Leapyear52,
Welcome to the Forum! You will find lots of great people here with boat loads of information. Could you give a few more details in what you are trying to do with the two photos into one it will be a huge help!
Welcome once again.

I have a photo of me on a tricycle and a photo of my wife on a tricycle. I want to place them side by side making one photo using PSE-5. What is the most common/easiest technique ?

Do you want to cut out each of you from your respective photos or do you want to just put the photos side by side on one page.
When we see a question - each of us leaps to our own idea of what you are asking. There are so many different ways people "combine" photos.
Maybe you can find a sample in someone's gallery and post a link to that gallery to let us know what you are trying to accomplish.
Do you want to do this:

I have a tutorial on this webpage (at the bottom of the list) giving one technique for blending photos on the same image:

First set your edit window to
window> images> cascade
so several items can be open in the edit window at the same time
_____________________
Open one photo -
if it says background
Right click on the layer in the layers palette - choose "layer from background"
(essential to unlock your photo to allow editing)
if you cannot see your layers palette -
window> layer
________________________
Open your next photo - do the same
__________________________
Open a new blank canvas
control n
Choose 300 ppi for resolution
transparent for background
and select the size you want your finished project to be
________________________________________
You now have three items open in Elements - one blank canvas and two photos
__________________________
You now move your photos onto your canvas
There are several ways to do this
I like the drag and drop method
Each item is now in it's own window - you can move these windows around just like you move any window - by grabbing it at the top and dragging it
Move the windows so you can see parts of each photo
choose your move tool
click on one of the photos - actually touch the photo with the mouse
hold down the left button and drag it onto your blank canvas
grab the second photo and drag it onto your project
If you only see one photo - your top photo has obliterated your bottom photo
A larger or same size photo on top will cover the photo on the bottom
think layers - (sheets of paper stacked on top of each other)
use your move tool to maneuver them and change their sizes
choosing the move tool and clicking on the photo gets you the bounding box - that little square with the arrows on the corners and sides -
The arrows on your bounding box are used to move the sides - the corner arrows keeps the photo proportional while making it smaller/larger
__________________________________
Move your photos around until you get them where you want them
They are now on a transparent background.
You can fill that first layer - that empty layer - with color using the paint bucket or just leave it be.
When you print something with a transparent background, the printer paper becomes your background.
