View Full Version : The moon tonight

I was able to get a quick shot of the moon tonight. I only wish when I was coming home earlier I had my camera. My daughter made the comment that the moon looked like it was going to "hit the ground" It appeared that big and close. Once home I had no clear view of the moon. Now at 10:30 it is still full, but nowhere near as close.

I don't think I'll get the Lunar eclipse in the morning since the window of opportunity is small. I'm not thrilled with this picture, but it is far better than the last one I tried. I only did a "smart fix" since it looked really, really blue, then did a crop.

Cool shot! I was thinking about the eclipse, but I doubt I will be able to drag myself out of bed in time. :)

I agree with Jane on both counts. Cool shot and I doubt I can drag myself out of bed that early for the eclipse.

Good shot, Andyd!

I saw the moonrise here in Ohio last night and the moon was huge and red -- haze, I suppose. By the time I got the camera and the remote and the tripod set up it had risen a bit more, but the shot I took was still reddish but too blurry. I just now remembered that I forgot to take it off the Image Stabilization mode which you're supposed to do when using a tripod.

I went outside when I got up this morning but couldn't find the moon. Eclipsed? :(

I think that is a great shot of the moon! I couldn't get myself out of bed though to take the eclipse. A wasted opportunity, yes!

Jo, yes it was eclipsed. I watched it emerging from the shadow while driving to work this morning. It was pretty close to the horizon, so I didn't have to open my moonroof (!) to watch it....

In my part of the world I have just watched the full lunar eclipse. It was MAGNIFICENT......... this huge glowing orange ball just suspended in the black sky. It was one of those moments when your senses are heightened and you just feel so insignificant in this wonderful spectacular universe.

Thought I'd post my picture of the moon as it was eclipsing. This was about 5:10 a.m. My kids had convinced me wake them for the event and they actually dragged themselves out of bed. My son watched for 45 minutes or so until it disappeared. My daughter went back to bed just after this shot was taken. Not much of a picture but it was impressive to see...

Wow! Those are both great shots. What zoom did you use? Did you have your camera on a tripod? I have wanted to try and shoot the moon:eek: but have been a little intimidated by information I have read, you know trying to get the correct exposure.

Thanks for all the comments! :)

Brenda,

It is not as tough as you might think. I had to wait until around 10:30 at night for the moon to get above the trees. I have a Fuji s9000. Yes I used a tripod, a must for a night shot like that. I put the camera in manual mode. Set the shutter at 250 (1/250) and the F stop at F11. Zoomed in as tight as I could on the moon and let the auto focus take care of the focus. Now I'm thinking I may have wanted to change the white balance setting-this may have made the moon less blue.

All in all fairly easy.. Thanks to Scott Kelby's book for the tips shooting the moon!

Brenda: I took a quick look on the internet last night when my kids told me they wanted to see the eclipse and used the following "prescription" for shooting the moon. ISO @ 100, Manual mode, f-stop set to 5.6, and several exposures with shutter speeds from 1/60 to 1/200. I used a Rebel xTI on a tripod with a 17-85 lens zoomed all the way out. I've actually shot the moon before without a tripod (it's an IS lens) and gotten crisper shots and I'm curious why this one was more blurry. I think I should have taken it out of IS mode. Anyway, it all comes down to a bunch of experimentation. Try it! The moon isn't going anywhere so you can take lots and lots of exposures and see what works...

You're right about taking it out of IS mode; that's something recommended whenever you tripod mount your camera.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion about the IS mode and tripod use, Chuck. I probably should have remembered that! Now, I wonder when the next lunar eclipse will be????

Julie

February sometime.. or so they were saying on the morning news.

Might not be quite as inviting in the middle of winter though.:)

Not a good photograph -- I got lazy and just hand-held the camera with IS turned on and manual focus -- but I kind of caught the reddish color of the moon rising this evening.

Same here. I got an SMS that the moon was very very low, but when I got outside it wasn't low. Shot August 27, 2007 (21:23 PM)

My photo was to warm, so that was fixed in the RAW editor. The clouds was constructed in PSE5. My photo maybe also a bit better than last time I tried. Anyhow; I notice a new crater 12 o'clock (northwards) between the center and the upper edge.
