Here's a perfect example (http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/564071) of a gearhead. If you're a Nikon shooter, you might be able to pick up a bargain here.
If you're a Canon shooter, wait a few months and he'll probably put all his new Canon stuff up for sale when he realizes new gear doesn't make him any better. :D

Lee,
You are sooo naughty - tempting us Nikon people with something like this...
I'd get his 50mm and his speedlight, but a new washer is on the horizon...

Just goes to show you're not a gearhead. A true gearhead would buy a piece of equipment simply because it's available.:D
Of course, you can always wash clothes in the bathtub with a washboard but when the light is low and you NEED f1.8, nothing else will do... :D:D:D

I know.... But, I can probably convince the DH to get me a new speedlight and 50mm next year. (He gets me a new piece of equipment for my photography hobby about every other year... First it was the D50, then the 18-200mm VR lens, next I'm thinking the speedlight and 50 mm lens. Maybe someday full photoshop.)

You make an offer to learn what it's truly worth. What he wants and what it's worth are totally different.:D

Holy Cow Lee! That is amazing this guy is dumb enough to want to change from Nikon to Canon with that much inventory! I added up everything and it came to $8740.!!!
How stupid can a guy get?

Changing from a Nikon to a Canon will NOT make him a better photographer!

Well, I think "stupid" might be a bit harsh. Let's just say he's suffering from NAS (Nikon Acquisition Syndrome). I don't think $8K-$10K is a lot to spend on photography gear but I think it's overkill to buy that much in 9 months.

Well, you know... there are a lot of other hobbies that can be just as expensive... For example, we bought a used pop-up camper earlier this year for $4k, then spent $700 fixing up the mini-van to be able to pull it. And then, there's the sleeping bags for 3 kids, the other camping gear you "must" have... And we only went camping twice this summer :) :) :) So, you know... Depends on what you want to spend your $$ on and if your spouse okays it...

Lee,
You are totally correct, I was too harsh on that person. I do not have that kind of money to play with, so I am not used to seeing that being done. If he has the money to burn, that is his doing.

You should see the steam come out of my ears when a student thinks my workshops can't be any good because "they're not very expensive". They think it has to be expensive to be good.
Then, there are those who show up with a $10K kit and won't take my advice because he (it's usually a he) has a more expensive camera than me so what can I teach him? :D

uhhh - perhaps not to buy a $10K kit until you have a clue what you are doing?:D

So let me get this straight. If I go out and buy the most expensive toys out there (cause at that point not knowing how to use the gear thats all it is - an expensive toy!) will make me smarter than the average bear???
Dang, and all this time I've been deceiving myself into thinking I had to learn what I was doing. :(

Actually, Gene, a lot of these folks don't buy the stuff because of a "must have need". They buy it because it's fun to simply acquire things.
It's the same in my other hobby - woodworking. There are a lot of retailers making a darned good living selling all sorts of tools, often single-use tools, to hobby woodworkers. The professionals have enough sense to realize which tools they need and which are fluff.
Would you like to buy a handy dandy thing for cleaning out the bottom of hand-cut mortises? It's Rockwell Csomething (I forget) and is beautiful with rosewood handle. I actually have two - one is crooked in a way to cut into the corners on the left side of the mortise, the other crooked to cut on the right side :)
Fortunately, this stuff costs a lot less than high-end camera equipment :)

I think this sort of stuff has been going on for years and years and years. The people who really struck it rich back in the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800's were the Seattle outfitters who sold 'em all the equipment!
A bit off topic (sorry about that), but if you're interested, this is a fairly short summary (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/special/klondike/pacific13b.html). Scroll down to the paragraph right after the sentence, "I'm going to the Klondike."

OK....my comment wasn't about the fact that $10K was spent on camera gear. Lord knows I've spent more than my share of money on things that I did not need, or were even remotely necessary. I just simply wanted them. And I'm willing to bet that most of us (if not at all at one time or another) have not spent our money wisely in this regard, either.
My intent was to comment that someone would get looked down upon because they're stuff wasn't as expensive (or flashy) as someone else's, even though the less expensive (or smaller quantity, whatever) was more than adequate for the task at hand.
He who dies with the most toys is still dead. Its what you do with those toys on the journey that makes the difference. :D
I'll get off my soap box now......I'm tired and its probably showing.
