View Full Version : My first market experience
Shari

Well - I did it. Actually sold some cards. I did sell about 30 cards and make some money for my supplies. The nicest thing was, since this market is full of very talented artists, I received a lot of compliments on my work. Since I have only been behind the camera lens for two years I was thrilled. Next time I might try enlarging and framing a few and see how that goes. The best thing is I love doing what I do. I have come home with a camera filled with more images. I probably do better financially selling to friends but the whole experience was lots of fun.

Shari: Well done. I know someone here who has done much the same thing and her cards are much in demand. I asked her what camera she used and it was a Fuji 9000 identical to the one I used to have before I "upgraded" to a DSLR. The lesson for me was that it's the photographer not the equipment that makes all the difference because my pictures of the same local scenes with the same camera weren't anything like as good :)

How nice to be out and about...
It is wonderful when someone we don't know says nice things about our work. I am proud of you for taking this step. I have all of these images just sitting on my computer doing nothing. Way to go!! :D

Wow - thanks everyone - I just got one e-mail reply and came to the thread and now I see all these wonderful posts. Some of my photos are in my gallery but I have over 100 images bwolford. I just keep taking photos and playing with them. Actually my friend the jeweller let me share her table. It was she that talked me into trying. I figured the way I am feeling these days that it was good to get my mind on making some stock and off the chemo side affects. My, Dad, who is 88 and lives on the Island came down and brought us lunch. He was pretty proud of me for taking this on. I overheard him telling his friends!!! That was special too. Could not do this as a constant weekly thing as some people do but I have been invited back on the 22nd and not having to pay for a table makes it all profit. I help my friend out with photography of her jewellery so she likes to offer the table space. Thanks again for all your positive comments.

PS Storm - I was on Bowen Island. Unfortunately because the forecast was for rain there were not as many boaters as usual but Sunday was a beautiful day and I did enjoy the whole experience.

You gallery has some wonderful images and many of them are card/post card worthy. I think you have an opportunity to set up a small display in local card shops, souvenir stands, etc to sell some of your images.
You'd be surprised how the independent vendors would be willing to carry your merchandise for a small %age...

Ohh thanks so much Brice. Actually a couple of store owners have approached me to put my cards in their stores. I just feel when they do their 100% mark-up it makes the cards too expensive - $6.00 each. I may rethink things when I finish my chemo in December and have had my next surgery in January. In otherwords, when I am back to normal. I do want this to continue being a hobby - even though now I have been paid for some work!! I want it to be FUN. I don't want it to be stressful. I do a couple of cards a day and have done a couple from yesterday's venture already - but at my speed. You have really boosted my confidence and I thank you for that.

Shari,
Congratulations on your new venture!:) That's an exciting step! And I like what you said about doing the cards in your own time and when you feel like it, that will keep it fun and not make it seem like a chore.
I love this (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/gallery/view_img.php?id=22472) new image I just saw in the gallery. Just gorgeous!:) Should be printed large, framed, and hung someplace where those looking at it will see the beauty of nature. Your talent is amazing!
