View Full Version : Empty Cache

Quite a few years ago I had a simple Application called PSE4 Empty Cache on my old computer. It worked great. Now I can't find it to add to my new computer.
I seem to recall it was on a site from which I downloaded styles or something like that. He "gave" it away free to make it easier to install his downloads.

Does anyone recall this?

Or......how do I empty the caches on PSE 4?

All help appreciated.

Just out of curiosity: under what circumstances would you want to empty the caches? I've never heard of doing that before....

Chuck, this person said you had to empty the cache when installing his styles or brushes or whatever it was he was giving away. I can't remember whether you emptied before or after downloading and installing. This application did it automatically and saved a lot of mickey mousing.

I wanted to try it because since installing Frye's Styles I can't save my work in PSE4. I get a "Program Error" report. I thought maybe this would help but....Google doesn't seem to bring it up.

Any ideas?

Guess this simply removed the 6 files in the Previews>Cache (The ones in Effects Cache and Filters Cache) ... to be honest whilst you have the folders open to put the actions in Previews>Effects its really simply just to trash those files :)

Ah, thanks - now I understand. I note that Graffi says that you don't have to do that with Elements 5, so I guess I didn't encounter this recently. Glad that he has the cache cleaner for you!

chuck it really does come in handy, i get nervous when i have to do it myself. seems like i just got pse 4, so i think an upgrade will have to wait maybe if pse 6 is real enticing i might let go of the money griped in my hand.:D

Graficalicus doesn't seem to be for Mac OS X.

Judy, that's a good decision - 6 can't be too far down the road....Adobe needs some new cash flow from the Elements crowd!;)

Wendy. Yes, that sounds familiar. It was those 6 files and it is easy to go it as you show. Now I'll test to see if it made any difference. Should I delete them before or after trying to install something. I seem to remember it was after and then shut down.
Right?

Hi ...

Take a look here at Grant's site and he walks you through it step by step ... the version etc are not the same but there is very little difference :)

yep, that's all it does  - actually, when adding actions to pre-PSE5 Elements (v1-4) you only need to delete the cache files in the effects cache, since they're effects and not filters. Doing it that way also cuts down on the restart/rebuild time.

It was/is the single most overlooked step when adding actions, and as stated, a lot of folks got nervous about doing it, so I made the auto cache cleaner. Many folks love it!

a straight, direct no-frills free download is here (http://www.graficalicus.com/wp/?p=92) -

same deal for some auto-install actions here (http://www.graficalicus.com/wp/?p=96) and the (surprisingly popular) brush maker (http://www.graficalicus.com/wp/?p=156)action set

Hmmm. I am wondering if this is what happened to me. This morning I was finally playing around with some brushes and actions. I searched the forums, aren't you glad I didn't ask a question that probably has been answered over and over again, and I think I did it right. Put it in presets and then brushes or actions or shapes. When I went to close something I was working on I got an error message. Never got it before. I don't remember exactly what it said. Any ideas what's going on or what I should do? I know it's a stab in the dark because I'm not sure what the message was. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Brenda ...

Well I guess the first thing is which version of Elements are you using ??

Brushes shoould be OK they just go in Presets>Brushes (no deleting of anything needed)

but next thing is where did you get the actions, where did you put them and then what did you do next ??

Wendy :)

Wendy,
I'm using PSE4. I put the actions under presets and then actions, and there was something else besides brushes and actions I put in, can't remember now, maybe it was patterns. Yeah think it was and put them under patterns. Can't remember where I got the actions and other things from, had for a long time and just now did something with them. I know some of the brushes were yours...snowflakes I believe.
I will work on something when I get home this evening and see if I get the same message. Even after I got the message it still saved it...I think. Was getting ready for work the same time I was messing around. Addicted I'd say.;)

Hi Brenda ...

When you get home go back into Presets>Actions and remove the actions as they don't go in there.

Then just let us know what they are called and what is in the folder and we will take it from there :)

Wendy,
I don't think it was actions, pretty sure it was brushes, patterns and custom shapes. But in my patterns there's a folder that says post script patterns and when I open it there's a bunch of patterns but when I click on a certain pattern it says windows cannot open the file, windows needs to know what program created it. I just ran a test of something with 2 layers and saved it and didn't get that message. Maybe it was a one time thing.
What do you think of that folder that I can't open?

Hi Brenda ...

Those patterns are OK they do need to be in there :) ... they come with Elements ...

Try it for a few days and see if you get the error again ..
