Well most of the time we are busy making people look younger.........removing wrinkles, colouring hair etc. This week on the Friday challenge at www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com (http://www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com) to challenge was to age someone. Steve, being the good sport he is supplied his own photo for us to age. What a lot of fun. If you are interested in seeing some of the other entries check out his forum and go to the Friday challenge for this week. My entry is far from perfect but it was a lot of fun to do.

Thanks Linda. He just published his fourth edition (for cs3) I haven't seen it yet though. I've enjoyed the one I have which is the third edition.

Dorrie.......no way. No where close to doing something like that! It was interesting to do though and I wonder how close it will look to Steve as he ages. I'm awaiting Friday to see the comments I get. :)

Yes Wendy his book is good. I took the aging process a few steps further than what he had in the book. I did a bit of research and basically tried to remember what the elderly people I visit with my dog look like. It's amazing how many people miss the eye brows. With men they tend to get bushier.....nose hair, nose in ears (some times). Thinning lips, age spots, drooping eyes. None of these are covered in the book but are of course a sign of aging. :(

There are differences between men and woman too.

Hi Pauline ...

I can't remember which issue of the book I have ... it may be No 2 ??

Certainly worth getting and lots of great things in it ... I did wonder abot getting another but not too sure if its just going to be repetitious ??

Oh Pauline, how depressing, it is like looking in the mirror! (not the hairy version though, just the other saggy bits).

Linda Steve's a good sport. He gets used in plenty of challenges. As a matter of fact people at the forum ask him to put more pictures of himself on the cd for the new book as they didn't have very many pictures to work with!!

Wendy like every update I'm sure there is some repetition. There will also be new stuff but of course it's going to be for cs3. I'd still like to take a look if I happen to see it in the store.

The fun thing about his books is that he uses challenge entries as other examples of what he is explaining so you get to see what others have come up with. It was something I loved when I got his book and now if I got it again, I would actually be familiar with the people whose entries he used.

Pauline, I had to go try it, too. Mine's not as good as yours, or as most of the others, but it sure was fun to do. Pauline, do you think it is okay to post my attempt here, or should I not, since the challenge was from another website? I really don't know the proper ettiquette . . . ?

Good stuff Pauline.............I'm not sending you a photo of me............I'm grey and wrinkly enough thank you! LOL

Go for it Linda. I'd love to see it. It doesn't matter that it was from Steve's site. Did you post it there too? Everyone is welcome and it can be a lot of fun. On Friday Steve gives his critique of the work and it's a great way to learn.

Robyn, starting to feel a little old myself! When I got my glasses last year I was trying different ones on and one pair when I looked in the mirror I saw my Mother's face!! Boy I put those ones back right away!

Norma it was fun to do. It would be harder on someone younger. With someone who is middle aged at least you have some signs of wrinkles to follow to give you guide lines. It's also recommended that you get a picture of a parent of the person to help see what the features would change like.

That one made me laugh. Your right, we always want to look younger, we never want to look older. The only time in our lives we want to look older is when we are a teen and don't know a thing. LOL

Thanks, Pauline. I'm at work, but will try to post my aging attempt of Steve after I get home today. Like I said . . . it was a fun exercise.

Don't I know it uniqcrafts!! Have 3 teens myself. Two are girls!! My eldest is 18 and made a comment that her hips are getting wider.....she can't fit into size 3 anymore!! BOO HOO>>>>>>>>> I told her wait until she had kids!!!

Linda I look forward to seeing your results. The whole point of these exercises is to learn AND to have fun. It's surprising how much we really don't see or notice! It makes you stop and take notice and think about things. It's like my x brother in law who had a port wine birthmark across the entire one side of his face. The first time I met him it stood out and I really noticed it. After a while, I didn't even notice it any more.

Hi Pauline

This was fun... I have no idea how you did it..... I was going to make mine the same size as yours but it looked do dumb and fake...I decided to make it small so you can't tell how bad it compares...:p

If you get a chance tell us how you went about doing it.

David that turned out great!! How I did it.........well........flip flopped around and worked on the major areas first. Selected the ear and put it on it's own layer. Free transform and pull it to make it bigger. Did the same for the nose. Ears and noses on men continue to grow as they age.
Selected the area under the eyes and put them on their own layer. Again Ctrl + T to transform and drag the start of the bags down.

Used the clone tool to clone in more forehead-------as men age their hair recedes.

Selected the eyes and put them on their own layer.........filter liquify. Played around with the eyebrows and eye lids to make them droop.

Selected the cheeks and did the same. All the wrinkles were done on their own layer. Created a new layer filled with 50% grey in overlay mode and named it dark. Used black and soft brush for dark part of wrinkles.

Added another 50% grey layer and put in overlay mode and named it light. Again using the same process and white I made the light colour on either side of the wrinkles to make them stand out.
Age spots again were added to their own layer.

Hair was desaturated and dulled and then using a brush painted on the greys.

These are the basic steps for what I did. When zoomed in I followed the natural wrinkles that were already on the face and emphasized them adding more where I thought they would be.

This whole thing isn't a quick process and probably if I knew more about bone, muscle and face structure I would do a better job.........but that would be a whole new learning curve and I'm working on enough right now!

Oh and I forgot, I added some painting to try and make his eyes look a bit watery which seems to happen to a lot of elderly, and decreased the saturation in his eyes. Thinned his lips.......on and on.................I'm sure there is more I'm forgetting!

Thanks of the tutorial Pauline...I'm going to play some with your ideas...BUT

Ears and noses on men continue to grow as they age.

The only place us men continue to grow is around the middle...:D:D

Okay Butch I'll leave you alone with your thoughts. :D If you did a little research though I think you'd be surprised. Maybe you should get some old photos and check out your ears and nose. Oh.........I forgot, you might not see it in this version but I gave him some nose hairs!! :D I stopped short of the ear hairs though and sorry I see I screwed up your name earlier......another problem with aging. :(

Here's my attempt. I didn't age him as far as some did. He's only "a little" older. Note the smashed fingernail -- teehee

Great job Linda and I love the way you did your receding hair line (I never thought of that) --- see how wonderful it is to work on the same image. We can all get ideas from each other. It's another reason I like the Friday challenge. There are so many ways to approach it and we all see things differently.

Hi Linda

Good job!!!... the hair looks great..... BUT... first Pauline says that as a guy my nose is getting longer... are you saying we men get clumsy too…!!!! I’d have more to say but typing with my smashed finger is killing me.

Butch

Pauline
June 20th, 2007, 05:06 PM
Butch your nose doesn't just get longer it gets wider.
Clumsy........must be an old age thing too since my husband can't seem to walk out of the bedroom at 5:30 a.m. without banging into the bottom of the *$&%&^ bed! He hasn't gotten that much wider so it shouldn't be a problem.

June 20th, 2007, 05:37 PM
Butch, yeah, the nose gets wider when you get older. It gets longer when you tell tall tales! :D

Oh my gosh, that nose thing is so funny I can't stop laughing. But it is true! :D

You all have done a great job with the aging, but I'm not going to try it! At my age it's much to scarry to think about all those wrinkles getting worse on my face.

At least since I'm not a man I don't have to worry about my nose growing like Butch does.

Linda: I love the smashed fingernail.

Linda good one!!

Sharon I don't think our noses or ears continue to grow, but what happens is we start to get a moustache and eyebrows quit growing.

Pauline -- oh, yeah! You got that one right! I think I'd RATHER have my ears and nose keep growing :D
