A friend was telling me about a technique to achieve a bas-relief effect. It involved taking two images, one positive one negative, and combining them slightly out of register. The result is an image with a 3-D look.

However, he could not remember one of the steps; was a blending mode used, opacity, ...?

If you recognize this technique, I would very much like to know the missing step!

Hi Tom, It sounds very like what used to be done in the film world with slide film and a hi contrast Kodalith negative. I've come pretty close to duplicating the effect in PSE. I use 4 but 5 should work as well. Have fun.

Not sure how it compares with what you're looking for but an easy way is to duplicate the layer, set the foreground/background colours to black and white and then Filter>Sketch>Bas-Relief. That will give you a Bas-Relief B&W. Set the blend mode of the layer to something like Luminosity and you'll get a colourized version.

You're welcome. Tony's suggestion sounds interesting too. Will have to play around with it.
