I would like to change the colour of the mask to black, as I am putting the photo onto a black background. Is this possible. The edge was black before I inverted colors (Ctrl-I) as per instructions. Somewhere, cant remember where, I saw an Edge Mask done in chrome - it looked great. How is that done? I have been through the Hue/Saturation adjustment, but cant find black. Many thanks Jean

Hi Jean,

Is your image flattened, or are there layers to it? Or maybe if you posted the instructions you followed, it would help someone figure out how to modify them for a black background.

Diana: Thanks for reply. Linda sent me the directions via pm, and I have been playing all evening. Like those edges, especially as I can now change the colours. This forum and the helpful folks here are the best. Jean

Jean,

Would you mind sharing the directions on this thread? I too have wondered how to change the colors.

Thanks,

Julia

Julia: I am going to defer to Linda. I am still working on this, and not getting it right every time. But when it works, it is a lovely effect, especially the chrome edging.
Linda: Will you put the tutorial on the forum, please.

Thanks to Jean for PMing me, and alerting me to this thread. Sorry I didn't see it earlier. As I told Jean, I don't think I'm really using those edges the way they were meant, but here's what I did to get a colored edging (and Jean wanted to know about a wood grain one, so the instructions also mention that)

1. Put the black-and-white edge template onto a layer of its own, above the photo layer, and adjust it to fit the photo.
2. Use the magic wand to select the white area of the edge template.
3. Go to select>inverse, to select all except the white.
4. Do control J to copy the "unwhite" part to its own layer.
5. Delete the original edge template, with both the black and white (and now your edge should be visible).
6. Now you can use a hue/saturation adjustment layer, with "colorize" checked to play with the color you want it to be. You may need to adjust the saturation and lightness in that dialogue box, as well as the hue.
7. Or, if you want to do a wood grain, stay on the edge layer, and go to layer styles>patterns>oak. Again you can use a hue/saturation adjustment layer to change the wood color, if you want to.
8. Finally I added a bevel to the edge.

Good luck with it. Hope it works well.

Linda & Jean,

Thanks so much. I appreciate your information. This is just one more great thing I've learned from the forum. It'll be nice to try this on my pictures.

Thank you both!
