Transfer selected images (not catalog backup) to a CD? I'm a newbie and cannot figure this out for the life of me-it has to be something simple!
Thanks,
Justin

Welcome. Have you tried to highlight the images and copy these to the CD burning software or drag and drop the images? Both methods ought to work with little difficulty.
Good luck,
Tom

Justin,
If you are trying to do the copying with the Organizer, use the Move/Copy command with the Move box unchecked.
Go to Organizer Help and look at the topic "To copy or move items offline" for more information.

Justin, just to clarify...
Tom is talking about doing it within Windows - not inside of Elements. If you have a Mac, I have no clue :)
One very simple way is to find the file(s) in windows explorer,
highlight the file(s) and right-click,
find and click "Send To" in the drop-down,
then click your CD drive,
then let your "burner software do it's thing"
I have a puzzling question, maybe somebody will jump in with an explanation. After I click "Send To" I see a laundry-list of choices. Up near the top is "DirectCD Drive (D)" and then, a ways further down the list is "CD-RW Drive (D:)" It doesn't seem to matter which one I select.

Hi Rusty
I can't say for sure but I think the directCD is a carry over from one of the cd burning programs (roxio or nero). I think it allowed drag and drop cd burning and runs in the background. I'm not sure what it is for if you have XP because you can just drag and drop on your burner and it copy that way.

Thanks Gary,
I've got Roxio and think it's really crappy (came preloaded with the PC). I finished my "church festival pictures" project and was attempting to burn two CDs to give to the folks. The small one, 250mb, took three attempts to "make it work".
This is not an uncommon occurrence. It grinds away, copies all the files, and then tells me there was an error copying the files and the disk may no longer be usable. I toss the CD and try again with a new one.
The larger file, 605mb, sailed right thru on the first attempt. Go figure!

PS - yes, running XP

Hi Rusty & NG,
When I installed Windows Vista Business I found to my horror that there was no way to burn a CD or DVD:mad:. I guess this is Microsoft's subtle way of urging you to buy Vista Ultimate. After I stopped crying, I went out and bought Roxio. I have never had a bad burn. Rusty, can you tell us a little more about the failures to burn?
Cheers,
Bob

I burn so infrequently that I'm not even sure what program I have. Nero??
You can shut off directCD from msconfig. Not sure if this will take it out of the "send to" though.
Have you tried just dragging those problem burns onto your burner icon and burning that way?

Well, Bob,
My usual procedure is to gather all of the files, often in multiple locations, by copying them into a new (temporary) folder in My Documents. When all is assembled I check the Properties of that folder to make sure the size is OK for my 700mb CDs.
Then I right-click that folder and "send to Drive D". This file transfer always moves along very quickly; depending on how many sub-folders are involved, I always get one or more pop-ups about "thumbs" and I click "copy anyway".
If the CD drive doesn't automatically open I navigate, within windows explorer, to it and find, in the upper left corner of the screen, "Write Files to CD" (or something like that). Click that and it starts grinding away.
It goes thru a 2-step procedure: writing the files to the CD and then making the CD ready for use. For a small batch of files (200mb or so) this can take five to eight minutes. For a large batch (500mb or more), 20 to 30 minutes.
At the end, if all is well, I get the final "wizard screen" telling me something on the order of, "you have successfully copied your files to the CD", I click Finish. Otherwise, and enough times to really be annoying, I get the message about error in copying (yellow triangle w/exclamation point on top) so I throw away the CD and try again with a new one. Every single time I have attempted to reuse the CD, it bombs out again.
Gary - I have no idea what a "burner icon" is. I have tried drag-and-drop within windows explorer -- dropping my source folder onto drive-D. Produces the same resulta as outlined above: sometimes it works fine, often not.

Hi Rusty,
Back in the dark ages, two years ago, I did what you did. Then I shifted gears and streamlined the process. I have never liked My Documents in spite of the the fact that Microsoft loves it. I use Windows Explorer for everything organizational. It is why I don't use PSE Organizer.
1/ Like you I create a folder called tmp. By naming it tmp I expose my UNIX roots, but that is another story.
2/ Move all of the files to burn to tmp.
3/ Launch Roxio to create a data disk. Place a blank CD in the burner.
4/ Drag 'n Drop tmp (the whole folder) to the source area of Roxio.
5/ Hit the red burn button in the lower right to begin burning.
6/ Delete the tmp folder.
Give it a try and see what you get.
Cheers,
Bob

I used to use Windows XP to burn my cd's. It was as simple as copying my files to drive d which is my burner drive letter.
Is the problem because it's more difficult to copy files from the Organizer? I don't use the Organizer - I'm still a "documents" "pictures" person.
I now have Nero on my computer, and it's so much better than Windows - so I've started to use that.
If I'm not mistaken - Roxio and Nero are made by the same company????? - but I can't figure out which is the parent company.

Thank you, Bob,
I have printed your instructions. I know I'm going to have to burn more disk(s) soon. Yes, another "church project". :)
If I have problems and/or Qs I'll start another thread and ask.
Janice - The more I think about it, I'm not even sure if I'm using Roxio or something within XP. Even though Roxio is "on my machine", maybe that's not what I have been getting.
We'll see

Sorry for the lingo, yup doing it through the explorer interface is what I meant. I have icons/shortcuts on my desktop for my hard drives and cd/dvd drives so I just drag files onto those.
I have to wonder, if you are having a drive problem, if you get the same results when NOT using roxio.

Hi Jan & NG,
Nero and Roxio are two different companies. Nero AG owns the Nero product. They are headquartered in Karlsbad, Germany with subsidiaries in the United States and Japan.
Sonic Solutions owns Roxio and a few other brands of burning software. Two of them are Easy Media Creator 9 and DVDit Pro. They are located in Novato, CA.
I have run both Roxio and Nero and like them both. I am currently running Roxio on my HP Pavilion a1640n with Windows Vista Business.
Cheers,
Bob

Bob - Thanks for that information about Nero/Roxio - I got confused because when I was googling one, the other came up. Figured it was because they were both the same company. I tried figuring it out - but I got "lost in translation."

When I want to burn my photos to CD, I just highlight the photos and one of the options are "burn to CD."
I even get a tray icon telling me there are things waiting to be written to CD and if I click on that, the screen comes up to accomplish the task.
But, even if that icon does not appear in the tray - you can go to "my computer> and click on the drive letter that is your CD burner, and the items will be there - waiting for you to burn them.
But, all bets are off if you are trying to accomplish this through the Organizer, I don't use the Organizer.
