Hi everyone,

I am looking for a good reasonably priced desktop publishing software to create a history book for our church's 50 th anniversary. I know I will be using PSE5 for a lot of the graphics and even for some pages itself but I need something that will be more in line with making a book. I have access to Publisher and an get Pageplus from Serif for free. Have any of you had experience with Pageplus. I have done many newsletters in Publisher but thought maybe I needed something with more capabilities.

PS. this has been a great journey through this year celebrating our church's 50th anniversary because of all the help I have received on this forum. With that help I have created 2 very nice bulletins for different celebrations, a bookmark, postcard that had a picture of the church painted in gold thanks to Robin, a video presentation thanks to ATR and Barb O and all you others who gave me so many suggestions and instructions in how too's.

The history book , pictorial directory, ornament for Christmas and maybe even and old fashioned fan will be the last things to do for this year.

Thanks so much for all your help.

Vesta

Thank you all so much.

Hi Vesta

I tried both quite a few years ago and found Publisher to be better. Mind you I was just messing around with them as I had no real need or project.

If I recall, the problem with the Serif product was that the free version didn't have all the bells and whistles. For free it was a good product but to get up to what publisher was like you had to buy their upgrade (pro??) version.

As I said, that was a while ago (6 years??) things may be different now.:)

MS Publisher is the better package out of the two. Depending on how large this book is going to be it might be more cost effective to have it published by one of the on-line publishers.

Thanks Gary and Mark,
This book will be printed by Lifetouch, that does church directories but I can submit my own pages and designs as long as it is in the formats that they use.

The free version of Pageplus is a full edition it is just a older one like PSE3 compared to PSE5 so they are actually giving them away. They do have some extra templates etc. that I can purchase for $9.99. this is version 9.
version ten is 29.99. Here is a link (http://desktoppub.about.com/od/findsoftware1/p/serif.htm) to desktop reviews but I think you guys are right about MS Publisher.
