What are png files and how do I load them?

I downloaded some png files from the internet and thought they were brush files but when I use the brush preset manager I can't bring them into my brush palette. Would appreciate any help.

To make a .png to a brush, open the .png, ctrl-click on the thumbnail on the layer's pallet, then chose Edit->Define Brush.
