View Full Version : PSE 4.0 Crashes at various points

My wife has a copy of PSElements 4.0 that came bundled with a pair of scanners. She is now starting to use it due to our new baby (first at 42 ;) so we going nuts) I know she gets crashes at various points but can organize/edit at least.

I posted originally as a reply to a very old thread so due to that and that I was told it is a different issue - I will repost here.

Thanks,
Vars

======================

The one that I most readily recall is when she tries to go to Slideshow option it crashes with:

"Adobe Photoshop Elements has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Error Code: c000005
Address: 60ebb2af"

The Addy prob is not relevant in general but it seems to be the same error code.

I know she uses it to organize her photos and to edit them. I installed it (with even a second code, not that I do any photo work like she does, but she had 2 copies cos of the scanners) on my PC. I didn't have that problem.

Her pc is an AMD3800+ single core (socket 939), 1 or 1.5? GB - I forget. MB is Asus: A8N-SLI (non-sli). An XFX 7600GT card and running XP Pro Sp2. ALSO, has the new IE on it (is that 7? I forget) - which I've heard has caused probs with some apps.

Now, the funny thing is my PC is an AMD4800X2 (939 socket), 2GB, BFG7900GTX, ASUS MB: A8N32-SLI (non-sli use) XP Pro SP2 AND the IE7 installed.

So mine is an AMD dual core (older gen compared to the new M2's) and her's is single core but still AMD.

Varsuuk,

Actually, I suspect that this problem is different than the original thread question/problem - the same error code is misleading because it is a "catch all" error code. So I will suggest some different causes.

- Is WinDVD installed on her machine?
That has been identified by multiple people on multiple forums as causing this crash right away when you attempt to start a PSE slide show. For this problem, you never see any of the screens for the slide show wizard. This appears to be a software conflict between the WinDVD software and the PSE slide show software: the only solution I have seen posted is to uninstall WinDVD.

- IE 7
Has also been identified as a conflict for some people for the PSE slide show. This seems to occur for some people and not for others. I have no specifics on what makes it happen or not happen.

I'll respond in the same post (trying to avoid overposting hehe)

She does have IE7 (as do I with no issues, but we have diff machines with diff software of course) - I've even read that IE7 may be the cause of her OTHER issue :( She cannot start Windows Moviemaker (what she uses to create videos of our son) since upgrading - it totally GPFs and exits. So it may indeed be related to IE7. We will try to downgrade (although worry about orphaned stuff still getting run) if the other things we try this weekend fail.

She doesn't have WinDVD 'per se' but does have Intervideo WinDvD creator that came with the Plextor A->D converter (to go from hi8mm to digital) - the problem is that that is the only software that works in capturing the picture. To further complicate it, I cannot find the damn serial number and I can't just buy another one or use one of the TONS of WinDVD creators I've gotten over time lol, cos it is a specially patched one for the device and required. The sn she is using now (no idea what happened to the one that came with the unit, we never saw it in the box) was gotten over the phone from Plextor and they warned me to save it cos they couldnt give another - I saved it... and LOST it :( damn - I STILL have my SNs from Win 95 through all 5 XPs I have now, but I lose THAT instead :( )

More as I try to remove other 'software' she has on that are dvd/cd/burning/playback related. Any clues you have as to what sort of aspects of these progs interfere may lead me to infer what to remove.

I am a developer myself, but I don't do graphic apps and my wife knows more about those hehe than me (of course, if ya want to talk C++ and/or socket coding, tickerplants etc...ya, I can help...)

In order to have all comments for this problem on the same thread, I am reposting here the comments that I had made in the other thread:
