I just had to make myself stop doing the painted effect ! I did add a few photos that I had before but this time with the painted effect that I just learned from Westiemom. It is so fun and east to do that you could just keep on doing it and saying wow each time it works out. It is just like orton, or sketching, so addictive.

That is great Tina. I tried that effect and did not get a good outcome like that. Nice job.

I found that the closer the subject the better the outcome.

It was just a simple water color filter applied in one easy step.

Tina B,
Your gallery is gorgeous. Your "flower bouquet" is beautiful. Okay...how did ya do it? If not too much trouble, can you share how you achieved that soft, pretty look to the flowers? I LOVE IT

The following instructions are from:
http://www.pcin.net/update/index.php/2006/11/01/the-orton-effect-digital-photography-tip-of-the-week/

I suggest checking out that web site as it goes more in depth and has images, but these are the basic steps needed.

Orton Effect
1. Open your image

2. Duplicate the background layer (Right click on the background layer and choose duplicate) and name that layer Sharp

3. Duplicate the Sharp layer.

4. Change the Blending mode of the Sharp Copy to screen

5. With the Sharp Copy layer selected, right click and choose Merge Down

6. Right click on the Sharp layer, choose Duplicate and name this layer Out of Focus

7. On the Filter Menu, choose Blur - Gaussian Blur
Depending on the resolution of the image you are using, the amount of blur needed will change. Use enough that the shapes are still visible, but detail is not. For this 6.1 Megapixel image, a value of 15.9 was sufficient.

8. Change the blending mode of the Out Of Focus layer to Multiply.

Once you are complete, you may find it necessary to adjust the opacity of your Out of Focus layer and/or apply a levels (or curves) adjustment layer to the Sharp layer if some tweaking is necessary. You can also adjust the amount of blur you apply to the out of focus image, as well as adjustments such as level, brightness and contrast and it is good practice to apply sharpening to your image Sharp layer.

Tina, I love the painted swimmer, and the painting of the little painted guy was... ironic?!! What a fun idea, and it turned out great.

Now... walk AWAY from the painting effect... You can do it... Have you eaten today? Turn OFF the computer... When did you sleep last? Do you have "toddlers" that are asking to borrow the car? Was there snow on the ground the last time you looked outside??? :D

I'm sure there is a 12-step program for this somewhere. (When you find one, will you let ME know? You know where I'll be... cropping, color correcting, red-eye reducing... h e l p... m e...)

Thank you, PJ:

I've got the perfect picture for this effect. I have my own flower bouquet here!

Have a good one,

This week we are working the Orton Effect. A Big Thanks to who ever posted the link here!
Here is a quick version of the directions.

Duplicate your image twice. Ctrl J
Change the top layers blend mode to screen.
Merge your screen layer down. Ctrl E
Duplicate your new image Ctrl J
On your new top layer Go to Filters, Blur, Gas Blur. Use enough that the shapes are still visible but the details are gone. Don't be afraid to blur.
Now change the blend mode on that layer to multiply.
Done!

Sela,
This is the version of the orton that I used for the flowers. I am sorry I didn't post it right away for you. I forgot that not everyone has been here for a while or didn't see the directions when posted.

PJ,
I have made myself stop for today. I am so addicted to PSE. We do need PSE 12 step program to recovery. I swear some days I don't get anything else done. Good thing I am retired and not on a schedule. Lots of fun and I could be doing worse things with my time. Right? say yes!
