View Full Version : Tutorial for bursting through effect...

I have a picture of my son running in football uniform and have cut him out of the picture. I would like to know if there is a way to create an effect of him bursting through anything. I would like the hole with the things curling back like when you burst through something.
Thanks!

Hi Chris,
Welcome to the friendliest newsgroup (NG) on the web. I am sure you will get an answer to your post in the next few hours. Members of our community are wide awake in Europe and Australia so you will be on your way. If, by chance, you do not get a post by 12:00 noon Eastern Daylight Time tomorrow I will work up an example. My source for this effect is Barry Beckham, The Digital Photographer's Guide to Photoshop Elements 4. Take a look at page 182, if you get the book. He takes a capsule from the London Eye and turns it into a spaceship bursting through the clouds and the picture frame. I think the same technique will work for you. I have wanted to reproduce this myself, so even if you get your answer, I am going to do the exercise.
Cheers,
Bob

Hi Chris
Welcome to the forums.:)
I'm not sure of any tut on that effect..(like I know them all:rolleyes:)
Alien Skin does have a breakout/breakthrough filter in one of their filter packs (xenofex?? maybe) but it is not free.
Hope this helps.

Hello and welcome. Another person on the forum has recently brought up this same thing. Here is a post with an example and a link to a site with a tutorial.
http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showpost.php?p=250867&postcount=4
You could also so to www.panosfx.com (http://www.panosfx.com) and get a free action for a page curl you could use for this.
Hope this helps and hope to see you around the forum again. This is a great site with the friendliest most helpful people on the web.

Thanks to all of you for a quick reply. I looked at some of these examples & sites that you mentioned and will try some of these to see if I can get this effect. I really like picture of the snowboarder bursting through.I love searching topics on this forum. Recently I have finally created the Out-of-bounds or Breakout border technique through tutorial directed from this forum. I think they came out ok. It just takes time working through the steps until you finally get what the tutorial is talking about (or get a headache first not knowing what to do.). Thanks so much

Most of us use Pixentral.(www.pixentral.com (http://www.pixentral.com)) I usually use Save For Web in Elements & make my longest side 700 pixels. Then follow directions on Pixentral for uploading. Once your picture is there, copy the second url under your picture (triple clicking makes sure that you select it ALL without missing out a bracket) and then paste into your post here. This will give you a clickable thumbnail for us to view.

Thanks for doing that for me. When I was copying the link it looked like it was too long when I pasted so I cut it shorter How did you get the pictures to pop up without you clicking on each link?
AngelicKim
July 18th, 2007, 11:59 AM
No problem Chris. I did click your links. I just deleted the end bracket ] from each url. The links do look long when you copy them but that doesn't show when you paste it, just the thumbnails show. If you edit the link they won't work. If deleted that bracket hadn't worked I would have just posted back that your links didn't work.:D

AngelicKim
July 18th, 2007, 12:07 PM
When you copy the entire 2nd link under the image and paste it in your post it shows the image thumbnail. If you click that it shows a larger image that you uploaded. The first link under the image would give you a link to the image but the second one gives you the thumbnail to post.

Chris,
Once Kim had worked out what the url should have been she was able to post it in her own message. As I said in my last post, you need to highlight & copy the second url beneath your image on Pixentral, the one marked Forums. And you need to get every bit of it, even if it does seem long.(& clicking three times on the url highlights it all)
Your breakouts are fantastic!!

Hi Chris,
As predicted, you got a fair amount of feedback on your burst effect. Most of the ideas were right on target. As I said I had an effect based on Barry Beckham's example. It is not quite what you had in mind, but it is an interesting one that I have been wanting to try. This is my first attempt so it is a tad crude. In order to see the 3 pixel white frame you need to enlarge the image. I will load it on my website for anyone who is interested: www.s-i-inc.com/miata.jpg (http://www.s-i-inc.com/miata.jpg) . Call this image My Miata Really Flies.

I love what you did with that car. It is not what I was thinking about doing but now after seeing yours, my head is spinning with ideas for this technique. Please post when you have time. We need more hours in the day to work on projects like these. I think I need to subscribe to get more tips on how to use PSE 5. Also The Digital Guide to Photoshop 4 would be very helpful.

Chris, you won't regret it if you subscribe. It is well worth it. I too have an idea for Bob's photo if he can post how he did it. My father in law just sold his prize 66 Mustang Pony because he needs to replace his roof. Just about broke his heart. I took a photo of him in the car just before he turned over the keys. This would work great with the Mustang for him.

Can you imagine seeing your father-in-laws face if you could create the picture, enlarge and mat & frame it when you give it to him? It would probably be the best gift of his lifetime.....

He would absolutely love it. As soon as I saw Bob's image that photo immediately popped into my head. I looked at the photos I took and the one with him it the car I didn't get the full back end of the car but thats OK cause I have the same angle of the car without him in I can add to it. My mother in law loved the car as much if not more than he did and she has a birthday next month.

Hi Lisa,
I need more hours too! They told me I would be bored if I took early retirement. How wrong they were. Glad you liked the tut. As you can see I am a big fan of PowerPoint from which the slides were produced. I have a fair amount of experience going from any running program, to a screen shot, to an insertion into PowerPoint, to a .pdf, and finally to a .zip file. Sometime during the 1990s we chucked our overhead projector at work and did everything on PowerPoint.
Cheer,

Hi Kim,
Your work is a lot better than mine! Explosions trump clouds any day. I did the direction flip before I applied it to a layer. Once I had selected the car from the original picture, I flipped it:
Image > Rotate > Flip Horizontal
Then I did the copy to the Clipboard and the pasting as a new layer.
Cheers,

Kim, your car image is superb!
I have to hunt for a 'full' pic of one of 'our' cars I could use, although as a last resort I could take a photo of the car in the drive but it is raining so much here that that is not such a good idea right now. But when I do find the pic and have a go at this technique I will post the result,
thanks again,
Lisa :)

Bob, I understood how to do this and did it but with my father in law being in the picture it put him on the wrong side of the car (for a US car, that is,:D). I did have trouble with the blur at first then I realized, DUH, you didn't flip the layer so do the blur oppisite the tut. Then I stretch the blur out a further to look like the car was coming out of the middle of the explosion. I still haven't figured out how to get the green bushes out of the back window and still keep the glass reflections. Going to work on it again later.

Jean, nice job so far. I am not sure if I mentioned it before. On the blur layer, I made my distance longer than the 215 Bob's tut said to give it more action. Actually I think I took the distance as far as the slider would go. Play with it to get something you like.

Hi Jean & NG,
This thread has "legs." I never thought it would get this far. Jean, you have taken the explosion theme to a new symbolic level by making the vehicle a fire engine. Nice touch.
I might as well ask a question that I only hinted about in an earlier post. What is the best way to extend the front end of the explosion, or clouds? If this is an explosion right in front of the vehicle there should be the hint of a shock wave. Further out I would like to extend the fire or cloud into thin whispers or tendrils. I have seen some scrappers use pointy "cookie cutters," maybe as a mask. Maybe a gradient to feather the clouds into a dissolve. What are your ideas?
Cheers,
Bob

Bob: My daughter is a fire fighter - that is her engine!
So the photo is special to us. I need to do more work on the photo, Kim is right, the truck needs to have more blur behind it.
Your instructions are great. Jean

July 21st, 2007, 11:38 AM
Bob, I guess I missed your comment. I put the explosion extension on its own layer and then cloned from the background. I didn't use the glass shards as they didn't fit the them. I am wondering if a turbulant effect could be done by using a ripple effect or filter set to radial. I will try it out and see what it does and let you know.

Kim,
I love how this thread is going. Even though it switched it still goes with the theme of something "Bursting through". There are unlimited possibilities. With the creations all have done it shows the real artistic ability each person brings out. With Bob's, The darker background gives it an eerie & mysterious look like it came out of the Black Hole & the others submitted give it a different look with the bright orange & red colors. Both techniques are awesome. I am still working on my son's football picture. I will post it when I think it is close to what I want.

Christell, look forward to seeing what you do. We had a great thread last year for football you might find interesting. It has numerous break outs for football pics. HERE (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13490&highlight=football+pics) is the thread, I think you will like it.
Bob, the ripple action wasn't quite right. However, try Filter>Distort>Liquify. The second icon of the left is Turbulence. Play with the sliders and and see if you can come up with something you like.

Jean, my brother in law has been a firefighter all of his life and is the fire inspector in Mahwah, NJ. When it is done, could you send me a high-res image?
Kim, you would think a retired guy would have all of the time in the world but... I want to try your idea of using liquefy. I also want to tryout masking and gradients. So many projects, so little time... And then there is Harry Potter :).
Finally, back to the original post, I would like to try my hand at paper bursting with the curls. I have been meaning to tryout reflections of all types. I have a feeling that the curled paper will involve reflections.
Wendy, you have done a lot with curling fabric. Any thoughts? I would like to stick with the tools in PSE, rather than some one else's tool set, because this way I learn technique. I always reinvent the wheel :).

Christell, that is looking really great. One suggestion, on your sons foot and hand that are still inside the faded area, I would fade those to blend more with that side of the image. You have probably already thought of that though. I like the way you have the part ripping through with the pattern in b&w to show a transformation, you might lower the opacity just a little on it though, maybe. Its easy to say that without having it to work on.
Bob, I was just playing around with Corey's new video for Layer Mask Tricks. It is pretty cool and easy.

Yes they do tend to do that after a while don't they. But once in awhile there is still that THAT'S COOL! We should frame that. Hubby wanted me to send it to his Dad right away and my son can't stop showing it to his friends. He says "That car would have been mine on my 16th birthday but Grandpa needed a new roof so now I don't get it. The girls would have loved me in that car." :D So I have done the movie poster version to have printed for him with the "Back to the Past" title.

Kim: How sad that your Dad had to sell his beloved Mustang. My story is happier than that - our son bought a 67 Saab Sonnet from us in 1980. After moving it all around the U.S. with the empty body in a moving van and parts in boxes for twenty years he restored it to better than new condition; and then left for Australia. We have the Sonnet back, baby sitting until he returns. Perhaps some day your Dad will find his Mustang and get it back.

Christell, that looks great. You have done an outstanding job with the photo.

I really like that curl edge technique you used. I checked scrapgirls site & found the curled edges embellishments where you have to purchase them. Did you buy them or do they just have instructions for them & where do you find it on that site? If you do buy them how do you use them on your own picture? Christell

Kim, I see you corrected putting my picture on. When I copy & paste, the picture comes up but also the URL with it. What am I doing wrong to post it?
Also, I have been checking out everyone's galleries. They are awesome. I suppose I will have to figure out that & create my own gallery also. Christell

You're using the wrong URL - copy the bottom one under the photo - and paste that one here. The URL alone will appear in your reply until you click "submit reply" - then in the answer that is posted, you will get only the thumbnail.

Hi ...
I think what happened is that you copied the right link but the front bracket was missed off when you copied it :)
... its so easy to do that ..

Christell, as Wendy said that it what happened. I simply copied your broken link and pasted it in the URL and then deleted the brackets that were there at the end to get the photo to come up. When you copy the second link under the image you upload the easiest way to get the whole thing is to triple click on it and it will highlight the whole thing for you. It is easy to mess up and takes some time to get use to sometimes. It happens to all of us still from time to time.

I have tried clicking three times but doesn't work. I looked back and tried again. If I right click & click Select All, it all highlights. Can I copy & paste using this method? thanks

Christell, never tried that way before or heard of anyone doing it that way. Sounds like it should work, lets see. I have done what you asked and here is what happens.

Christellf - do tell us your name. I did purchase the curl edges embellishment for, I think, $3.99. I can see lots of use for those. But the instructions did not work for what I wanted to do, so I put the cloud layer over the flames layer, put the edges where I wanted them, put a drop shadow then used the eraser to get back to the flames inside the edge. Does that make sense. Jean

I think Christellf's name is Christell (leave of the f). At least that is how she (or he?) signed the end of one of the post.

Jean, I really like the last firetruck creation you created. It is awesome. I am going to check on purchasing the curl edges from that website. My name is Christell. F is my last name initial.
Pronounce it like Chris-tell. I have a twin whose name is Christine. My name came from a friend of my mother & when she had us she used Christine & Christell as twin names.

Jean, Do you create your own explosion effect from scratch or do you get a photo from somewhere else? Also the same with Bob's for the dark cloud effect... Christell

Christell: Kim gave me the website for the explosion. www.sxc.hu. I put explosion and fire into the search block and came up with several. The fire wasnt big enough, so I cloned in some more. Jean

Jean, i saved some pictures from this website. When I open it in my project it is small. When I grab corners to enlarge it for project it is not clear at all. What do I need to do to be able to use any of these pictures to be clear when enlarged. Thanks

When you found the picture you liked on that website, did you click on the photo to bring up a larger one. Have 5.0 on your screen, minimized. Then right click/copy/and bring up 5.0. Make a new file, Paste and the photo is there.
It is around 4 x 3 and 72 resolution. YOu can then enlarge the size, keeping the resolution at 72 if you dont want to print the photo. Otherwise this forum will tell you how to bring up the resolution and the size of the photo. I brought the background up to around 10 inches. Oh no, guess the flames werent that big as they just went on the end of the background. Good luck Jean

That is my problem. I saved the small picture in my folder. I will open it to bring the larger one up & try what you instructed. I also subscribed so now I can try out some of the tecniques for all the tutorials. When will there be time for all this housecleaning...hahahaha!!!

You can actually get a larger version of the photo. When you click the thumbnail for the one you want it comes up like Jean described. You can then click on that image and it will go to a much larger image to the point it general is too large for the screen. That is the one you want to save or copy.
