View Full Version : Fonts (Windows) Question

I want to cut down on the laundry list of fonts I see when using a dropdown to search. Many of the fonts that "came with" the Windows installation are never used. I don't want to totally trash them; I intend to drag and drop them into an external disk file. In the unlikely event I ever want to use one, I can reinstall.

Here is my Q. All of the fonts appear to be located in "C:\WINNT\Fonts" and almost all of them are ".ttf" files but a few appear as ".FON" files. I assume these are the files I want to pull off of the PC. Right?

I also find what appears to be fonts (.ttf files) located in "C:I386" and in "C:WINNT\ServicePackFiles\I386" and even a few in "C:\443a3e3c9a96040da759ed3d30\I386" ... whew, whatever the heck that folder is :)

In these 3 folders it appears to only be a few of the font files, never the complete set. Should I just ignore these locations? Move the desired files out of C:\WINNT\Fonts and leave any other locations undisturbed?

Thanks for your advice,

Rusty

Rusty,

Have a look at this article (http://desktoppub.about.com/cs/fixfonts/ht/uninstallfontxp.htm). There are other similar ones on the web.

I don't think you should remove fonts by using Explorer - you need to remove them from the Fonts folder accessible from Control Panel.

Thank you, Nick,

I seldom think of looking on the web for such, and when I do try, usually have a devil of a time finding anything remotely connected to my Q

Your link is exactly what I need to know.
