Hi, Sherry! I live in Oceanside, CA & the bird you asked about in your new gallery pic is a male oriole. Entire families of orioles feed out of our hummingbird feeders. They're nectar drinking birds and never go near our seed feeders. The males leave the area earlier than the females and our males have been gone about a week. The males are beautiful birds! I know, TMI, but you asked.

I caught a lucky shot of a hummingbird and oriole feeding almost at the same time--it's in my gallery (BCory).

Are the males still in your area or is this an older pic?

Hi Betty,
We thought it was an Oriole, but when I tried to find a pic on the web, none had a yellow head like that. I just took that a week ago- he was sitting in the Lemon tree. I have a hummer feeder up but haven't seen them go near it. (I have a seed feeder in the lemon tree). I do have one hummer who trys to keep everyone else away though.
Betty, you have great pics of all the birds---I remember when the galleries first went up & your pic with the "bubbles". I'll have to keep practi ing on getting good hummer shots like yours!!!
:D :D :D
Thank you for the info too!!!

I am so envious of your "hummers"! I am still coaxing them with 2 feeders in our yard here in Las Vegas. One little very plain brown humming bird comes around but that is nothing compared to the 20 - 30 we used to have on the California coast. I will keep trying!

Mary,
I just started making my own food--& it seems they really prefer it to the bought kind. After I made the change I now have lots of hummers, whereas before there wern't so many.
I just did google to get recipe, my friend in Riverside--told me about it & she has tons of hummers.
They even come to the patio when I have the cats out on their leashes--the cats don't even pay any attention to them.
