This photo was taken on a hazy day. I like the look, but does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can make it pop a little? It was taken from the old pedestrian bridge in Chattanooga, TN.

Kimi started a thread 11/25/06 titled "You Must Try This!!"
(no, I don't have a great memory, I did print that page but did not note it to show which of the various sections that thread is in)

This is what that (technique called Contrast Mask) did to your picture:

I'm not real thrilled with what it did to the sky but could probably spend some time on that with a better quality image. I did exactly what Kimi laid out and then a very slight levels adjustment and an equally slight contrast/bright adjustment

Hi ...

I tried a Levels Adjustment on it and simply dragged in the left hand slider ... it worked quite well :)

I love your picture and Rusty and Wendy both did a great job making it "pop" out. I live about 2 hrs from Chattanooga and visit Chattanooga often.

Rusty and Wendy, many thanks to both of you for your suggestions. All I could think of to do was Enhance, Auto Levels. It helped a little but I was not satisfied with it. I suppose there's not a "whole lot" that can be done to improve such hazy conditions. I will certainly try the technique on some other photos.

Charlotte, where in Georgia do you live? My son lives in Decatur. Our primary residence is in Sarasota, FL and when we decided to relocate (old folks call it "retirement"), we elected to keep our house on Signal Mountain in Chattanooga so when the weather gets too unbearable in FL, we have an escape. Unfortunately, this trip found Chattanooga almost as unbearable as Florida!

Maybe the Local Contrast Enhancement (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/contrast-enhancement.shtml) process outlined at www.luminous-landscape.com (http://www.luminous-landscape.com) would help?

Hi there

Will if you can go a little may as well go a lot... I like contrast so I used the hiraloam sharpening...High radius, low amount for a start.
Then I used Grants tools to copy the green channel. I inserted it in the layers pallet in a blank layer at the top of the pallet then changed its blend mode to Luminosity... Then a little opacity adjustment.

I guess I should have masked the foreground for the detail in the bridge struts.

Byron and Butch, these are very interesting. I now have a lot of options and will work on each. Thank you.

I'm in Marietta, just north of Altanta. So, Chattanooga is not far at all from me. I agree, it is awfully hot and the humidity is a killer. This time of year it even gets hot in the mountains. I love to visit Chattanooga in early September. Most of the tourist are gone and its cooled down a bit.
