As a few of you know I recently had a mammogram done and received some rather bad news. There is something there, they just don't know what. I have to have a biopsy done and that won't be for a few weeks as I meet with the surgeon on the 23rd. To add insult to injury - I am a breast cancer survivor as most of you are aware and I had reconstrutive surgery done. The implant in the reconstructed site burst yesterday morning. Now I have a rather odd looking mess. It will have to be surgically removed and replaced. Some days it just doesn't pay to get up. Anyway - my husband and I are going to Naples, FL for the weekend to sort of regroup, relax and get ready to face whatever is ahead. I guess I'm really tempting fate to fly on Friday the 13th with the string of bad luck I've had in the past week. I'm sort of hoping it turns my luck around. We are just going to relax on the beach and stroll around the town and just be together.

This, of course, has hit me like a ton of bricks. I wasn't expecting anything at all. After all - they say if you make 5 years then you're home free and I'm at 7 years. Well - looks like I'm not quite there yet. There is still a lot of hope that it is nothing, but my oncologist was not very reassuring based on the report. A biopsy is the only true diagnosis so we'll just have to see. I'll get back to you all on Monday. I'm off to the sun and sand.

Nancy, I know how you must be feeling. I, too, am a breast cancer survivor. I had my first surgery in 1997. About eighteen months ago I had a recurrence and underwent a mastectomy. My thoughts are with you and your family. The good news is that you are having your mamograms and keeping on top of things. I hope that your biopsy turns out to be negative. Try to have a good weekend and keep your spirits up. Please keep us informed.

You know Nancy that you are in my thoughts and prayers. We all care very deeply for you. Your sense of humour in dealing with your cancer in the past has always been a source of inpiration to me. I hope this weekend will go some way to regenerating your batteries ready for the challenge ahead.

Nancy, try to keep a positive attitude.

My wife beat this, nine years later it returned. Following surgery she beat it again and is closing on 5 years from the last go around. She's a vibrant active woman in her early 70s.

If the biopsy is not negative, it doesn't have to be doom and gloom.

The uncertainty and waiting is the hardest part. Just remember, you are remembered in a lot of prayers including mine. Enjoy a break in Florida.

I tried to find an appropriate supportive quote for this situation. I couldn't. so, I'll just use my own words. From what I perceive from this forum, you are a strong, loving, sensitive, caring, and very talented person. These will serve you well as you pass through this dilemna. You'll do fine. Be strengthened by the love and care from your support system here on the forum and elsewhere. Patti's and my prayers are with you. God Bless.

You guys are the best in the world!!! I love this place and I love all of you for the added strength I feel from your thoughts and prayers.

We flew out Friday (the 13th) in the morning and had two very smooth flights. We had to change planes in Orlando to go on to Ft. Meyers. It was HOT and humid but I didn't mind - I was not at work and not thinking about anything. I enjoyed walking on the beach and going to 5th Ave, Tin City and a few other places. We ate at the Old Naples Pub and it was such fun. A neat little place that's a "hole in the wall" type pub with a piano player and just great atmosphere. We did a tour on the Double Sunshine of the Naples area and saw how the "rich and famous" live - disgusting! A 17,000 square foot GUEST house to go with a 25,000 square foot main house and a 5 million dollar yacht! I wonder if he needs a mistress - KIDDING! We got to see dolphins in the wild (they raced our boat and jumped for us) - and also a Manatee. That was the coolest!!! We went to Marco Island, Sanibel Island, the Everglades and just had a good time together. We also did lots of shopping at the outlet malls. Coming home though was a nightmare. Bad weather delayed our flight at Ft. Myers for 45 minutes. Then the airport was closed at Orlando because of weather and we had to circle for another 20 minutes (it was only supposed to take 20 minutes to get there and we were in the air almost 45). In Orlando our flight was delayed again by weather. When we finally boarded, they made us sit 40 minutes waiting for 13 people coming in on another flight that was delayed in Ft. Lauderdale. It was really crappy because then 10 people on our flight missed connecting flights in St. Louis. Their theory was it was cheaper to put up 10 people in St. Louis than 13 people in Orlando. We ended up getting home nearly 2 hours late. I was so tired I just collapsed and went to sleep. I'm still pretty out of it tonight so won't get much done for a couple of days. I feel very renewed and ready to face this pain in my a** - oh wait - that's not where it is.:o :D Thank you so much for the words of encouragement - they mean the world to me. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Nancy, sounds like you had a wonderful, relaxing time in Naples (and surrounding area)! I love going there, there's so much to see around there (in addition to those disgustingly huge mansions!). Bummer about the plane trip though. We have thunderstorms a lot late in the day in the summer so it can screw flights up I'm sure. But you are finally home safely.

My prayers are with you! Hope all goes well.

I have the 23rd marked on my calendar to write but now we will be away for a few days in the mountains. I will definitely be thinking of you and praying your news is good. I was at the cancer clinic today for tests and a doctors appointment. You know even though I am a breast cancer survivor and now a colon cancer survivor I feel very lucky. Some people I saw today are not as lucky. We have our families, friends and our cameras. What more can we ask for. Keep the glass half full - even tho it is hard sometimes. Funny thing - I didn't take my camera. I wanted a total relaxation vacation and I find that when I have my camera I spend way too much time looking for those shots and not really seeing and enjoying what's there. I wish I had it on several ocassions but also enjoyed the freedom of not lugging it around. I really need a smaller pocket camera. I've been putting it off but now maybe I will look into it more.

Yes - I'm trying to keep my sense of humor but my "deflated ego" sure spoiled my beach plans. I've already decided that once that is fixed the cancer can go to he** because it's not getting me this time either. I have too much to do - I don't have time to fit cancer into my life.

IT"S BENIGN!!!!!!!! I went today for the consultation and she ordered a new mammogram at their facility. They did TWELVE  additional shots. She believed they could reach it via needle and decided to proceed with it today. She said she would have an answer for me today so I didn't have to worry another day. I am SOOOOOOOOO happy!!!!!!

I still have the deflated implant to deal with (I may need one on the other side now too after 12 shots ;) :D) but that is small potatoes by comparison. I go to see that doctor on Friday and there will definitely be a surgery but it will be a day surgery taking about an hour.

Thank you all so much. I was so glad I went to the doctor at Barnes instead of taking the advice of the doctor here and just going in and doing surgery. He all but said it was a return of the cancer based on the mammogram alone and turns out it was not and a few more films (okay they were overly cautious with 12 but wanted to be sure) was able to prove that they could reach it and did not believe it was cancer but wanted to do the needle biopsy to be sure. A needle is so much better than full surgery. I am so relieved and so glad I didn't listen to him.

Nancy,

What wonderful news! I am so glad for you. "Rejoice with those who rejoice!" I think doctors often want to do more than is necessary, to "CYA" so to speak - but at the expense of what and who? I don't see how they can tell what kind of spot anything is on those mammograms.

Thank you so much everyone. I got a call from the surgeon today and they are doing the "repair" surgery this Thursday. I like fast - then I don't have to think about it for long.

Thank you everyone. I am so relieved it's over. My follow-up at the doctor said the redone reconstruction looks great and is healing and I'm feeling normal again.

DeeDee - yes it is good to be designing again. I was too sore to use the mouse much after the surgery but now I'm back at it in full force. I even managed to get a new kit done and up at the Den.

Hi Nancy,
I am so glad everything is looking up. It was bad enough with more surgery but your healing now. What a scare. I've got 3 months to catch up on.

The bruises on my shoulder are almost healed now that I got from walking into doorways.:D

Thank you all so much. I am soooo glad this is behind me (again). I told my husband there was no way I could go through this all again but the wonderful support I got here sure made me feel like I could do it again. You guys are the best!
