have a slight problem. It says to make a new layer above the angled strokes layer (well it actually says on top of all the others) and I did that. But when I try to add noise to it, it says no pixels are selected. And I'm on that layer. So what is wrong?

I had the same problem too. This happens because the new layer is transparent. :)
What I did was just use the Paint Bucket tool to make the layer a solid colour (white), and then everything worked like a dream... ;)

It worked but it seems none of my pictures look "old" no matter what I change or what blend mode I use. They just don't look good to me!

I had the same problem.. I didn't think anything looked old?
I will get in there today and try again. Looking to just change the image, not try for the old look. I am pretty sure the directions say... make it your own. :p Hopefully that is what the teacher had in mind.

I dont know why im having this problem because i followed the directions a thousand times but when im at the end & click on overlay I get absolutely no color back in my picture. I started out duplicating my backg. layer> ive tried bitmap, greyscale & remove color> duplicate B&w>brush strokes>duplicate layer again>noise>gaus blur>overlay. Ok so whats wrong?

Linda are you changing all of your layers to overlay except the original?

Excuse my extreme ignorance but I'm missing something somewhere or having a senior moment. Step 4 says add a new layer above, then click on Filter. Add Noise etc....but how do you do that on a new layer which has zilch on it?? And if you do that to the layer you were already on what was the point of adding a new layer??

Bayla... I think I said something in the directions. I will go back and check. :o
I just duplicated my layer again and added noise. You could also make a cloud layer and add noise to that one. :)

Kim,
Sorry. I'm one of those people who ignores the small print and purple writing:o I didn't realise it was an addendum to the instructions. I'll pay more attention next time around!!

Wow - great images guys! I haven't had time to play because I took Labor Day literally and spent all weekend remodelling my kitchen. Okay - my hubby helped.:D He made all new cabinet doors and for the first time in 16 years that we have lived there they all now match! We added a cabinet here and there as needed and had 4 different door fronts but I painted them in a way that everyone (including my kids) actually thought they matched. Now they really do. Also new tile countertops (still need to grout that) and new floor but that is not down yet - just didnt' get to it yet. Also need to add some trim but he has to make it first. I also finally got the new curtains made and hung for the living room that we remodelled over 4th of July weekend. Thank goodness we are out of rooms to remodel!

Oh Nancy... good for you. Every house needs a face lift now and then.
Isn't it wonderful when you walk in the room and smile? :)

Kimi,
Thanks for your encouragement & help.
My kids thought I was mad (crazy - I think in the USA mad means angry?) 'Why are you taking pictures of old machinery Mum?' was their question. 'You never know when it might come in useful' was my reply and as soon as I saw this week's homework I knew which picture to use! The straight out of the camera image looks boring, your technique added something to the image!:)
I've just been looking over all the homeworks entries for this week. I particularly like Simone's second one. I have a whole batch of old Polaroid pictures taken about 14 years ago and they all look a bit like that now!

My first attempt was too splotchy. After reading posts here about what to do with step 4, I filled that layer with white, and used soft light instead of overlay. It's better, but far from perfect.
