I used hues/saturation layers and colorized the following picture of my dad taken 50 years ago. I guess the fotball is too dark.

Oh that is just suberb .. you really have done a great job on it. Its just the right balance of colours.

That's a wonderful job. For the football, you might want to try this. (I'm away from home and don't have PSE to try and provide a screenshot if it works):
Open a blank layer at the top of your layer stack. Make your foreground color brown; it'll probably take a dark brown because the football is so dark. On your blank layer, paint over the football with that brown. Zoom in and use the eraser to remove brown paint from anything other than the football. Change the blend mode of that layer to color.
If this doesn't work, no harm done because it's all on a separate layer that you can simply delete.

If you go into the Subscriber Area>Tutorials you will see one called Colourising a Photograph that will help you ... it shows how to colourise each individual part of the image ..
