Hi tdbeijaard,
Welcome to the web's friendliest newsgroup (NG). You have come to the right spot for help with all things Photoshop Elements (PSE). I think your problem is with the formation of the web page. First a few questions: How did you create the gallery entry? At some point your "artwork" needs to be converted to HTML code. In the old days one did this by hand, and some people (like me) still do. Most, however, do not. They use tools like Frontpage, Expression Web, Dreamweaver, etc. to build the page. If you hand constructed the page there would have been an HTML tag that would have looked something like this:
<body background="myBackground.gif">
The file myBackground.gif is where you background is stored. Now I assume that you did not hand code your HTML, so my question to you is: How did you create the web material that you uploaded to your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? Can you tell us where the gallery is right now? For example, my website is:
www.s-i-inc.com (http://www.s-i-inc.com)
You will notice a faint background on my site of gear wheels. My guess is that you have not told the web page generating program that you are using a background.
If none of this makes sense to you, do not feel bad. Keep asking questions and we will get to the bottom of this in short order. I think you will enjoy this NG. It is a great on line community.
Cheers,
Bob

Hi Robert,
first of all, my name is theo and I'm an resonable expert in html.
I'll explain what I've done. In elements i've made a webgalery with a template as a background. All works fine when I test it in a browser.
After that I upload it to my provider and after that the gallery work even fine but in the part of the flashplayer i'm missing the bachground of the template.
Any idee what's wrong?
cheers

Hi Theo,
I have not used that feature of PSE as I hand code my HTML. However, I should have some time tomorrow to see what kind of code PSE webgallery puts out. At some point it just must generate:
background="myBackground.gif"
If it does not it may be time to ring up Adobe. My reluctance to use the feature is I am not sure how PSE generated web pages will "play nicely" with my hand crafted material. I have gotten used to CSS "garbage" in the pages I maintain with Word. Most of my site is pristine HTML.

Bob

Hi Theo & NG,
I successfully got a web gallery to load on my web site. Here it is:
www.s-i-inc.com/My=20Gallery (http://www.s-i-inc.com/My=20Gallery)
The =20 nonsense was do to my stupidly placing a blank in the gallery name which should have been MyGallery with no blank.
I could not find an option for using my own background. I did see one for a: "Slide show with fixed-size background." But, alas it only gave me a choice of their backgrounds. How did you get to choose one of your own?
After learning how to do it with PSE, it is back to plain old HTML for me. Compare the look and feel of my own gallery with the generated one.
www.s-i-inc.com (http://www.s-i-inc.com)
From the home page above use the navigation button labeled: Photography.

Bob

Hi Robbert,
yours looks good.
Can you have a look at my test at www.beijaard.com/elements/index.html.
The upsite part looks good but in the innerpart there should be a background called 11HandMadePaper.jpg and what I'm seeing is a blank filling.
Hope you understand.

Hi Theo,
First let me say that your art work is outstanding. I only wish I was more facile with northern European languages (in spite of my last name) so I could read your words. You are Dutch, no?
On your "My Paintings" page I noticed that you use a style sheet: stijl.css. This is where the background= tag must be located and it, of course, is working. From what I could see of the gallery (both your gallery and mine), it was made to be used with the Flash Player. Now my gallery uses an xml file called: 02theblues.xml. Since my gallery is one of the standard ones and my background is indeed blue we need to probe this file. Your xml file is: 11handmadepaper.xml which is very encouraging since it seems to know about your desire to use something called "hand made paper."
Because I used a standard color, #072b75 blue, the xml file has some very simple tags for my background: <metadataViewBgColor alpha="100" color="072b75" /> Your code may be more complex because you are using a pattern which may reference a file: 11HandMadePaper.jpg. So, here are a few things for you to try:
1/ Search your computer for a file called: 11handmadepaper.xml On my Vista system it was located in:
C:\Users\Robert Schuldenfrei\Documents\My Gallery\resources\styles
Of course, it will not be in "My Gallery" since that was the name I gave my gallery.
2/ If you find the xml file send it directly to me as an attachment at:
bob@s-i-inc.com. Do this before taking the next step because we are going to make a change.
3/ Create a new gallery using the default setting for Type, the first one and the second setting for Style, the blue one. When you get done your gallery should look like my gallery. That is the thumbnails on the left and the image that has focus on the right.
I think we may get to the answers, but the work that you have done on the page: "Alle olieverf schilderijen" is far better than anything the PSE wizard can do!

Bob

Hi NG,
I got a personal e.mail message last night from Theo. He is using a UNIX system that is case sensitive. This caused the gallery wizard not to recognize his background. I asked him to post his final message here and hopefully he will. By investigating the xml file where the gallery wizard stores its data, I learned a lot about how PSE makes things "web ready."
Cheers,
Bob

When you making a webgalery there is a bug in generating the file group.xml On two places in this file there is a call to the background file if you have choosen a .jpg as a background. The files are written with one or more capitals and the calling is done in lower case.
When you post your webgalery on a Unix server the file doesn't been recognised and the background stays blank.
Solution: Change the letter(s) in the file group.xml as written in the directory where the background jpg's are stored.

Theo,
I haven't really been following all the technical stuff on this thread, but just wanted to say that your work is amazing. I've just been browsing and I love all your images....they are so restful to look at!

Thanks Bayla,
I'm more busy with painting then photography, although the last is very intresting too. Now a day I always use my 12 years old Nikon F80 but I'm going to buy the Nikon D200 body. I can use my lenses on this body, only the costs stops me for a while.

Hi Theo,
Thank you for the information. There are probably not too many UNIX users out there. I would suggest opening up a dialog with Adobe. This should be an easy bug to fix in the next release. You might offer to do UNIX beta testing for them.
Keep posting your oil paintings here. I know our community will enjoy seeing them.
Cheers,
Bob
