View Full Version : Toolbars?

I'm using a trial version of 5.0 right now and I'm not sure if it's the full package or not. One thing that really bugs me is that I can't seem to get a toolbar with the "undo" and "redo" arrows that are found on previous versions of elements. Is it just due to having the trial, or does it really not exist in elements 5.0?? It's getting tedious to have to pull down the edit menu every time I want to undo something!

Undo and Redo were removed from the toolbar in PSE5. There was much wailing and rending of garments over this. Almost everyone has adapted to using CTRL-Z to Undo, and CTRL-Y to Redo, or using the History palette -- but there are are a few who have reported being so set in their ways that they valued the toolbar access to these commands over the improvements to the program.
Only you can decide whether it is a show-stopper in your case.

Thanks for the reply....I guess I've got 27 more days to see if I can adapt!

Hi Jennzee and welcome. It really isn't too difficult to get use to. You can also use the history to undo/redo, you can customize the layers palette to show this history. I personally found the ctrl z/ctrl y easier.
If you have any questions or problems during the trial just ask. Everyone here is very friendly and helpful.

Hello Jennzee and welcome,
You might as well get used the the "finger dance" now because you'll find that PSE has TONS of keyboard shortcuts to help speed up your workflow. This forum is a great resource when you have questions and, as Kim says, we're a friendly bunch :D

Thanks for the welcome! It's been a while since I've done much in photoshop, so I'm sure you'll be getting lots of questions from me!

Jennzee, ask away. Keep in mind too that here there is no such thing as a dumb question, we've all been were you are. And again, welcome

The toolbar shortcut I miss the most is the open a new document shortcut. I've looked to see if it's there somewhere, but no luck, so I'm assuming it went the same way as the undo/redo buttons.

Pat,
You are correct that the New Document shortcut button is no longer on the Toolbar.
You probably already know, but I'll mention it anyway... CTRL-N is the keyboard shortcut for New Document.

And if you get desperate you can always get a new keyboard - mine has Undo, Redo, New and Open keys on it and they all work just like the icons did. Thought it was a good idea at first but over time I find I use them less and less and use the shortcuts instead and for Undo/Redo I like the History Palette better. And not having the toolbar does make it a lot easier to move up to Full Photoshop when you're ready :)

Hi Byron, I didn't know the shortcut actually, so thanks for that. I've never been in the habit of using keyboard shortcuts, but it's one I'm beginning to develop now!

Hi Jen & NG,
Welcome to the friendliest newsgroup (NG) on the web. As an old Windows user, I make great use of the standard Windows shortcuts. Here are the ones I use all of the time:
<ctrl> Z - Undo
<ctrl> A - Select All
<ctrl> C - Copy to clipboard
<ctrl> V - Paste to clipboard
These work well in all standard Windows programs like Word and Excel.
Cheers,
Bob
