What a lovely effect. I'd love to learn the painting effect. Is there a tutorial for it somewhere? It is just great!

Painted effect from Westiemom

Duplicate layer.

Run high pass filter filter>other> high pass about 3

Set the Blend mode to hard light

Combine the layers

Filter> stylize> diffuse> anisotropic
you can do this twice. You want to get a liquidy, smooth, painted look.

unsharp mask 150/.3/0

Smart Blur 3/12/ High

You can also increase the contrast if needed.

These are the directions that I followed and I think it works great.

Tina, Anita is WestieMom. Great job Hamish. I just can't seem to get any of my images I try it on to look right. I even tried the anisotropic 3 and 4 times to no avail. Instead I did the Filter>Brush Stokes>Sumi-e set to 6-5-3. I did it twice and got this.

Kim that is a lovely effect.
I think the other effect works best when there is a lot of contrast, I may be wrong but I look for photos with a lot colours. Hamish

Hamish, my other attempt is in the thread Sela started. I increased the contrast in that one to try to get a better effect. It only looks painted if I print it as an 8x10. Smaller than that and not much shows.

I had a hard time finding the right photos to work on too. I did one of a chapel that turned out looking painted. Some of the ones I did didn't look painted at all. When I printed them they looked better than on the screen. I printed 5 x 7 and they did look painted. I guess it just takes an eye for the right photo. With me it is hit and miss and luck.
Thanks for letting me know that Anita is Westiemom
Kim I like what you did too.

Hamish, your tulips are gorgeous. Kim, sometimes using this technique on a smaller file makes it look more painterly. Also increasing the contrast will also help. Again, Hamish I really like your tulips. That's a perfect photo for this technique.

The thumbnails really don't look as "painterly" as the full images.

Diana: Great job. I agree with you about the thumbnails not showing the effect that much.

Thanks. And thank you, Anita, for posting this technique. It's easy and gives a new look to an image.
