View Full Version : Cleaning organizer thumbnails for deleted files

After foolishly deleting some files from outside Organizer I am now left with a load of thumbnails for files that no longer exist.

I know I can delete these one by one but wondered if there is a way of removing them all in one go or is the only alternative removing everything from Organizer and adding back the images still exist.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Christian

Welcome to the forums.

I don't use the organizer that much but you can try this and see if it works.

Hold the control key down and click on the photos you want deleted. I think this will highlight just those ones. then pick delete. I hope you will be able to delete the thumbnails with no pic associated with them.

Just try a couple of photos first and see if it works.

Gary.

Hi Christian ..

... and welcome :)

Mike normally picks up questions on the Organiser but he is away at the moment ... I think that he is back late Friday and hopefully he will pick up the thread when he gets back.

Do let us know if Gary's suggestion works for you :)

Gary ...

I always feel so useless when Organiser questions come up ... best I can do is say when Mike will be back :)

All I can do is try.. I just don't use it enough, so I am never sure if I am right, and I hate leaving it for Mike every time.

Organizer should be used exclusively for managing all your photos -- try using Get Photos (Camera) and choose Files and Folders and select those folders you have altered outside of Organizer.

This will generate some missing files -- reconnect process and you will be able to sort out the missing files that way.

I have a Secret place I keep photos so Organzer can't find them...

It's the "exclusive" part that bugs me. Other than my first attempt at using it and getting photos, all I use if for now is creations and that is because they go there automatically if I don't uncheck the box.

I like the organizer for the fact that you can tag stuff and find it quickly. It is now, however user friendly when it comes to moving pictures around. Unless I'm doing it all wrong or something, it's a big pain in the butt. I use the folder view, select the picture and drag it to the folder I want, but the list of folders are so long that if it's near the end you have to hoover the photo and wait for it to make up it's mind and scroll. I've moved a few things around tonight and now for the big test..........reconnect files to make sure that everything is okay. I also wish you could just move them around simply in XP because it's so much easier and Elements would find them and reconnect them. A little more work for Elements and a lot less for me that way.

Thanks for your replies.

I think you have pretty much confirmed what I thought, which is that I will have to select all the thumnails and delete them. It's just a bit of pain as I'm not 100% sure which ones they all are.

I was hoping there would be some way of scanning your folders for it to then say these thumbnails don't have files associated with them do you want to delete the thumbnails.

I use an audio player that allows you to do this (it also has watchfolders function which picks up deleted files as well as new ones) which allows you to keep everything in sync if you use other software to move / delete files.

I'll just have to grit my teeth and get stuck in.

Cheers.

I don't quite get why those files/thumbnails didn't need to be reconnected.
I thught if you moved/deleted a file outside of organizer it lost track of whre it was and gavee the reconnect icon. maybe you didn't delelte them.

Christian,

I am in Album 2 so I am not sure if this would work for you, but it seems to me that when I try to reconnect missing files it gives me a delete option if it cannot find it. I don't remember the details of how it worked.

Pauline,

Rather than drag and drop, have you tried selecting, then going to file>move and choosing your folder? This would probably be easier for folders that are not near each other.

Thanks Karin Sue. No I had never thought of that. I will try it next time for sure. The other method stunk. Even doing the move through the organizer, you still have to do a reconnect for your files. I thought it would do it automatically, but you have to say yes to each file! I guess it's a good thing that I don't move things around often.

I am still using Album. It doesn't make me reconnect when I move within the program. I still want to upgrade though.
