View Full Version : September Challenge?

Hey guys and gals - time to start thinking about what we would like to do for the Sept Challenge! :) There previously was some discussion about putting together a group Mega Kit. If you all are still interested in trying that, we just need to pick a theme and a color scheme.
Viovio (http://www.viovio.com) has offered to host the webspace, and everyone that participates will have the password to upload directly. Which will mean I won't have to collect and catolog it all, and you will be able to download all or just the bits you want from the final collection.
* Oh and a little disclaimer - I have been such an enthusiastic customer, that Viovio is hiring me to do a little marketing for them starting Sept 1st. (But the the offer to host was made just as we were completing the last challenge, and is unrelated to my employment.) :)

Jane, first of all--High Five on the new job! http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/mghighfive.gif
I love the idea of a mega kit. You can count me in. Football might be popular, but everyone has different school colors. Back to school or, maybe, Halloween would be fun. Just thought I'd give a few suggestions.

Hey, Jane,
I'm not sure I'm going to be participating in the challenge but wanted to say congrats on the marketing job.

Jane, I second the high-five. Count me in too. I like the football theme idea or it could be a fall sport theme and not just football.

Congratulations Jane, what a terrific opportunity for you!
Count me in for the latest challenge, I'm in for helping to create elements for the kit.
An Autumn colour scheme might be nice or we could pick a scheme randomly online http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html
Should be lots of fun :)

count me in as I did the last one and it was my first so lets see I can improve.

As much as I love football, a fall theme might have broader appeal. And I don't think a few football embellishments wouldn't be amis with a fall theme. :)
Of course y'all want to do a tropical island theme.... I have a trip to Jamacia scheduled for next Feb that I will need a kit for. :D
Thanks for the congrats - I'm very excited and a little nervous. My goal is to introduce viovio to diggiscrappers everywhere. So if you know anyone that has a digiscrapping site that would like to do a link exchange and get their site on our soon to be completed Digital scrapping resource page.... well you know how to find me. ;)

Hi Jane,
Thanks for the link, I've been there before but didn't know they had a colour scheme picker too.
So much stuff on the web, we really are spoiled :-)

Jane, this sounds like fun and I would be interested in joining. I would also favor a fall theme. This would be a first for me but I would enjoy the challenge.

Jane - are you saying each of us would create a part of the kit? I'm afraid I've tried "creating" and find I don't have it in me. I do my best "work" when I use someone elses kit and someone else's template. LOL
I want to participate. Tell me how someone with little talent can join in.

Well background papers are probably the simplest to create - although they can get pretty elaborate. And embellishments can range from the simple to the more elaborate as well. Ribbons, tags etc...
I'm thinking we should ask that participants contribute a minimum of 4 items.

Okay, first, I must assume by the comment..."sliding on the learning curve" that at least one of you is on the "downhill" side of mastering PSE 5. Since I recently upgraded to 5 not having ever mastered 3 and since I've recently discovered digital scrapbooking, not having ever done traditional scrapbooking, I would say "climbing with ropes and training crew on the PSE 5 and digital scrapbooking learning curve"! The thought of the September Challenge intrigues me, especially since I just joined and have found tutorials on making stuff. My challenge has been learning it fast enough. Anyway, I'll go along on this ride until I figure out whether or not I can contribute.

Welcome Carol Ann!
We had a lot of newbies join our challenge in July and they did quite well. If you check out the HUGE thread from our last challenge you can see that everyone was glad to pitch in and answer any questions that came up. :)
It is all about challenging yourself to learn and experiement with new things.

The fall theme sounds great. I meant to say that seperate from the fall sports theme. Alot on my plate yesterday. We could use football embellishments like you said and some other fall sports things like soccer and volleyball.
Are the submissions for this going to be quick pages again or scrapbook page kits?

Some possible color schemes: http://www.atomiccupcake.com/colorscheme.php?submit.x=356&submit.y=31
(You can select a color scheme at atomiccupcake and then post the link back showing the colors you picked. )

For this one we are going to do a color coordinated kit - papers, embellishments etc... There are lots of good tutorials in the subscriber section on how to make those.

Jane,
The Autumn theme really works, at least for us in the Northern Hemisphere. Hopefully our friends "down under" will humor us as they move into Spring.
Now, the real reason for this message; I assume that you will provide the rules by which we must abide. I'm assuming that there are some intellectual property issues such as "copyright" questions with regards to some of the tools we may want to use. For example, can we use anything, such as actions, we got from Atomic Cupcake?
Wags374
August 28th, 2007, 12:24 PM
I would suggest double checking Atomic Cupcake's terms of use, but I believe actions that you purchased from them may be used, as long as you include a line in your Terms of Use along the lines of "special thanks to atomiccupcake.com".
You can't use non-commercial items unless you make them from scratch. If you have purchased commercial lic items you may use them to create stuff for the kit. For example, Bannerwomen's ribbon building kit, or the curly ribbons, or bead making designer kits....
Please do not violate the Terms of Use for the products you have - either ones you have purchased or that were freebies.
I'm open to any "rules", "guidelines" etc that the group would like to come up with for this challenge.

Jane, since I'm new at this I have been waiting to see what others will suggest. I don't have any suggestions about guidelines but I did go to atomiccupcake and looked at their color swatches. I've been working with this one although the colors might be too bright. I wasn't sure if everyone is to choose their own colors or if you would choose and we would all use the same pallet. I'm looking forward to learning something new.

I would like to see a kit with fall colors. I used to be a red and green sort of girl - all things Christmas - but I'm finding, fall colors are now my favorites. Besides, fall colors lend themselves to summer photos, too.
Jane, I've been practicing, I think I can provide some nice papers and maybe even a bow embellishment.
Getting excited about this new endeavor. Bring it on. :D

Sarah - The idea is for the group to select a few coordinating colors and everyone use only those colors in making items for the kit.
Jan - we haven't even started the challenge and already you are improving your storehouse of knowledge, way to go!

Glad to see so many willing to give this a try! Now we just need to come up with a color scheme.
I was looking at some of the chicken feathers my daughter collected yesterday and saw some color combos that were very pretty in shades of browns, golds and blacks.
But I'd like to hear from all of you what color combo's you would like to work with.

I would like to see classic fall colors incorporating some orange and brown and red and gold and green
I've been searching around and I can't quite grasp how to get some coordinating colors chosen, but I'll try some more.

These are my favorite fall colors, but unfortunately, they are probably too dark and boring for a kit. LOL

I don't think those are boring colors at all. In fact, the more I look at them the more I like them. :)

I think Sarah's colours are nice although the colours Janice picked are just perfect for an Autumn theme.
If we go with the Autumn theme is there another 2 colours that might look good with that lot?
I think maybe 2 more colours would be needed if lots are taking part, a little more scope maybe for designing elements and papers? :)

I agree with Jo - we would need some light colors to temper the dark ones

Hi Jane
First let me say "Congrats on the new Job"!!.....way to go!
Second, I don't think I will be joining on this one but I would like to make a suggestion.
Perhaps, you could set up a poll with the colors that are of interest (therefore avoiding duplicates) and let those that are participating vote on them.
Here are the instructions for doing so.
How do I create and vote in polls? You may notice that some threads on this forum also include a section where you can vote on an issue or question. These threads are called 'polls' and this is how to create them:
Creating a new poll
When you post a new thread, you may have the option to also create a poll.
This function allows you to ask a question and specify a number of possible responses. Other members will then be able to vote for the response they wish, and the results of the voting will be displayed in the thread.
An example poll might be:What is your favorite color?
Red
Blue
Yellow
Green
Sky-blue pink with yellow spots
To create a poll when you post a new thread, simply click the 'Yes! post a poll' checkbox at the bottom of the page, and set the number of possible responses you want to include.
When you click the submit button, you will be taken to the poll creation page, where you can specify the question and the list of responses you want to include.
You may also want to specify a time limit for the poll, so that (for example) it only stays open for voting for a week.
Voting in and viewing a poll
To vote in a poll, simply select which option you want to vote for, and click the [Vote!] button. You may view the current results for a poll before you vote by clicking the 'View Results' link. Voting in a poll is entirely optional. You may vote for any of the available options, or cast no vote at all.
Generally, once you have voted in a poll, you will not be able to change your vote later, so place your vote carefully!

Maybe one more color - how about a little touch of blue?
http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1yBbP4O8m23oaA8ZQXKgHbvRlhM30_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1yBbP4O8m23oaA8ZQXKgHbvRlhM30)
If you look at most kits, they work around just 2-3 main colors with a few accents. With 6 colors we would have a huge variety of possible combos.
And we probably need to pick a metal color too - gold, brass, copper etc...

I vote for that one, too! When do we start?
Wags374
September 3rd, 2007, 12:48 PM
Okay so we have our six colors - I'll look up the codes so we are really all on the same page. I think the only thing left is to pick a metal color.
Oh and upon futher consideration, I think I will have all inital submissions sent to me (WagsQP *at* gmail.com), and once you have sent your four items then I will give you the code to upload/download. I'll layout the guidelines/rules in the start up thread. That way I can track that people are contributing, but not have to worry about collecting everything and sending download links.
And a hint/reminder for those that are getting in some pre-challenge practice... save as psd in case you need to edit, then FLATTEN the image prior to saving it as a jpeg - helps to reduce the file size, also saving it as a 9 or 10 instead of 12 helps with file size too. For items with transparent areas remember to save as .png file - and to crop closely around the item - .png's are huge files and even the transparent (blank) areas increase file size.

What can I say - I think the colors are beautiful. LOL
I did have that exact shade of blue - but I eliminated it.
But, you're right - we need more than a few colors if we want a good variety of embellishments.
I think copper is a good metal for fall colors, but I don't have a clue how to make it. But then there is brass - and ...
Getting excited.
Wags374

I have most of the different metals layer styles, so if there is something that needs to be metal I could probably take care of it.

I'm going to recommend brass accents and in particular (so that it coordinates) lets do the "shineybrass" in the MetalSheen (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=extensionDetail&extid=1045065) style available on Adobe Exchange.
If at least 3 folks agree with that, then I will get the "offical kickoff" thread started. ;)
