View Full Version : Split Large AVI Files

I have some AVI files that are 10GB and larger but when I bring them into the project they come in as one large scene but they have several scenes within them. The question is can Premiere Elements do an auto scene detection then do an auto split and is there a way to save as seperate files (AVI Format) for easer scene placement in other projects. Any suggestions welcomed.

If no compatibility issues, can you capture your video from camcorder via Firewire using Premiere Elements with the Scene Detection Option on?
I suspect that you have "whole" 10 GB files (with scenes within) from another source. To take advantage of the scene detect feature of Premiere Elements (split into scenes/placement as files), the only way that I see is through the capture route mentioned at the onset of this post.
Take a look at this link from Adobe and decide if it addresses your issue.

Thanks for the post the information was helpful. Unfortunately it confirms my fear that it's not possible. I have about 30 of these files from Pinnacle and it will mean a good 3 days of re importing all of the tapes (luckily I have them). I might try one of those shareware AVI splitter tools if they work it maybe it will cut down the time. :D .....Thanks again

You can edit the clip into multiple scenes and then export from Premiere Elements into separate files.

I am not sure what triggered the surfacing of this almost 2 year old thread.
Unfortunately the link that I suggested way back then is no longer available. If I recall, my interpretation of the original question was someone wanting to apply Premiere Elements capture perks to video not captured miniDV camcorder/Fireware/Computer.
You can edit the clip into multiple scenes and then export from Premiere Elements into separate files.
To elaborate on CE's sentence quoted above, you can bring a video clip into Premiere Elements 7 or 4, in the Preview View/Media right click the clip, and select Scene Detect from the pop up. After analysis of the video by this feature, the feature MAY split the video into scenes, not by TimeCode, but by Scene Content.
I have tried this with video of various formats. The feature does work. But I have found that the feature may be quicker with some video formats and contents than others.
In the final analysis, it probably would be quicker (also give you more control) trimming the video with the In/Out points method.
After you split the clips, you could always export (save) them from the Timeline as DV AVI via File Menu/Export/Movie, using the Work Area Bar procedure to control which clip is exported to DV AVI if you have more than one clip on the Timeline at one time.
If anyone wants to continue this discussion on splitting clips, I would suggest starting a new thread for better visibility of the issue.

Just a brief add on...
Premiere Elements 7
Maybe everyone one but me knew this before, BUT when you use the Scene Detect by Content feature (right clicking video in Project View/Media, selecting and using Scene Detect from pop menu), you will see the split clips in a folder in the Project View/Media. But you will also find a thumbnail in the Organizer which is a stack of these split clips. The top clip is the first one. There is a spot on the thumbnail to click on to open the other split clips in the stack.

The same happens for the Smart Tagging.
-- It really does seem weird to me because all these scene clips show the same file name. (at least for me after the Smart Tagging of a DV-AVI clip). However the content that plays is just the one scene.
-- So I used Windows Explorer to check the folder and concluded that there is still only one file: it has not been split in to separate files for each scene.
-- FYI - When I opened that same Organizer catalog under Photoshop Elements 7, the Stack of the separate scenes did not exist. It showed only the thumbnail for the entire video file. (I don't consider this a problem-but it was confusing at first)

Thanks for your observations. I found them very helpful and interesting.
So, that these Premiere Elements 7 comments would not get lost at the bottom of an old thread, I have just setup a new thread to showcase them and provide a place for additional comments on stacking and other Premiere Elements Organizer observations.
