I just discovered that there are more things to do with a layer mask.
If you have a mask applied and SHIFT-CLICK it turns off the mask effect.
The mask and layer can be unlink or linked back; now this may need some more investigation to determine how it will be useful.
ALT-CLICK show just the layer mask (haven't tried it yet) but will definitely tinker with these ideas.
